Bei Daring Fireball wird in einem (wie immer empfehlenswerten) Artikel die Sicherheitsdebatte zwischen OS X und Windows weitergeführt und dabei die alte gebetsmühlenartig wiederholte 'security through obscurity' Theorie entblößt: "The reason this argument is so popular with Windows apologists is that it’s a convenient bit of rhetoric. They say it’s so, we say it’s not. You can’t get past this argument, because it can’t be disproven without the Mac OS actually attaining a Windows-like market share." Think Secret mit einem Special Report über Belegschaft und Bezahlung in den Apple Retail Stores: "A more recent Apple document says that the stores pay an average of $905,000 per year in payroll, or about 35% of their operating expenses. The disparity is even more dramatic when considering that these labor plans were drawn up with 45-foot stores in mind; today, the smaller 30-foot model is more common and is less expensive for the company to staff and maintain." Vor kurzem wurde bekannt, was man als Store Manager bei Apple so verdient.

Wo sind die wirklich interessanten Apple Gerüchte? [Update]

Die WWDC naht unaufhaltsam, kaum mehr als 3 Wochen verbleiben, bis Steve Jobs die Bühne erklimmen wird und -so viel ist sicher- euphorisch erste Blicke auf 10.4 Tiger ermöglicht. Derweil ist die Gerüchtewelt seit Anfang Juni in steigender Aufregung, unermüdlich angeführt von AppleInsider, die erste Fotos vom vermutlich nächsten Power Mac G5 veröffentlichten und gestern berichteten, dass Apple den Händlern bereits mitteilte, sie sollten keine iMac G4 Lieferungen mehr erwarten und die Power Mac G5 Bestellungen verzögerten sich um mehrere Wochen (MacBidouille berichtet seit Tagen ähnliches von der Händlerfront). Selbst CNET erachtete die AppleInsider Informationen offenbar für glaubhaft genug, um sie in einige eigene Geschichte zu vermatschen und Apple's Rechtsabteilung gab dem ganzen weitere Legitimität.
So war/ist es zwar nett, in weitreichenden Diskussionen über Details in den G5 Bilder zu diskutieren, aber für die Aussage, dass bald neue Power Macs und neue iMacs erscheinen, braucht man nun wirklich keine Gerüchteseite. Beide Rechner sind so dermaßen überfällig, dass einfach etwas Neues kommen muss, ob dies nun noch vor der WWDC geschieht, oder direkt in der dortigen Keynote ist letztendlich unerheblich. Die eigentlichen Fragen danach, ob die 3GHz Power Macs bis Sommer verfügbar sind (sowie deren Specs) und ob der G5 tatsächlich seinen Weg in einen (zudem neu gestalteten) iMac finden wird, sind nach wie vor nur durch teilweise Monate alte Gerüchte 'beantwortet'.
Insofern hoffe ich auf viele weitere ebenso wirre wie unterhaltsame Gerüchte in den kommenden Wochen, z.B. über geheimnisvolle Lifestyle Devices, iPhones, oder von mir aus mal wieder Apple Set Top Boxen, Projektoren sowie den Quad-G5 Außerdem würde mich wirklich ungemein interessieren, wieso MacRumors so gut wie keine eigenen Gerüchte in letzter Zeit mehr lieferte, ob dort möglicherweise alles für die letzten Pre-WWDC Tage aufspart wird?

Update 07. Juni 2004:
Wie gerufen meldet sich MacRumors mit der gewünschten Gerüchteart zurück: "...but some scattered whispers have suggested "something else" altogether... related to a hangable display/appliance." Sehr schön.
Und Geekzone wärmt doch tatsächlich die alte iPhone/SE Geschichte wieder auf.

