Der iPod mini verhält sich seinen größeren Brüdern gegenüber nicht kannibalisierend, wie Greg Joswiak verriet:
"The iPod mini is doing as we hoped it would by growing the market for the iPod rather than cannibalizing its existing business," Joswiak said.
Was bei seiner letztendlichen Bepreisung kaum verwundern dürfte, schließlich bezog sich die Kannibalenfurcht auf einen 100$ iPod und wäre dabei sicher angebracht gewesen...

Apropos iPod und apropos 'kaum verwundern', er verkauft sich nach wie vor gut, wie am Rande eines MacObserver Artikels erwähnt:
"During February, the iPod player was the top portable music player at retail in the US, according to NPD Techworld. iPod unit sales, including two weeks of iPod mini unit sales, captured 33 percent of unit sales - a jump of eight percent since January. NPD's numbers do not include sales of iPod's through the Apple retail or online store." Der nächste Konkurrent, Billig-Player-Hersteller RCA hält gerade einmal 13.5% des Marktes.

Die selbsternannten Mac-Skeptiker von der PC World brauchten einen (laschen) Test, um erkennen zu können, dass Bluetooth am Mac problemloser einzusetzen ist:

Die richtige Akkupflege gehört zu den Grundsatz-Glaubensdebatten schlechthin, Andreas Richter hat etliche Tipps/Hinweise zu Akkus gesammelt; ein kleiner Auszug daraus zur Nutzung von Li-Ion/Li-Polymer Akkus (wie sie in i/PowerBooks und im iPod anzutreffen sind):
"-Sie können, dürfen, sollen jederzeit nachgeladen werden. Es gibt keinen Memory-Effekt.
-Handy, Notebook, Digitalkamera usw. also nicht bis zum Abschalten benutzen, sondern den Akku möglichst wieder laden, wenn er noch 20-30% Restkapazität hat.
Wird er immer leer gemacht, verringert sich dadurch zwar nicht direkt seine Lebenszeit oder Kapazität, aber die Anzahl möglicher Ladezyklen nimmt stark ab und damit sinkt bei häufigen Gebrauch eben doch die Lebenszeit.
-Es macht aber Sinn, einen solchen Akku trotzdem gelegentlich vollständig zu entladen. Das ist aber nicht für den Akku notwendig, sondern für die Elektronik, die die Kapazität ermittelt und woraus z.B bei Notebooks die angezeigte Laufzeit berechnet wird. Bei dieser Anzeige gibt es Messfehler, die sich bei jedem Ladezyklus summieren. Ein gelegentliches vollständiges Entladen setzt diese Werte zurück.
-Die optimale Lagerung erfolgt mit 40% Kapazität und bei niedrigen Temperaturen, aber nicht bei unter 0°C. Im Kühlschrank in einer dichten Box oder Tüte, daß kein Kondenswasser auf den Akkus entsteht, ist gut."

Wo wir gerade bei Grundsatzdebatten sind: Eine zwar bärtige Geschichte über den (Un)Sinn des Defragmentierens, aber ab und an erwähnenswert, da aus Apples eigener Knowledge Base:

Dell agiert gegen G5 Werbung ('world's fastest PC')

Apples Bezeichnung des G5 als "the world's fastest, most powerful personal computer" löste von Beginn an nicht nur diverse Debatten zwischen Mac und Windows-Anwendern aus, sondern ebenso innerhalb der Mac-Anwenderschaft selbst. In England wurde im vergangenen November der damalige (öde) G5 Werbespot nicht akzeptiert und durfte dementsprechend nicht gesendet werden, was die Diskussion natürlich erneut ausbrechen ließ. Nun wurde die National Advertising Division auf Dells Anraten hin tätig und entschied, dass Apple keine ausreichenden Beweise für seine G5 Marketing-Aussagen vorzuweisen hätte und empfahl, diese deshalb einzustellen.
In Cupertino scherte man sich nicht weiter darum (die erwünschte Aufmerksamkeit war offensichtlich langanhaltend erreicht worden) und beschied lakonisch, dass die Kampagne bereits gelaufen ist und versprach: Apple "will be mindful of NAD's views in its future advertising", während Dell sich als selbst als Schützer des Konsumenten beschulterklopfte:
A Dell representative said in an e-mail: We "notified NAD because we felt there were some inaccuracies in Apple's advertisement and wanted to act on behalf of consumers in the marketplace who deserve accurate information on which to base their purchase decisions...Essentially, we felt that clarity in the marketplace benefits consumers, and NAD agreed."

