10.2.8 (wieder) ab demnächst

Update:
Es wird schon fast jeder gemerkt haben, 10.2.8 ist wieder verfügbar und das in ziemlich zahrlreichen Varianten. Für all jene, die bereits X.2.8 installiert hatten, gibt es per SoftwareUpdate einen ca. 580KB großen Patch (Installation hat bei mir zumindest wunderbar funktioniert), ansonsten gibt es den 40MB Standalone Installer (für die 10.2.6 Nutzer), den wahrscheinlich wie immer empfehlenswerteren 97MB Combo Installer (ab 10.2) und ganz neu für die glücklichen G5 Besitzer ebenfalls eine eigene Variante.
Mit dem Update sollte auf jeden Fall auch die Akku-Restlaufzeitproblematik aus der Welt geschafft sein (nachzulesen unter anderem auch im macuser.de Forum)!

Think Secret berichtet, dass es einen neuen 10.2.8 build gibt, allerdings: "The version posted to Apple Developer Connection was an update for installations of 10.2.6; it's unclear how Apple plans to update existing installations of 10.2.8 build 6R65." Auch bei mir hat sich inzwischen das merkwürdige Akkurestanzeigechaos eingestellt, weshalb nur zu hoffen bleibt, das Apple sich auch etwas schlaues für die bereits in 10.2.8 hängenden Anwender ausgedacht hat. Bei macfixit gibt es noch zwei interessante Aussagen zur Akku-Problematik: Zum einen scheint man bei Apple das Desaster erkannt zu haben (was zu hoffen bleibt) und zum anderen wird empfohlen, den Akku neu zu kalibrieren: "Apple Knowledge Base article #86284 explains "The Lithium Ion battery of an iBook or PowerBook computer has an internal microprocessor that provides an estimate of the amount of energy in the battery during charging and discharging. The battery needs to be re-calibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate. You should perform this procedure when you first use your computer and then every few months thereafter." Das werde ich jetzt direkt mal ausprobieren...

Die große 'Gold-Master' Diskussion scheint ausgebrochen. Ist Panther nun zum Greifen nah, oder doch noch nicht? Mehr dazu bei macrumors (alle Informationen wie gewohnt bestens zusammengefasst) und The Register, die allerdings auch nicht gerade über eigene Quellen dazu verfügen.

Bei Daring Fireball nimmt John Gruber in gewohnt außerordentlich lesenswerter Weise Dells Versuch in den klar iPod-dominierten Music-Player-Markt vorzustoßen: "Apple missed this, and marketed the Macintosh to individuals and small groups (and schools). The Wintel PC industry, in the large, took the opposite route, and marketed toward large corporations. Apple succeeded in terms of making the Mac successful in the markets they targeted; they failed in terms of seeing how big the corporate market really was. Dell, as much as any PC maker, exemplified this corporate focus. The Dell brand stands for computers that are just like the other guys’, except a little cheaper. This brand message was and is hugely popular with corporate bean counters. But this doesn’t do Dell a bit of good in the consumer electronics market. Corporations buy computers for their employees, but they don’t buy MP3 players. The iPod’s brand — and Apple’s — is strongest with individuals. Which is exactly the sort of brand that’s needed to sell portable music players."

Steve Jobs schafft es bei silicon.com auf Platz 1 Agenda Setters 2003 Liste und das nicht ohne Grund: "Our panel was impressed by his decision to turn to the open source community to develop the core of the company's next generation operating system, OS X, and a dedication to produce quality hardware such as the iPod music player," reports Silicon.com. "However, it was the recent launch of the successful iTunes Music Store that many considered a key achievement, with one panellist claiming Jobs had "lit a fire" under the industry and proved that online music works." John Scully (Ex-Apple-CEO) über verpasste Chancen im Interview mit CNET.com: "We weren't insightful enough to recognize that what we had inside of Hypercard, essentially, was everything that later was developed so successfully by Tim Berners-Lee with HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). We didn't call it that. But essentially, we had all that hypertext, radio buttons and linking capability architected in the original Hypercard. In hindsight, I wish Apple had recognized that we had a huge opportunity to go take our user interface culture, and our know-how, and applied it to the Internet. Interessante Bemerkungen zum neuen 15" PowerBook finden sich schon seit einigen Tagen auch bei ~stevenf: "The new hinge design is also both a blessing and a curse. Overall, I think it's a better design, and no doubt it's much more durable. But I quickly discovered that it doesn't tilt back nearly as far. I never realized how far back I tilt my laptop screen when it's actually in my lap, until I discovered I couldn't do it with this one."

Von Stuffit Expander 8 kann man derweil wohl nur abraten.

Außerdem wird MS wegen mangelnder Sicherheit verklagt: "Microsoft's eclipsing dominance in desktop software has created a global security risk," the lawsuit says. "As a result of Microsoft's concerted effort to strengthen and expand its monopolies by tightly integrating applications with its operating system ... the world's computer networks are now susceptible to massive, cascading failure."