Rumor: iTunes Music Store Europa ab 15.06.04 [Update_2: Apple lädt nach London]

Ganz neu unter die Gerüchteköche mischte sich heute das (Berlinern sicherlich bekannte) Radio Fritz, das auf seiner Seite vom einem Start des iTMS in Deutschland am 15.06. (der immerhin ein Dienstag wäre) schreibt: "Das hat das Fritz aus gut unterrichteten Kreisen erfahren. Starttermin soll demnach der 15.6. sein. Apple selbst wollte das auf Nachfrage nicht kommentieren."
Der Starttermin Mitte Juni stimmt mit Gerüchten überein, die Reuters schon Ende Mai in die Welt tickerte, es könnte sich also genauso gut lediglich um eine späte Wiederkäuung handeln.
Ebenso unterhaltsam und zudem in losem Zusammenhang ist die email einer 'seriösen Quelle', die heute bei O'Grady's Powerpage landete: "First of all, I don't know the product or service that is being announced. Second of all, I'm not sure of the exact date. But I can tell you that Apple is VERY busy getting ready for some kind of new product/service announcement next week sometime."

Update 07.06.04:
Laut einer Quelle, die MacRumors auf seiner Seite 2 nennt, soll der kanadische iTMS ebenfalls am 15. Juni starten.
Bei Pocket-lint.co.uk wird ein Times Artikel zitiert (der leider nicht verlinkt ist), nach dem der UK iTMS bis Ende Juni verfügbar sein soll: "According to The Times newspaper Apple is preparing to launch its iTunes service in Britain by the end of the month. The company is understood to have developed localised versions of the popular iTunes download service for Britain, France and Germany."

Update_2 07.06.04:
"The biggest story in music is about to get even bigger."

macnews.de meldet, dass Apple europäische Journalisten zu einem 'großartigen Music-Event' in London geladen hat, wohlgemerkt am 15. Juni. So langsam glaube ich an den Start des iTMS Europa, jetzt bleibt nur noch der Stückpreis spannend, die bisherigen Gerüchte drehten sich um 1,29 EUR pro Titel.

AppleInsider: "Meanwhile, sources close to the project claim that Apple CEO and 'control freak' Steve Jobs is personally selecting the home page content for the launch. During the event Apple is expected to detail which countries it will serve and with how many tunes."

Das Problem des verschwundenen Netzwerk Icons

Mit dem Update auf 10.3.3 und der damit einhergehenden Verbesserung der Netzwerkhandhabung, schlich sich bei mir und -nach etlichen Forenbeiträgen zu urteilen- manch anderem ein zumindest ästhetisch störender Bug ein:

So verschwand das Netzwerk Icon dauerhaft im Finder Fenster, während das Netzwerk Icon der Seitenleiste einen sinn-/wirkungslosen eject button spendiert bekam. Nach nur kurzer erfolgloser Lösungssuche, gab ich erstmal auf und projizierte meine Bugfix-Wünsche auf das 10.3.4 Update, welches sich dann zwar als feine Systemaktualisierung, aber nicht als Iconwiederbringer entpuppte. Nach erneuter Suche stieß ich dann im Apple eigenen Forum auf die erhoffte Lösung:
Man öffne sein Terminal
manövriere sich per cd /Network in den entsprechenden Ordner
enthülle per ls -la den Übeltäter (der symbolic link .localized)
entferne ihn per sudo rm .localized
Zwar ist die Anleitung ansonsten Hintergrunderklärungslos, aber es funktioniert wenigstens und Nebenwirkungen konnte ich bisher keine feststellen. Seitdem habe ich nicht nur mein Netzwerk Icon wieder, sondern die auf manuell geschaltete iDisk lässt sich endlich wieder synchronisieren, was sie vorher penetrant verweigerte (wobei mir der Problemzusammenhang vollkommen unklar ist).

Die Computerworld mag das 15" PowerBook (ich natürlich auch), fordert nur eine höhere Auflösung und demnächst mal einen G5 darin, aber wer wünscht sich das nicht? "So what we have here is an evolutionary, not revolutionary, update to the midrange PowerBook line. The 1.5-GHz chip manages to make this the fastest 15-in. model yet from Apple, a laptop reasonably good on battery power and, most important given the other goodies included (wireless networking, 64MB of video RAM, Universal Serial Bus 2.0 and FireWire 800 ports), one that's reasonably priced."