Schön kommentiert bei Ars.technica:
"Curiously, Dell failed to complain when Windows XP ads implied that you could fly through the air or Intel implied that the Pentium 3 could make the internet run faster. But hey, in the world of false advertising and trumped up claims, it's usually wise to attack those who you don't like and ignore the 2x4 in your own eye, as it were. And if you're feeling really threatened, point and let out some nervous laughter while pretending that only Apple does this kind of thing. Cue the debates on which forms of lying with statistics are the worst..."

Der patentierte iPod

Im Oktober 2002 reichte Apple das US Patent Nr. 20040055446 ein: 'Graphical user interface and methods of use thereof in a multimedia player'. Der MacObserver argumentiert, dass es ein grandioser Erfolg für Apple wäre, die Benutzeroberfläche des iPod patentiert zu haben, da genau dies den Player insbesondere von seiner Konkurrenz unterscheide:
"It seems the MP3 market is more sensitive to bad UIs than the desktop market. This makes some sense. When you are jogging or commuting, being able to just intuit the controls of a music player without paying close attention is really a must. Most other players simply do not offer such a straightforward and easy-to-use interface. So far, with regard to design, it's Apple iPod 1, rest of world 0. The question is can or will someone else come up with a navigation UI that is "good enough" without getting sued by Apple?

Should this patent application be allowed by the USPTO, it may turn out to be a big ace-in-the-hole for Apple. Had Apple secured patents on its desktop user interface, many years ago, the entire landscape of the computer industry would likely be very different today."

Apropos Patente, der MacObserver weiß noch von weiteren Apple Patenten im Zusammenhang mit Sprach-Steuerung/-Authentifizierung zu berichten, die möglicherweise im Zusammenhang mit dem vor kurzen bekanntgegebenen Spoken Interface stehen:
"The increased activity could spell some modest and welcome voice enhancements to OS X. Recently, Apple has beefed up its efforts in enhancing its Spoken Interface. It's no stretch to imagine that it will continue to make enhancements by incorporating these latest patented technologies into subsequent releases of its operating system."

Keine guten Aussichten für Apples Logo-Klage in China

Anfang März wurde bekannt, dass Apple in China um seine Markenrechte klagt, da die Staatliche Chinesische Behörde für Industrie und Handel zwar das Apple-Logo für den Computerbereich zugelassen hatte, allerdings nicht für Bekleidung, weil für diesen Bereich ein unangebissener Apfel, das Logo des chinesischen Textilienherstellers Guangdong Apples Industrial Co. Ltd., bereits 1998 als eingetragenes Warenzeichen besteht.
China Daily berichtet heute, dass Apples Chancen nach chinesischem Markenrecht ziemlich schlecht stehen, denn eine Firma besitzt nur in dem Sektor die entsprechenden Rechte, in dem sich auch tätig ist. Allerdings scheint Guangdong Apples durchaus gewillt zu sein, mit Apple in Verhandlung über den Verkauf des strittigen Logos zu treten.
Apples Kommentar: Es handele sich sowieso nur um eine Routineprozedur und
"She also refused to reveal the company's clothing plans in China"...

Wann kommt der iPod mini nach Europa? (Update und Antwort: Im Juli)

Zwei Monate länger sollte man sich im Rest der Welt gedulden, das war zumindest von Anfang an klar. Wenn auch nie ein Grund für die verzögerte Markteinführung des iPod mini genannt wurde, so wuchsen natürlich schnell entsprechende Theorien heran. Nachdem mit dem US-Start offensichtlich wurde, dass es sich beim iPod mini um einen gnadenlosen Erfolg handeln würde, stellt sich in Europa umso mehr die Frage, wann das begehrte Stück denn endlich zu uns kommt. Macworld UK meldet heute, dass die englischen Händler jetzt schon Angst vor einer 'iPod mini Dürre' haben:
Another reseller said: "I think Apple will ship a limited number of iPod minis in May, so that it can say the shipping date was not significantly delayed. But stocks will be very limited over the summer."
Und tatsächlich hat Apple bisher weder den endgültigen Preis für den iPod mini in Europa festgelegt, noch besteht die Möglichkeit, das Gerät im europäischen Apple Store online zu bestellen/vorzubestellen. Lediglich die email-Registrierung zur Benachrichtigung ist nach wie vor heimsuchbar, die Ungeduldigen wenden sich derweil an ebay, oder treten direkt die Reise nach Amerika an, von der sich mit etwas Glück wenigstens ein wirklich billiger iPod mit nach Hause nehmen lässt...

