Zwei Artikel bei eWeek.com zu IBM und dem PowerPC 970FX.
Der erste dreht sich um die nicht erreichten 3GHz: "IBM's yields are, of course, a secret, and IBM executives declined to divulge specifics. "I don't believe IBM made that prediction publicly," said Jesse Stein, IBM's PowerPC marketing programs manager, of the 3GHz prediction actually made by Jobs."
Der zweite weist in Richtung PowerBook G5: "Norman Rohrer, chief designer of the PowerPC 970FX chip used in Apple's Power Mac G5 desktops and Xserve servers, said the same chip that IBM uses for its desktop machines can also be used comfortably within future PowerBook notebooks through a power-management technique called "PowerTune." Rohrer would not comment on the time frame for a chip incorporating PowerTune. Industry insiders said a PPC 970FX-based notebook is not expected to ship before the end of the year. At the same time, a small-form-factor iMac would require a similar thermally managed processor. Reports recently circulated that Apple will introduce a G5-based iMac at WWDC in San Francisco."

Erste Screenshots von 10.4 Tiger? [Update_4]

MacRumors liefert ziemlich unverifizierte Screenshots der 10.4 Vorabversion (Build 8A162), die am Montag an die Entwickler verteilt werden soll:

Safari 2.0 soll enthalten sein (RSS-Feed Unterstützung und 'Private Browsing' Funktion inklusive), die Firewall soll über einen Stealth Modus verfügen und Expose um eine Möglichkeit namens Dashboard erweitert werden, mit der ein Schnellzugriff auf häufig benutzte Programme möglich werde: "The tools available to users in the Tiger build include Address Book, Calculator, Calendar, iTunes, Stickies and World Clock. The tools provided however, are heavily themed with un-Mac OS X-like styles. It's assumed that developers will be able to provide additional 'Gadgets'."
Wie real diese Informationen auch immer sein mögen, das ist wohl exakt, was man von einem Pre-WWDC-Keynote Wochenende so erwarten kann.

Update:
Die Nachricht wurde inzwischen bei MacRumors auf Seite 2 verschoben und lässt sich damit noch mehr in Zweifel ziehen.

Inzwischen sind die Screenshots zwar nicht auf die MacRumors Seite 1 zurückgewandert, dennoch glaubt man dort, wenn auch die Screenshots falsch sein mögen, dass zumindest die dahinterliegenden Konzepte ihren Weg in 10.4 nehmen werden. Zusätzlich gibt es weitere Screenshots, u.a. von der Safari RSS-Feed Einbindung und ein neues Programm namens Pipeline: "The application reportedly provides non-programmers the ability to link together actions in Applescript to create their own self-contained Applescript applications."

"But today, one reliable Think Secret source said that the screenshots are genuine; MacRumors also confirmed that many of the concepts depicted in the shots are a part of 10.4. Some users pointed to interface mistakes and spelling errors, but such oddities are common in pre-release software. In addition, a source told Think Secret that Tiger is less complete than 10.3 Panther was at this point last year, explaining that lack of groundbreaking features that can be shown today."

Update_4:
Apple Legal hat sich inzwischen bei MacRumors die Bilder vorgeknöpft, die damit entsprechend offline sind. Bei Think Secret sind diese zumindest momentan noch zu sehen.

Keine neuen iMacs zur WWDC, sagt Think Secret

Wie das mit Gerüchteseiten nun einmal so ist, auch Think Secret hat sicher nicht die letzte Weisheit für sich gepachtet, aber recht akkurat liegt man dort doch meist. Insofern sollte man nicht allzu schwer auf einen iMac G5 zur Keynote am kommenden Montag rechnen, zumal dieser auf einer Entwicklerkonferenz sowieso recht wenig zu suchen hätte: "Sorry, but this dog just won't point. Employees tell us that Apple is laughing at the rumors on this one -- spearheaded by recent analyst prognostications -- and the company is loving the hype that just makes everyone want to watch WWDC even more." Neue Displays soll es jedenfalls geben und der Rest der Zeit gehört eben 10.4 Tiger.

Alias Adressen für den .Mac email-Account

Still und heimlich hat Apple für sein .Mac Kunden die Möglichkeit hinzugefügt, zusätzlich zur eigenen 'Haupt'-.Mac email-Adresse weitere Alias Adressen für diverse Zwecke anzulegen und diese direkt farblich zu kennzeichnen.

Zu finden in den Prefs des .Mac Webmail Zugangs, dort lassen sich scheinbar bis zu fünf verschiedene Adressen anlegen: "Note: You can maintain up to five aliases at a time. If you are currently maintaining five aliases and decide to delete one, you must wait seven days before you can create a new alias to replace the one you deleted. The seven-day waiting period also affects any other alias you delete within seven days following this deletion." Zu lesen bei MacDailyNews. Apple scheint seinen email-Dienst langsam der Konkurrenz anzupassen, jetzt bleibt zu hoffen, dass die recht albernen 15MB Speicherplatz bald kräftig aufgestockt werden.

RealPlayer 10 für OS X nächste Woche?

Die RealPlayer Freeware erfreut sich nicht gerade sonderlicher Beliebtheit, aber was Version 10 nach einem exklusiven TMO Bericht nächste Woche mitbringen soll, klingt nicht allzu kläglich.

So soll z.B. ein integrierter Browser dabei sein (wer auch immer den braucht), Unterstützung für Rendezvous und vor allem QT Playback im Vollbild geboten werden, was Apple hoffentlich dazu verleitet, dieses längst überfällige Detail endlich in der kostenlosen QT Fassung zugänglich zu machen. Außerdem soll der in der Windows Version kostenpflichtige Equalizer gleich enthalten sein. "RealPlayer 10 for Mac OS X will be a free product. It will require Mac OS X 10.2 or later with Safari installed and a minimum of 256MB of memory. The company is recommending 512MB of RAM. When contacted for confirmation for this report, a RealNetworks spokesperson refused comment."

Der iPod, das Handwerkszeug für Verbrecher

Trotz Steve Jobs nachhaltiger "It's the music, stupid" Anspielung wird der iPod natürlich desöfteren 'entfremdet', sei es zum bequemen Umhertragen des kompletten menschlichen Genoms, oder sei es zur Fertigstellung des zweiten und dritten LOTR Teiles. In England durfte sich nun ein ganzer Gerichtssaal im Rahmen einer Auto-Betrugsserie von der Zweckmäßigkeit eines iPod überzeugen, wie in den BBC News zu lesen ist: "Mr Fenhalls [der Staatsanwalt] told the jury: "In addition to storing music, you can store other kinds of data on an iPod. "And in this case it was used to store templates for false documents, letters that could be forged, details of false identities and credit card numbers." He said so much material had been downloaded from the iPod by police it had filled a Lever Arch file almost to capacity."

However, according to hearsay, we gather that the Windows version exploits the 'autorun' option, and that the Mac version affects the auto play option. On Windows, when a CD is loaded, a text file called autorun.inf is read, and any instructions within it are executed. In this case, the machine is instructed to install some manner of DRM driver that prevents copying. We haven't seen either the .inf file or any of the executables, so we can't say how or at what level it accomplishes this - or if indeed it actually does accomplish this."