Die Sony-McDonald's Promo hat inzwischen ihren offziellen Anstrich erhalten, Reuters schreibt: "McDonald's will launch a U.S. promotion on June 8 offering customers who buy a Big Mac Extra Value meal an access code worth one free song download at Sony's Connect music store. The so-called Big Mac Meal Tracks promotion, which will run for six to 10 weeks, will later expand to Europe, McDonald's said." Über eine genaue Anzahl der potenziell verschenkten Songs ist bislang allerdings nichts bekannt geworden.

Die Fotos vom nächsten Power Mac G5

Das sind Gerüchte, die man einfach gern haben muss. AppleInsider konnte ein Bedienungshandbuch für den Power Mac aufgabeln, in dem schon die lange gemunkelte Rev. 2 zu sehen sein könnte: "Apple sometimes prepares stock photography of products prior to their release. With revisions of the Power Mac G5 previously scheduled to arrive months ago, source said it is likely that these photos could represent an overview of the new 90-nanometer Power Mac G5, now destined for a late June introduction."

Sollte sich dies auch nur halbwegs bewahrheiten, dürfte das zum zweiten Steve-Zornausbruch in ledigleich zwei Tagen führen...

Apple verspricht weitere Updates zum Schließen der Sicherheitslücke

Im Rahmen einiger OS X Sicherheitslücken war Apple in den letzten Wochen teilweise in berechtigt heftige Kritik geraten, nicht nur was das Ausbleiben einer kompletten Behebung der bekannten Lücken betrifft, sondern ebenso hinsichtlich der ziemlich laschen Kommunikationspolitik, die nicht gerade zu größerem Vertrauen beitrug. In einem ausgiebigen CNET Artikel zum Thema stellt Phil Schiller nun nochmals klar: "We fixed one part of what is a complex problem. We're working on fixes to the other parts, and there will be more coming," Schiller said. "We were more interested in getting out the first part of the fix as fast as we can...It can help people right now. Now we'll follow up with more things as we finish the rest of this complex problem." Insgesamt ein äußerst lesenswerter Artikel, obwohl die gerne verwendete 'security through obscurity' theorie mal wieder kräftig herhalten muss. Der Workaround zur Systemabdichtung findet sich nach wie vor hier im fscklog und ist immer noch jedem zu empfehlen, selbst wenn es nach wie vor keinen bekannten Schadensfall gibt. Apple hat übrigens eine spezielle Product Security Seite über die entsprechend Kontakt aufgenommen werden kann.

MacOrama für den 03. Juni 2004

AppleInsider liefert angebliche Details zu 10.4 Tiger, die sich allerdings nicht nur unspektakulär wie die letztjährigen Informationen zum damals unveröffentlichten Panther (bessere .mac Integration, verbesserter Finder) lesen, sondern auch nicht 'positively confirmed' werden können, was für eine Gerüchteseite wohl gleichbedeutend ist zu 'wild an den Haaren herbeigezogen'. Am Ende des Artikels gibt es noch Gemunkel über einen Erscheinungstermin im Oktober und eine Preissteigerung im Vergleich zu 10.3, das Geschrei darf also schonmal seinen Lauf nehmen...

For many years, I was a Microsoft loyalist. While aware of Microsoft’s shortcomings, I always believed that the Soft did its best to improve products over time, as it did with Windows XP. But recently, I’ve had a crisis of faith. Perhaps I’ve rebooted Windows one too many times. Over the past year, my frustration with Windows grew, as did my envy of Apple’s cool new products."

Alex Salkever hält in seiner Business Week Kolumne den (kommenden) Power Mac G5 reif für einen Käuferansturm: "That's no surprise, considering that the upgrade cycle is running late. According to analyst Michelle Gutierrez of Schwab Soundview Capital Markets, most design and publishing companies are using Apple hardware that's four years old -- a year older than the historical average. Says Gutierrez: "We're definitely talking about pent up demand.[…] More speed, more ads, and fewer bugs looks like a sweet confluence for Apple -- one that Steve Jobs can take to the bank in the coming quarters."