Gravis verschickt angeblich emails an iPod mini Vorbesteller, die eine Verfügbarkeit/Auslieferung auf Juni verschiebt. Kann das einer der Leser bestätigen?

Schon gibt es die entsprechende Apple Pressemeldung und Beantwortung der oben gestellten Frage:
"Apple today announced that it is moving the worldwide availability of iPod™ mini to July due to the much stronger than expected demand in the U.S. far exceeding the total planned supply through the end of June. Apple expects to ramp up its manufacturing of the iPod mini to meet worldwide demand in the July quarter."
Laut Reuters ist übrigens Hitachi der 'Bösewicht':
"We're actually consuming just about all the 4 gigabyte, 1- inch drives they make. As they make more, we'll get more," said Greg Joswiak, vice president of hardware product marketing for Apple.
Hitachi, which manufactures nearly all of the one-inch drives, expects to boost production to meet customer demand, Hitachi Storage Technologies Chief Executive Jun Naruse told Reuters earlier Thursday."

Frank Patalong hat für SPIEGEL ONLINE den iPod mini entdeckt:
"Das beginnt schon bei der Verpackung: Der Mini kommt in einem würfeligen, weißen Karton daher, nicht in einem wie auch immer gearbeiteten "Päckchen". Die Hardware-Deprivierung ist langsam schwer zu überbieten, AppleInsider liefert wenigstens ständige Hoffnungsstückchen:

Das Märchen mit der Geldstrafe

Es war einmal ein Mann, der verdiente rund 26.000 EUR im Jahr, hatte ein Sparbuch mit gut 43.000 EUR in der Hinterhand und wurde nach 5 Jahren auf der Anklagebank zu einer Geldstrafe in Höhe von 497 EUR und 20 Cent verurteilt...

Die stets gleichen Forderungen an iPod und iTMS

Die Wirren des Online-Musikmarktes schreiten fröhlich voran. Während Alex Salkever in der Business Week fordert, dass Apple endlich AAC+Fairplay zur Lizenzierung freigeben sollte, um besser gegen WMA positioniert zu sein:
"While Apple's competitors have embraced WMA, they hardly relish the thought of their business becoming heavily dependent on another standard that Redmond controls. I asked several of Apple's competitors in both music hardware and software if they would like to license FairPlay and include AAC as an optional format. They indicated that it's something they would be very interested in.", schreit der RealNetworks Chef Glaser nach einem WMA-tauglichen iPod: "Apple's (market) share will go down if they continue to do this. The only way to presently put songs on an iPod is to (buy) them from iTunes," Glaser said, referring to downloads purchased from online music stores." und unterschlägt dabei, dass sich der iPod natürlich problemlos ohne jegliche Online-Quelle bestücken lässt.

Derweil geht der Wal-Mart Music Store offiziell an den Start, nachdem dieser bereits seit Dezember in 'Beta'-Version zugänglich war und offensichtlich so viel verkauft hat, dass lieber keine Zahlen genannt wurden. Wal-Mart kann es egal sein, immerhin ist und bleibt man Amerikas umsatzstärkstes Unternehmen.
Zugleich in Deutschland: "MediaMarkt bietet die Musik in seinem Online-Shop ab sofort für maximal 99 Cent pro Track an. Damit reagiert das Unternehmen auf das Angebot des Ticketverkäufers Eventim-Music, der vergangene Woche als einer der ersten Anbieter von Inhalten der Branchenplattform PhonoLine mit einem Trackpreis von 99 Cent überraschte.[...]Der Verbraucher kann sich freuen, denn der in den USA übliche Preis von 99 Cent pro Download scheint sich auch in Deutschland durchzusetzen." schreibt heise .

Die Beta gab es bereits seit knapp zwei Monaten, nun folgt das finale iChat AV 2.1 . Entweder per Softwareaktualisierung oder über apple.com/ichat . Der Download ist 4.9 MB groß und setzt X.3 voraus.