Auf jeden Fall gänzlich lesenswert!

In der Business Week (die in letzter Zeit wirklich eine unglaublich Apple-geneigte Berichterstattung an den Tag legen) sieht man ein 'Fenster der Gelegenheit' in dem der Mac wieder in den IT-Unternehmen Fuss fassen könnte: "I believe the Unix workstation users who are buying Macs are small in number and not enough to boost Apple sales on their own. But they're key players -- the same type of people who snuck PCs into the corporate environment under the cover of darkness while their overseers remained wedded to mainframes and other bigger computers. These are the folks who'll soon be making a lot of the buying decisions in IT departments. So they are the future, and they promise a bright one for Apple."

Optimale Vorbereitung auf System Updates

Es gibt einige allgemeine Vorgehensweisen, die man anwenden sollte, bevor ein System Update unter OS X durchgeführt wird. Dies verhindert vielleicht nicht unbedingt große Fehlfunktionen, die bei vielen z.B. mit dem 10.2.8 Update aufgetreten waren, aber unter Umständen werden kleinere Unzulänglichkeiten verhindert.

1. Vor dem Update: Startlaufwerk überprüfen und wenn nötig reparieren. Etweder per Disk Utility oder per fsck (Anleitung in der macup, allerdings vorsicht: Bei deutscher Tastatur muss man fsck ßz eingeben! Sowie in der Knowledge Base) 2. Ebenso vor dem Update: Unbedingt Rechte reparieren (auf dem Startlaufwerk), dies lässt sich auch einfach per Disk Utility bewerkstelligen (unter dem Reiter 'Erste Hilfe'). 3. Update installieren 4. Nochmals Rechte reparieren + Neustart!

So ärgerlich es auch ist, überhaupt diese ganzen Schritte bei einem Update vornehmen zu müssen, der nur einige Minuten dauernde Aufwand belohnt unter Umständen mit erheblich gesparter Frustration. Und in all seiner Banalität garantiert natürlich ein frisches Backup immer die größtmögliche Sorgenfreiheit. Nachlesen lässt sich all dies im Detail auch bei macfixit, die täglich die aktuellen Problemfelder des MacOS abhandeln (eine sehr ausführliche Liste zu den Problemfelder von X.2.8 und deren Lösungsmöglichkeiten finden sich in diesem macfixit Artikel)

Adobe und Apple geradewegs verheiratet

In einem CNEt Interview mit Adobes CEO Bruce Chizen über die firmeneigene PDF-Strategie plaudert dieser auch fröhlich über die Beziehung zu Apple:
"There's been some back-and-forth between you and Apple Computer recently--what's the state of that relationship?
Our relationship with Apple is a great one. My relationship with Steve Jobs continues to be extremely strong--we communicate on a regular basis. Where we compete, we've agreed to compete. Where we partner, we partner aggressively.
Even though Apple's cut you out of some markets?
Even though it's cutting us out of some markets, yes. At the end of the day, we both have a vested interest in doing what's right for the creative professional customer. Our relationship with Apple is like a relationship in any marriage, good or bad. It's an important relationship for both of us to maintain and make stronger, knowing that there are differences."

Apple Insider versucht Informationen zur nächsten iPod Generation zusammenzutragen:
"According to sources, while further revisions of the iPod will continue to integrate the iPod with aspects of the Mac OS (in an effort to entice iPod Windows users to convert), the primary focus will remain strictly on Music. Though the development cycle still remains in the early stages, rumors of wireless connectivity, and the ability to tap into the iTunes music store directly from the hand-held, have flourished in recent months."

7B85 wurde jetzt gesichtet (ich weiß, langsam wird es langweilig) und bei macosxrumors kann man noch ein wenig mehr Bericht zu den Eindrücken nachlesen, die die aktuellen Panther Builds wohl so hinterlassen, inklusive einer Vorhersage: "At this stage of the development, I guess it's possible for Apple to announce a very precise Mac OS X 10.3 release date. I think we can expect this kind of announcement by next week. As for the actual shipping date, I believe that we're not very far, I'd suggest late October or early November. It is also possible that we see separate releases of iCal 1.5, iSync 1.2 and Safari 1.1 before the release of Pather as the versions that are present in recent builds of Panther are final releases."

Geheimnisvolles in Panther

(Der Farb-Ventilator) ColorWhirled 1.0, keiner weiß, wofür das Teil gut ist, wenigstens gibt es ein Bild bei chaosmint und die Diskussion bei macrumors im Forum (dort wurde von jimthorn schon ein möglicher Zweck des Programms angesprochen: "Finally, an application that allows the user to start up the Spinning Beachball of Death at any time. Great for switchers who are used to the Blue Screen and miss system crashes. Cool!"). Scheinbar gab es das Programm bis hin zu 7B74, aber "the application doesn't do anything however." Äußerst spannend...