Apple is said to have licensed Adobe's own Normalizer for PDF conversion within the Preview 2.10 application. Indeed, in my testing, a PostScript file, properly saved from the application (with fonts and high resolution images embedded, and saved using an appropriate printer "driver," such as Adobe PDF) opened in Preview does result in a "print-worthy" PDF file. When such a file is viewed in Acrobat Document Properties, the PDF Producer is listed as  PSNormalizer.framework."

MacFixIt glaubt den Grund für die Airport-Probleme bei PowerBooks mit über 1GB RAM gefunden zu haben: "Only 30 of the 32 address lines were connected. That's 1 GB. If the AirPort Extreme tries to access (DMA) higher addresses, it fails and shuts down and you get no notice and no way to remedy it other than switching to ethernet or restarting." Kann allerdings leider auch keine Abhilfe bieten.

Still, the Mac is not a good choice if you depend heavily on a Windows-only application. But with a more compatible version of Office, plus Virtual PC to run the occasional Windows program, the Mac should get new life in business. It has definitely earned the chance."

60GB iPod ab Sommer? [Update_3]

Erstaunlich redefreudig war nach einem MacCentral Bericht ein Unternehmenssprecher von Toshiba, der auf der Computex ankündigte, dass die zukünftige eigene 1,8inch 60GB Festplatte in Apple bereits einen fleißigen Kunden gefunden habe. Ab Juli/August soll das Laufwerk in Massenproduktion gehen und wird wohl ohne Zweifel Verwendung im 'größten' iPod finden. Momentan beliefert Tsohiba Apple mit 350.000 seiner 1,8inch Festplatten im Monat. Zu allen anderen fröhlichen Spekulationen über die nächste iPod Generation mehr unter anderem hier im fscklog.

Update:
AppleInsider will aus einigen besonders glaubwürdigen Quellen erfahren haben, dass die 4. iPod Generation wohl erst im September vorgestellt werden soll: "As previously reported, the company has been testing prototypes of the new media player, which is said to contained a 2-inch color LCD screen, an improved dock connector (with video-out capabilities), an advanced embedded operating system, and 50GB of hard disk space." Oder doch eben 60GB.

Update_2 03.06.04:
TMO weist vollkommen zu Recht darauf hin, dass es von Toshiba's Seite aus keine offizielle Mitteilung zur neuen Platte, geschweige denn zu Apple als Kunden, gäbe: "When asked to explain the news attributed to its Asian division, Ms. Dalphy said, "We don't really know (why this announcement was made). We don't understand the details, but officially, we have not made an announcement of this product and I can't answer any other questions or even confirm what has been reported." Ms. Dalphy would also not confirm that Apple has already committed to using the new miniature hard drive. "It is our standard policy not to discuss who our customers are that use our products as original equipment add-ons," she said."
Man sieht förmlich Steve Jobs, wie er gestern wutentbrannt zum Telefonhörer griff...

Update_3 03.06.04:
Laut Think Secret war man bei Apple tatsächlich enorm unerfreut, der Vergleich mit der alten ATI-Geschichte liegt dabei auf der Hand: "Sources inside Apple confirmed late Wednesday that company executives are wondering, "what the hell happened? This is a major !@#$&* up and you don't have to be a genius to figure out what is coming next from Apple," said one source close to the iPod maker. "Apple is trying to get answers from Toshiba, but it appears they are just as in the dark as to what happened. Apple is not happy."[…] "Somebody opened their big mouth and either it was taken out of context or was 'off-the-record' or this person really did just confirm it all," said a hard drive industry analyst familiar with how technology companies work business relationships. "There is no good way to handle this now. Toshiba screwed up and it could have major consequences, depending on how upset Steve Jobs is."
