Einige Analysten glauben, dass Apple von den anstehenden massiven PC-Neukäufen profitieren könnte. Aus einem MacNewsWorld-Artikel: "Those ISP contracts are expiring and Wilcox believes these same buyers, who have already previously invested in non-PC home entertainment such as large screen televisions, are now in the market for computers.
"This can have an impact on Apple," Wilcox said. "There is increasing interest in home networking and multiple-PC households."

In eigener Sache: Momentan kann es hin und wieder etwas zäher im fscklog zugehen (und offenbar auch zu Darstellungsfehlern kommen), da Typepad ein Problem mit irgendwelchen Storage Servern heimsucht, welches in den nächsten Tagen erst behoben werden soll und am Samstag vormittag zu einer rund zweistündigen kompletten Unerreichbarkeit führen wird. Die Kommentarfunktion ist momentan ebenfalls äußerst langsam, auch hier hilft nur Geduld. Ansonsten allen fscklog-Lesern ein schönes Pfingswochenende, bis Montag wird es hier voraussichtlich sowieso sehr updatefrei werden...

iTunes Music Store Europa ab Mitte Juni?

In einem Reuters Artikel über Sony's Connect Store, der nächsten Monat in Europa mit 300.000 Tracks an den Start gehen soll, wird nebenbei erwähnt, dass Apple ebenfalls alle Lizenzvereinbarungen zusammenhätte, um ab Mitte Juni mit dem iTMS in Europa verfügbar zu sein. Napster war bereits vor kurzem überraschend in Großbritannien gestartet.

Welchen Marktanteil besitzt der iPod weltweit wirklich?

Apple selbst nennt meist einen iPod Marktanteil von rund 40 bis 50 Prozent in den Hauptmärkten USA, Japan und Europa. Da aus vielen anderen Gegenden kaum genaue Verkaufszahlen zu erhalten sind, ist der weltweite Marktanteil erheblich schwerer zu ermitteln, insofern versucht sich Alex Salkever in der Business Week über die Chiplieferanten an die Frage heranzuwagen und kommt mit seinen Berechnungen auf einen weltweiten Marktanteil des iPod zwischen 8-10% (von allen Flash und Festplattenbasierten Geräten): "The iPod is clearly the market leader in digital-music players. And it's certainly the coolest in the pack. But a quick look at the big picture shows that Apple has yet to achieve dominance in the sector, despite the hype."

Auf der Suche nach dem Nachfolger des G5

Während MacRumors.com darauf hinweist, dass der PowerPC 975 bis zum heutigen Tage ein reines Gerücht ist (verknüpft mit einem Hinweis, der sich auf einer Gerüchteseite ausschließlich mit Schmunzeln lesen lässt) "...there appears to be no reliable information that the PowerPC 975 is an actual planned product. Instead, it should be regarded as a possible invention of the rumor world until further confirmation is provided", erläutert Tony Smith bei The Register, dass die Namensgebung selbst natürlich unerheblich sei: "Does it matter? Inasmuch as IBM is almost certainly working on multi-core Power-derived PowerPC processors, no it doesn't. It's also working on a Power5-based powerPC. The fine point of what the products are actually called is irrelevant - particularly since Apple rarely acknowledges which specific chip it is using in any given system. Its admission that the Xserve G5 uses the 970FX was a rare slip-up."

Ein Interview mit Jesse Stein, dem PowerPC marketing programs manager bei IBM, liest sich bei MacNewsWorld:
"MNW: What influence has Apple have on the G5's development?
Stein: During the PowerPC 970's development Apple was identified as one of the primary customers. Their product and intellectual property requirements have had significant influence on the 970's development and have helped shape the final product.[…]
MNW: When can we expect to see a G6 from IBM? What is the timeline for PowerPC processor advancement?
IBM does not comment on unannounced products."

Apple veröffentlicht OS X 10.3.4 [Update: Erste Anmerkungen]

Update:
Die Aktualisierung verlief bei mir zumindest völlig problemlos, im bisherigen Betrieb ließen sich ebenfalls keine Fehler feststellen, Programmstarts erscheinen leicht beschleunigt, allerdings wurde nur die telnet Problematik bei den offenen Sicherheitslücken behoben! Anleitung zum Stopfen der restlichen bisher bekanntgewordenen Schwachstellen findet sich hier im fscklog.

