Kleine Anekdote zu der bereits am Samstag bei mir verlinkten offiziellen Drittplatzierung des Virginia-Tech-Clusters bei den MacGuardians:

"Wie erwartet schaffte der Virginia-Cluster mit 10.28 TFLOPS den dritten Platz, aber das ist nur die halbe Geschichte: Nur knapp dahinter tauchte plötzlich ein Xeon-Cluster mit 1250 Dual-3GHz-Xeons auf, der in der Vorab-Version der Liste vollkommen gefehlt hat. Dieser verdrängte mit 9.8 TFLOPS den Itanic-Cluster (8.6 TFLOPS), der vorher auf Platz 4 war auf Platz 5. Erklärbar ist das nur dadurch, dass für diesen Cluster die Linpack-Ergebnisse erst ganz kurz vor Abgabeschluss eingereicht wurden.
Und jetzt ratet mal, wer die Nodes für den Cluster geliefert hat: Richtig! Dem Michel Dull seine tolle Schrauberfirma! ;-)
Also da brat mir doch einer einen Storch wenn das nicht ein misslungener Versuch war, den Mac "auf seinen Platz zu verweisen" und Apples Party zu sabotieren, indem man sie in letzer Minute doch noch in die Schranken verweist!"

Bei Apple-X.net wird über IBM als neue direkte Microsoft Konkurrenz gemutmaßt und die entsprechenden Auswirkungen für Apple:

"Today, unlike a decade ago, IBM is certainly less-than-friendly with Microsoft. IBM makes Apple's flagship processor. IBM's eServer line runs Linux. Its pServer line runs Unix. IBM itself is kicking Windows off of its campus entirely.
Now, for the hard evidence that IBM could really compete in the consumer world:
Not long ago, Novell--yes, that Novell--announced that it was purchasing SuSE Linux. Hm, okay. Nothing TOO significant there, other than the fact that SuSE's the most popular Linux distro out there, and that Novell was once the ruler of Windows networking with their Netware server operating system."

CRN.com listet die Top 25 der 'influential executives', darunter natürlich auch Steve Jobs:

"Once again, Steve Jobs, the king of digital cool, managed to raise Apple's mindshare, if not market share, though his quest to stay at the forefront of innovation in the PC and consumer arenas."

Über das Textverhalten in 10.3 gab es schon einige interessante Artikel (z.B. auch bei mir verlinkt), zwei weitere finden sich bei Quarter Life Crisis:

Und (gähn) Microsoft will auch Musik online verkaufen:
"A spokeswoman for the Redmond, Wash., software company confirmed that Microsoft's MSN Web site will offer such a service in 2004, but declined to provide further details. Microsoft executives previously have said the company was considering selling music online; the company's latest comments represent the most concrete statement yet of its intentions. A person familiar with the matter says Microsoft has been in regular contact with major music companies to discuss plans for a service."
