Die mauen Zahlen der iTunes Pepsi Promo [Update]

100 Millionen kostenlose Songs waren ursprünglich unterwegs in ihren Pepsiflaschendeckeln, eingelöst wurden -trotz 'Flaschenhack'- nach einem CNET Bericht lediglich 5 Millionen davon (morgen ist absolutes Ende der Promo): "We had hoped the redemptions would have been higher," said Katie Cotton, Apple's vice president of worldwide corporate communications.[...]
Cotton noted that the yellow-capped bottles with the Apple song codes were late in reaching some key markets. However, Cotton said the promotion did introduce a lot of people to iTunes."
Bei Pepsi selbst war man immerhin von rund 10-20 Millionen Liedern ausgegangen, Analysten hatten sogar 50 Millionen ins Spiel gebracht. Für Gesprächsstoff und Traffic sorgte man allemal.
Im weiteren Artikel ist davon die Rede, dass diese 5 Millionen schon in die Zahl der bisher heruntergeladenen iTMS-Songs (70 Millionen) eingeflossen seien, was einem Statement Apples konträr laufen würde, das einst TMO zitierte:
"The Mac Observer has also confirmed that Apple will not be including the sale of promotional downloads from the iTunes Music Store in any totals it releases in the future, contrary to other published reports. "We will not be including them in future download counts," an Apple spokesperson told The Mac Observer Tuesday. "Nielsen SoundScan does not include them in tracking our single track downloads and share of that market."
Wäre zumindest nicht das erste Mal, dass sich CNET Schnitzer bei seiner Apple-Berichterstattung erlaubt...

Internally, Apple is trying to put a good face on what is a bad situation. The company decided to backtrack on its policy of not including promotional iTunes download numbers in its total download count; Apple included the 5 million Pepsi redemptions in its 70 million download total, in what on the surface appears to be a way to slightly improve on its failed attempt to hit 100 million downloads by its one year anniversary of April 28.[...]
"I know we got our codes in late February, almost four weeks after the promotion started," said the distribution manager of a mid-west Pepsi bottling company. "Pepsi didn't seem to be in an hurry to get us what we needed. This promotion was not executed correctly and Pepsi knows it. Apple had no control over the situation, and that's unfortunate for them."

Schon ein paar Tage alt, aber sehr lesenswert, was Ron Johnson so im Detail zu den Apple Retail Stores auf der Success for Design Conference erzählte:
"Another questioner jokingly asked if Apple had considered serving up beverages at its Genius Bars. In fact, Johnson said, when the first stores opened, Apple offered free 4-ounce bottle of Evian water at it Genius Bars. However, so many people came to the Genius Bars, and so many asked for the water, that it became "really expensive." The company stopped the free water program after six months--and stuck to dispensing advice. He said Apple considered serving hot beverages, but that would require obtaining permits in most cities and more employee training, a process which was too complex. He reminded the audience that Apple lets visitors bring in their own beverages."

Business Week über Apples stetige Probleme mit seinen Chiplieferanten:
"Some experts still hold the view that in the long run, the IBM chip production problem is a blip and that Apple still looks smart for having thrown in with Big Blue. Fears that IBM's chip production problems are serious are seriously overblown, IBM Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer John Joyce said in a recent conference call. Ein Blick auf WMA zu AAC Konvertierung in iTunes 4.5 (Windows) bei elbewerk:
"Dabei werden die WMAs in das voreingestellte Importformat konvertiert, also AAC, MP3, AAC lossless, AIFF oder WAV. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass eine vernünftige WMA-in-MP3-Konvertiersoftware bis dato nicht kostenlos verfügbar war, ein sehr interessantes Feature. Wie die Konvertierung technisch realisiert ist, ist noch nicht bekannt. Neben den leicht geänderten Nutzerrechten bei iTunes 4.5 hat Apple einige Lücken geschlossen, so ist MyTunes unbrauchbar geworden, ebenso hat Playfair fürs erste scheinbar ausgespielt.

iTunes 4.5 ist endlich Mehrbenutzer-fähig (und weitere Details)

Sollte man mit 10.3 und iTunes 4 versuchen, unter einem zweiten angemeldeten Benutzer ebenfalls iTunes zu starten, bekam man folgende so simple wie nervende Fehlermeldung:

Zusätzlich wurde das gerade laufende Lied bereits beim Userwechsel abgebrochen (sprich iTunes stoppte).
Seit dem heutigen 4.5 Update lässt sich endlich unter jeglichem Nutzer nun fröhlich iTunes starten, beim Wechsel läuft es entsprechend weiter und sollte ein weiterer Nutzer iTunes nicht nur starten, sonder sogar in den Play-Modus versetzen, so hört man eben beide Lieder übereinander...
Ebenso lassen sich die Libraries unter den verschiedenen Nutzern über die Sharing Funktionalität schön nutzen:

Offiziell: iTMS mit über 70 Millionen Downloads und iTunes on Campus

Heute morgen hatte ich es schon erwähnt, inzwischen folgte die entsprechende Pressemeldung:
"In its first year, music fans have purchased more than 70 million songs, making it the number one online music service in the world with more than 70 percent market share of legal downloads for singles and albums. iTunes customers are currently purchasing 2.7 million songs per week, a rate of 140 million songs per year."
Damit ist Apple hinter seinem selbstgesteckten Ziel der 100 Millionen im ersten Jahr geblieben, allerdings wurden die Downloads der Pepsi iTunes Promotion nicht mit eingerechnet. Mehr dazu gibt es wohl heute Abend im Conference Call zu erfahren.
“iTunes has exceeded our wildest expectations during its first year, charting a new direction for the music industry,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The unbeatable combination of iTunes and the market-leading iPod offers music fans a seamless experience for discovering, buying, managing and enjoying their music anywhere.”

