Camino 1.0 [Update]

Es war der wohl brauchbarste Browser für das junge OS X, einst unter 'Chimera' firmierend. Als sich der damalige Oberentwickler Dave Hyatt zu Apple aufmachte, um Safari anzuleiern, darbte Camino lange Zeit vor sich hin, bis schließlich Mike Pinkerton das Ruder kräftiger übernahm und das Open Source-Projekt vorantrieb. «Today is the day that we take that step from obscure open source project to real, non-alpha, non-beta, feel-safe-to-tell-your-mom-about-it project», freut sich selbiger heute seinem Blog über das Erreichen der 1.0. Der Browser steht final als Universal Binary zum Download bereit (Release Notes) und wiegt 14,2MB. Auch wenn ihm der Platzhirsch-Faktor von Safari abgeht und die Erweiterbarkeit von Firefox fehlt, so gehört Camino (im Verbund mit CamiTools und CamiScript) spätestens seit heute auf jeden Mac.
Update: Om Malik führte ein kurzes Interview mit Mike Pinkerton: «OM: What can the users expect in the near future? MP: We really hope to have RSS discovery, spell checking, improvements to the download manager, and much more for 1.1.»
