Schändlich genug, dass Apple keine zentrale Datei/Programmzuweisungsmöglichkeit in OS X hineingebastelt hat, insofern ist RCDefaultApp absolutes Pflichtprogramm (mehr dazu hier im fscklog). Version 1.2 bringt einige willkommene Neuigkeiten: "Added ability to add custom extensions, MIME types, and OS types; typing letters will now jump to the nearest matching entry in the list; added RSS selection (i.e. feed:// protocol) to the Internet pane."

Update: Zur Abwechslung mal ein neues eMac Gerücht: So soll dieser laut macnews.net.tc erstmals mit 15" TFT (1024*768) ausgestattet und damit quasi ein 'kleiner iMac' sein. G5 (1,6 GHz) soll er ebenfalls mitbringen, aber erst mit/nach Vorstellung eines PowerBook G5 auf den Markt geworfen werden.

Soviel Apple war nie in Geschäftskreisen. Langsam wird es öde, das zu dokumentieren. Aber zwei haben wir noch: Die Wirtschaftswoche - das Blatt, mit dem gerade DCT Rebellen ohne Markt-Don Alphonso einen Strauß ausficht - hat seiner aktuellen Printausgabe ein wunderschönes iPod-Titelblatt  verpasst und in einer 14seitigen "Jede Menge schöne Produkte"-Beilage diesen natürlich auch zum Kauf empfohlen. Und weil wir bei Empfehlungen sind: das Wall Street Journal rät seinen Lesern den Umstieg auf den schädlingsfreien und damit produktiveren Mac. Kauft, KAUFT! (jpf)

Die Sicherheitsfirma NetSec informiert, dass das Security Update 2004-12-02
einen Bug beim HFS+-Dateisystem nur teilweise beseitigt. Der Fix funktioniert nur beim Standard-Server Apache, nicht aber wenn dieser modifiziert oder ein anderer Webserver benutzt worden ist. "'They’ve slapped a band-aid on the problem,' commented NetSec’s Tom Parker. Fixing the problem once and for all would require complex changes to the OS X kernel, he said, which might explain why the patch had turned out to be partial." Einen Exploit gibt es nach Angaben von NetSec bislang allerdings noch nicht. (jpf)

Engadget liefert das ausführliche How-To zum iPod Firmware-Hack (Voraussetzung ist allerdings eine Windows-Kiste): "Also, this most certainly voids your warranty, so if something happens, you’re screwed. But hey, you’ll have your own branded iPod, that’s hot and well worth it, right?[...] We’re not sure if Apple is going to freak out about this, it’s just like changing icons in Mac OS X, so it shouldn’t be a problem." Engadget kann es nicht lassen, mehr gossip zu einem Apple + Motorola Mobiltelefon: "The phone had Motorola components, but most certainly had Apple brandings on it. He said that he did not have a chance to handle the phone, but that his direct supervisor did. The phone was “sleek and sexy” in her words. He mentioned that there was talk amongst the people who had seen it that iTunes and iPhoto would factor into this device somehow. They also said that the phone had a slot on the top (media slot?) as well as what looked to be a USB 2.0 port on the bottom."
