Einer hätte ruhig für mich sein können! Letztendlich sind die PowerMacs sowieso zu schön, um einfach aufeinandergequetscht in einen Schrank gestellt zu werden, es ist ohne Zweifel allerhöchste Zeit für einen G5 Xserve.

macnn hat die Textfassung eines Interviews mit Steve Jobs durch einen französischen Fernsehsender. Darin findet sich zwar überhaupt nichts neues, aber durchaus amüsantes:

Bei looprumors wird bereits seit zwei Tagen über einen neuen Superbowl Ad im Januar 2004 spekuliert, allerdings kann ich mich noch an ein ähnliches Gerüchtebrimborium im letzten Jahr erinnern und Apple hat schlussendlich beim Superbowl überhaupt keinen Spot geschaltet...

Mac OS X 'much more secure than Windows XP' und zwar nicht aufgrund der verhältnismäßig geringen Verbreitung, sondern:
"* Windows comes with five of its ports open; Mac OS X comes with all of them shut and locked. (Ports are back-door channels to the Internet: one for instant-messaging, one for Windows XP’s remote-control feature, and so on.) These ports are precisely what permitted viruses like Blaster to infiltrate millions of PC’s. Microsoft says that it won’t have an opportunity to close these ports until the next version of Windows, which is a couple of years away.
* When a program tries to install itself in Mac OS X or Linux, a dialog box interrupts your work and asks you permission for that installation -- in fact, requires your account password. Windows XP goes ahead and installs it, potentially without your awareness.
* Administrator accounts in Windows (and therefore viruses that exploit it) have access to all areas of the operating system. In Mac OS X, even an administrator can’t touch the files that drive the operating system itself. A Mac OS X virus (if there were such a thing) could theoretically wipe out all of your files, but wouldn’t be able to access anyone else’s stuff -- and couldn’t touch the operating system itself.
* No Macintosh e-mail program automatically runs scripts that come attached to incoming messages, as Microsoft Outlook does."

macrumors spekuliert, dass die iBooks als nächstes an der Upgrade-Reihe sind:
"Apple is "readying updates" to their consumer notebook and will bring the iBook up to par with the rest of their line with USB 2.0 and Airport Extreme support."

Derweil sind die neuen 15" PowerBooks an Platz 1 der Apple Store 'Top Sellers' Liste.

Diese nutzen übrigens auch die bereits bei den G5 PowerMacs zum Einsatz kommende 'Slewing' Technik, um die Prozessorleistung an die situationsabhängigen Anforderungen automatisch anzupassen. Details bei macfixit.

Ebenso bei macfixit der wichtige Hinweis, dass mit einer regelmäßigen Rechtereparatur so einiges an Ungemach unter X umgangen werden kann (auch wo man es nicht erwarten würde).

macnightowl versucht die andauernden (wenn auch langsam leiser werdenden) Diskussionen um OS 9 zum Abschluss zu bringen:

Was besseres habe ich schon lange nicht mehr in Netz gesehen:
Bei Lab360 hat man die Möglichkeit den Ton aus diversen Filmen nebenbei anzuhören. Bei mir läuft gerade Donnie Darko (Trailer bei Apple), es gibt unter anderem 'The Big Lebowski', 'Fight Club', 'Eyes Wide Shut', '12 Monkeys', 'Pulp Fiction', 'Reservoir Dogs', 'π', 'Royal Tenenbaums', etcetcetc... Unbedingt besuchen und anhören!

PowerBook G5 (!)

"He made it clear, however, that the current crop of G5 processors are designed for desktop machines, and a cooler-running version of the processor would be needed for a PowerBook. But he did point to the fact that a few years ago, nobody thought it would be possible to get a G4 processor in a PowerBook."

Staatliche Cinema Displays

Apple Insider spekuliert über neue Cinema Displays im November:
"New displays have been rumored since the introduction of the Power Mac G5. According to sources, the revised LCDs will be even brighter than the current line, sport a USB 2.0 hub and prove to be more versatile for graphic designers."

In der Baltimore Sun findet sich ein sehr ausführlicher Artikel von David Zeiler, der darauf pocht, dass MacOS X vermehrt von staatlichen Stellen eingesetzt werden sollte:
"Adding at least some Macs to the mix of government computers makes sense if for no other reason than to limit the incapacitation and damage from a cyber attack by using more than one operating system," Zeiler writes. "Given OS X's resistance to attack and high level of interoperability with Windows networks, Macs would be ideal for such a role."