Noch ein paar Hinweise zum heimlichen QuickTime 6.5.1 Update:
"many important updates, including: Apple Lossless Encoder, a new lossless audio codec that retains the full quality of uncompressed CD audio while requiring only about half the storage space; significant improvements to AAC encoding, resulting in high-quality sound over a full range of audio frequencies; enhanced and support for iTunes 4.5 and other QuickTime-based applications."

Ebenso wie Napster drängt es auch Apple an die Unis und lanciert das entsprechende Programm 'iTunes on Campus':
"Provide your students with the best legal solution to manage, acquire, and listen to music by participating in the iTunes on Campus program. This program provides an institutional site license for iTunes and materials you can use for student communications. The program is easy-to-administer and is free."
Im Gegensatz zur Napster Variante scheinen hierbei allerdings keine verbilligten Musik-Kontingente für die Studenten zur Verfügung zu stehen.

iTunes 4.5 verfügbar, Info zu iTMS Downloadzahlen (über 70 Millionen), neuer iPod heute noch?

Bevor heute Abend Steve Jobs seinen iTMS Jubiläums-Call halten wird, ist bereits eine Neuerung ersichtlich: iTunes 4.5
Über den iTunes Music Store lässt sich die Liste der aktualisierten Funktionalitäten einsehen, über die apple.com/itunes die 10MB große neue Version herunterladen.

Außerdem ist auf der iTunes Seite zu lesen, dass bisher über 70 Millionen Titel verkauft wurden, der iTMS nun über 700.000 Songs verfügt und Musik neuerdings zwischen fünf Macs (PCs) geteilt werden darf (vorher waren es drei), dafür lassen sich Playlists nur noch sieben Mal unverändert brennen (vorher zehnmal), einzelne Lieder sind nach wie vor unlimitiert brennbar. Eine offizielle Pressemeldung steht noch aus.

Bei der Installation von iTunes wurde mir eine QT Warnung angezeigt, sieht so aus, als würde heute noch QT 6.5.1 kommen (die Standalone Variante gibt es bereits bei Apple direkt). Spannender allerdings, was Apple auf der Update Seite für iPod/iPod mini schreibt:
"iPod Update 2004-04-28 supports all models of iPod and iPod mini introduced before April 28, 2004." Geduld bis 17.30 Uhr ist angesagt...

Der geheimnisvolle iPod Entwickler

In einem NYT Artikel vom vergangen Sonntag (im gestrigen MacOrama verlinkt) ist sein Name erstmals in die breitere Öffentlichkeit gedrungen, Tony Fadell soll der Kopf hinter dem iPod sein:
"He would eventually build a 35-member team of engineers from Apple and other companies. Using a version of a microprocessor that powers most cellphones, the group brought the iPod together rapidly by relying on software licensed from a small start-up, Pixo, a cellphone software company founded by Paul Mercer, another former Apple engineer."
Durch Apple's restriktive Kommunikationspolitik war bisher kein Reporter in der Lage mit Herrn Fadell persönlich zu sprechen und so verwundert es nicht weiter, dass erste Unklarheiten entstehen. Leander Kahney hat in seinem The Cult of Mac Blog versucht, ein wenig mehr an Informationen zum angeblichen 'Vater des iPod' zusammenzutragen:
"One source who talked but asked not to be named, cautioned that Fadell's story should be treated with skepticism. The source noted that the hard part of the iPod – the device's interface and integration with iTunes– was done by Apple's engineers. That Fadell is taking credit for the iPod "sounds just like him," the source said."

Was kommt zum iTunes Music Store Anniversary Conference Call? [Update]

Morgen um 17.30 MESZ lädt Steve Jobs Presse und Analysten zum iTMS Jubiläums-Conference Call, bisher gibt es allerdings noch keinen Hinweis auf eine QT-Mithörmöglichkeit. Was darf man erwarten? Eine Menge Zahlen und frohe Botschaften sowieso, aber wie wäre es zur Abwechslung mit iTunes 5, näheren Infos zum iTMS Europa, oder gar der nächsten iPod Generation (auf die zumindest AppleInsider verweist)?

Update:
Laut TMO wird es definitiv keinen Live(Audio)Stream geben:
"Unlike quarterly earnings conference calls that are available to everyone to listen to live and repeated, Apple will not be making Wednesday's iTunes event available in a streaming format for the general public, a company spokesperson told The Mac Observer."