Da ist es auch schon, 10.3.4 per Software Aktualisierung, 41 MB schwer:

Gestern gab es noch Build 7H63 von 10.3.4 für die Entwickler, wie AppleInsider mitteilte: "With the seeding of build 7H60, sources said that the Mac OS X 10.3.4 quality assurance testing is near complete and the system update could be released as early as this week."
Ich tippe einfach mal ganz vorsichtig und komplett unverbindlich auf den heutigen Abend.

Man kann sich über Browser-Mangel unter OS X zwar kaum beschweren, wer gerne einen weiteren hätte, kann sich mit Shiira vertraut machen: "Shiira is a web browser based on Web Kit and written in Cocoa. The goal of the Shiira Project is to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari. All source code used in this software is publicly available."

Zugleich gibt es die Roadmap zu Camino 0.9, die sich gut anhört: "A new tab widget, increasing performance and allowing us to customize the appearance over the OS tabs. Also lets us do fun stuff like dragging to reorder tabs."

Test der aktuellen PowerBook-Reihe in der Macworld, dort hat man einzig und alleine zu bemängeln, dass es keinen Zwischenschritt zwischen 12" und 15" gibt (meine eigenen Eindrücke zum aktuellen 15" gab es hier im fscklog).

Ein alte nette Sitte bei Apple, die mir bisher entgangen war, bei Sci-Fi Hi-Fi: "As many readers undoubtedly know, there is a longstanding tradition at Apple whereby employees are allowed to put more or less whatever job title they want on their business cards. One of my friends, who works on disc burning, for example, uses the title “Coaster Toaster”; another uses the intriguing designation “Mac OS X Meta Person.”

Lahme Gerüchte zum nächsten iPod bei AppleInsider: "According to a seemingly reliable, yet unconfirmed report, the microchip Apple plans to use in its 4th generation iPod will not only allow for hardware decoding of MPEG-4/AAC, but will also boast several ENCODE capabilities. The source of the tip refused to provide further comment on other known details of the chip, but claimed no inside knowledge of how Apple plans on using the ENCODE capability in the new iPod, noting only that it would would be churlish of the company to ignore the feature."
Übrigens ist der Chip im iPod bereits jetzt theoretisch in der Lage zu MP3 encoding, der im iPod mini zusätzlich zu JPEG decoding.

Secunia weist bei Macworld UK ebenfalls darauf hin, dass Apple's Security Update vom vergangenen Freitag (mit seltsamerweise dem heutigen Datum versehen) nicht die komplette Sicherheitslücke schließt. Alle Hinweise zur behelfsmäßigen Stopfung finden sich aktualisiert hier im fscklog.

Pixar ist immer noch partnerlos und Steve Jobs laut einem IHT Artikel angeblich erstaunlich schüchtern, was Verhandlungen angeht, da er möglicherweise einen erneuten Deal mit Disney bevorzugen würde: "Some say he is holding out hope of another deal with Disney depending on what happens with Michael Eisner, the Disney chief executive. Dissident shareholders tried this year to remove Eisner, whom Jobs has blamed for his breakup with Disney. Others say Jobs has plenty of time to find a distributor and gear up for the 2006 release of the first film that Pixar will finance on its own.[…]One person who has talked to Jobs said he was less inclined to pick a company like Sony because its new music service competes directly with Apple's iTunes, which could make the relationship awkward."

Interoperabilität ist nicht nur ein schönes Wort, sondern bei Programmen etwas mehr als Feines. NetNewsWire und ecto werden ab sofort wenig besser miteinander kommunizieren: "One is that with the forthcoming NetNewsWire 2.0 release, you can now set ecto as the external blog editor. You'd be reading a cool feed in NetNewsWire, select a command, and - whoosh - the feed item's link and contents appear in a new entry in ecto. Like it? I sure do. The second one is that at times you may be inserting a new link in your blog entry. Perhaps that link is from a blog and you would like to check up on that blog more often. While in the "Create a Link" dialog, just hit the NetNewsWire button and - whoosh - the newsreader is launched and the url is added as a new subscription. Like it? I sure do.
