Dell agiert gegen G5 Werbung ('world's fastest PC')

Apples Bezeichnung des G5 als "the world's fastest, most powerful personal computer" löste von Beginn an nicht nur diverse Debatten zwischen Mac und Windows-Anwendern aus, sondern ebenso innerhalb der Mac-Anwenderschaft selbst. In England wurde im vergangenen November der damalige (öde) G5 Werbespot nicht akzeptiert und durfte dementsprechend nicht gesendet werden, was die Diskussion natürlich erneut ausbrechen ließ. Nun wurde die National Advertising Division auf Dells Anraten hin tätig und entschied, dass Apple keine ausreichenden Beweise für seine G5 Marketing-Aussagen vorzuweisen hätte und empfahl, diese deshalb einzustellen.
In Cupertino scherte man sich nicht weiter darum (die erwünschte Aufmerksamkeit war offensichtlich langanhaltend erreicht worden) und beschied lakonisch, dass die Kampagne bereits gelaufen ist und versprach: Apple "will be mindful of NAD's views in its future advertising", während Dell sich als selbst als Schützer des Konsumenten beschulterklopfte:
A Dell representative said in an e-mail: We "notified NAD because we felt there were some inaccuracies in Apple's advertisement and wanted to act on behalf of consumers in the marketplace who deserve accurate information on which to base their purchase decisions...Essentially, we felt that clarity in the marketplace benefits consumers, and NAD agreed."

Schön kommentiert bei Ars.technica:
"Curiously, Dell failed to complain when Windows XP ads implied that you could fly through the air or Intel implied that the Pentium 3 could make the internet run faster. But hey, in the world of false advertising and trumped up claims, it's usually wise to attack those who you don't like and ignore the 2x4 in your own eye, as it were. And if you're feeling really threatened, point and let out some nervous laughter while pretending that only Apple does this kind of thing. Cue the debates on which forms of lying with statistics are the worst..."
