Steve Ballmer, iPod Diebe und Zitationsweisen [Update_2]

»'iPod users are music thieves' says Ballmer«, so titelte gestern Andy McCue reißerisch bei silicon.com und das Geschrei war natürlich massiv. Im Artikel wird schnell klar, dass dies so zumindest nicht gesagt wurde, sondern Ballmer angeblich verlauten ließ: "We’ve had DRM in Windows for years. The most common format of music on an iPod is 'stolen'."
Jack Schofield berichtet für das Guardian Onlineblog ebenfalls von der Pressebegegnung mit Ballmer, aber der es entsteht ein erheblich differenzierterer Eindruck:
»Steve Ballmer: Let me first talk about DRM. Now we've had DRM in Windows for quite some number of years, there's nothing new about that....
Journalist: [interrupting] Having said that, that hasn't stopped, you know, pirates from running rampant....
SB: Of course not: nothing does! I mean, what's the most common format of music listened to on an iPod?
J: On an iPod....
SB: Stolen! Stolen!
J: [confused] On an iPod?
SB: Yes. Most people still steal music. [laughing] The fact that you can buy it and it's protected doesn't affect the fact that most people still steal [music]. I'd LOVE to say all problems have been solved, whether it's iPod/iTunes -- where Apple has done some nice work, no doubt about it -- but the truth of the matter is we can build these technologies, but as long as there's alternate forms of music acquisition, there will still be ways for people to steal music.«
Der ganze Artikel ist (inklusive Kommentare) ebenfalls lesenswert. Anzumerken bleibt, dass sich Jack Schofield bisher nicht gerade durch sonderlich faire Apple Berichterstattung hervorgetan hat, insofern ist seine Mitschrift ebenfalls mit Stirnrunzeln zur Kenntnis zu nehmen. So kann sich einmal mehr jeder nach Herzenslust die ins eigene Weltbild passende Variante aus den wilden Zitaten zusammenstückeln.

Update: Einen Tag später wurde Ballmer nochmals zu seiner Äußerung befragt: "I don't know what I said exactly, but it was bad," said Ballmer, drawing out the last word - "baaaaaad" - for added emphasis, according to Lars Pasveer, a journalist from ZDNet Netherlands." Bei silicon.com .

Update_2: Noch eine kleine Anmerkung in eigener Sache, da ich mich hier in der äußerst absurden Situation sehe, Ballmer gewissermaßen zu 'rechtfertigen'. Mir ging es lediglich darum, die stete Problematik von aus dem Kontext gerissenen Zitaten aufzuzeigen. Das macht weder Ballmer zum schweißlosen Unschuldskind noch lässt es mich Windowsierte Rechner kaufen (nur für den Fall, dass jemand dies tatsächlich gedacht haben sollte).
