Another job listing for Senior Embedded Software Engineer was looking for an engineer "to design and build embedded consumer multimedia applications" with skills with ARM development. Auch Wired ist dahinter gekommen:

Derweil: "Apple may benefit from expected increase in IT spending". Der Virginia-Tech-Supercomputer geht in Betrieb. "Thanks to new technology, Macintosh gets in on the action" über den Mac als Spieleplattform berichtet der Boston Globe. Update: Die Universität Tokio will wohl auch umsteigen, es soll um 1150 Geräte handeln. Mehr Details werden sicher noch veröffentlicht

Macfixit gibt weiter unvermindert Troubleshooting Tipps und auch Apple hat speziell ein Knowledge Base Dokument online gestellt, welches bei den vielberichteten Ethernetproblemen helfen soll.

Laut Apple Insider soll X.3 schon diese Woche 'final candidate' Status erreichen, damit würde nach wie vor der 24.10. als möglicher Starttermin vorhanden sein.

Billiger Supercomputer

Erheblich gute Presse wieder für Apple.
In der Washington Post findet sich interessantes zum 'Virginia-Super-Cluster':
"Virginia Tech, he said, is building one of the world's cheapest and most powerful supercomputers. Assistant professor Srinidhi Varadarajan cobbled together 1,100 Apple G5 desktop computers with proprietary software, building a grid computer system that will comfortably rank among the world's top 10 fastest supercomputers. All this is expected to cost $5 million, 90 percent less than the next model up on the supercomputer hierarchy."

Und folgendes findet sich bei IT-Director.com:
"I'm not sure if I'm witnessing a trend, but quite a few people I know have recently made the move from Windows PCs to Apple PCs. I intend to do the same the next time I change kit, but I'm slightly different in that I've never owned an Apple. All the people I'm talking about here have been Apple users, and are now moving back as a consequence of simply noting that Apple seems to be a revitalised company, OS X looks very impressive and the office apps on Apple are no longer a problem.
This trend, if it is one, is not yet visible in Apple revenues, but I've decided to keep track of them to see. Apple continues to innovate."

Ein sehr anschaulicher Bericht über TiPaint, den Lackierstift für jegliches Titan-PowerBook, findet sich bei den macguardians:
"Ein begabter Malermeister bin ich nicht, die teilweise wenig überzeugenden Ergebnisse lassen sich bestimmt zu einem Teil daran festmachen. Dennoch bleibt die Leistung hinter dem zurück, was man für 20 Euro erwarten darf."

Apple Insider spekuliert über eine Flüssigkühlung (!) bei den zukünftigen G5 PowerBooks:
"One of the major obstacles facing PowerBook engineers is the intense heat emitted by the PowerPC G5 processor. (While a single processor Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) draws 338 watts, a single processor Power Mac G5 requires 450 watts.) To help combat the problem, sources say the company is experimenting with liquid cooling systems in early prototypes of the portables."

Außerdem besurfen laut OneStat.com zu 97,34% Windows-Nutzer das Netz. Der Mac hat dahingegen nur abgeschlagene 1,49% zu bieten. Da sich diese Aufstellung allerdings nur auf Web-Seiten bezieht, die OneStat-Dienstleistungen in Anspruch nehmen, sollte man daraus keine allzu allgemeinen Schlüsse ziehen.

Apple zieht X.2.8 zurück

Apple hat offensichtlich das Update auf X.2.8 zurückgezogen, welches nun weder per Software Update noch als Standalone Installer erhältlich ist. Im Laufe des Tages hatten bereits etliche Nutzer über erhebliche Probleme geklagt. Ich konnte bei (und nach) meiner Installation glücklicherweise überhaupt kein Problem feststellen (allerdings habe ich z.B. den Ethernet Anschluss auch noch nicht benutzt seitdem) und werde sicher noch mindestens mal sicherheitshalber meine Rechte reparieren. Bei mactechnews findet sich eine praktische Sammlung der häufigsten Probleme und ihre entsprechenden Lösungsmöglichkeiten.
Statement von Apple dazu (zu finden bei maccentral):
"We have temporarily removed the Mac OS X v10.2.8 software update while we resolve an issue affecting Ethernet networking on small number of Power Mac G4 desktop systems. We anticipate that the issue will be resolved soon."

Apple zum fehlenden L3 Cache der PBs

Laut Think Secret nahm Apple folgendermaßen gegenüber Verkäufern Stellung:
"When performing day-to-day tasks, such as reading email, browing the Web, and typing Word documents, an L3 cache does not provide significantly improved performance over the already fast PowerPC G4," the company told sales reps, pointing to the acceleration provided by the Velocity Engine."The removal of the 1MB L3 cache may cause concern among members of the video editing community because video encoding to MPEG-2 made use of our L3 cache. Some members of this community have come to look for L3 cache in products that they purchase," Apple acknowledged.
"However, the faster processor and doubled L2 cache will compensate for the slower L3 cache. This should make the overall experience faster."
