Ein Wired Artikel über Spotlight, in dem unter anderem Ken Bereskin ("Ken Bereskin, Apple's director of Mac OS X product marketing, said Spotlight has been a couple of years in development -- before Panther -- and incorporates several complex system technologies. Bereskin said the system was inspired by the speedy search engine in iTunes, which instantly returns results as soon as the user starts typing: whether the match is in the song's title, album, genre or artist fields.") und Norbert Heger, der LaunchBar Entwickler zu Wort kommen: "If it's implemented well, Spotlight may become an extremely interesting technology," Heger said. Tony Smith packt bei The Register ein wenig Verschwörungstheorie zum September iMac aus: "No, it all points to a carefully considered strategy designed to whet Mac fans' appetites for whatever's coming in September. Quite apart from the addition of a G5 CPU, speculation has stretched to a completely new enclosure and the revival of the old tablet rumour."

Die vor kurzem erst bekanntgegebene PlugIn Schnittstelle von Mozilla, Opera, Apple, Sun und Macromedia, dürfte in einem Zusammenhang mit Dashboard stehen, worauf Dave Hyatt hinweist: "One reader of my previous entry (in the trackbacks) expressed concern that only Dashboard widget apps could execute native code. Well, we have an answer to that as well. You see, we're working with other browser vendors to extend the plugin API to add scriptability."

AppleInsider hat sich Safari 2.0 (und nein, Safari wird ab 10.4 nicht Safari RSS heißen) vorgenommen: "Since Tiger’s hook is pervasive searching, Apple has also added a bookmarks search to Safari, accessible from the bottom of the Bookmarks manager. Users may search page titles, URLs, domain names or any other information saved within their bookmarks. Sources also noted that Bookmark search is capable of searching a user's recent history, though Apple makes no mention of this potentially handy feature."

AppleInsider berichtet einem frisch aufgetauchten 10.3.5, ein angeblich ein 'signifikantes' Update für X.3, allerdings bisher ohne nähere Angaben. Außerdem sei die alte Airport Karte aus dem Programm genommen worden, im deutschen Apple Store ist sie momentan zumindest noch zu haben.

Apple: Neuer iMac erst im September [Update]

Apple weiß in diesem Jahr wirklich in vielfältiger Weise zu überraschen, so findet sich seit kurzem folgende Nachricht auf der iMac Bestellseite im Apple Store:
"Apple has stopped taking orders for the current iMac as we begin the transition from the current iMac line to an all-new iMac line which will be announced and available in September. We planned to have our next generation iMac ready by the time the inventory of current iMacs runs out in the next few weeks, but our planning was obviously less than perfect. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."
AppleInsider nutzt dies zum kleinen Seitenhieb gegen Think Secret: "The statement also does its part to debunk rumors that Apple has been "laughing" at recent reports and analyst's statements that positioned an iMac G5 introduction around the time of its World Wide Developers Conference." MacRumors hingegen verspricht einen G5 im Mac und 'vertical case redesign', soviel also zu Steve's Keynote Geheimbotschaften iMac - Paris - birthday - Yosemite. Weniger schön wird sich diese Verzögerung wohl in Apple's Q3 (dort laut Apple angeblich nicht, aber die Nachfrage war sowieso schon mau) und Q4 Quartalszahlen niederschlagen. Zumindest herrscht momentan Freude über den Europa-Preis des iMac, aber dazu mehr an passenderer Stelle.

Update:
Zumindest Jupiter Research Analyst Joe Wilcox hält es für einen geschickten Schachzug: "This is a smart marketing move," Wilcox said. "In some ways Apple might be learning how to turn the 'rumor mill' to its advantage. Apple usually doesn't announce that something is coming with this much detail. So how much 'buzz' do you think Apple is going to get out of this little maneuver? A lot I think."
Die Seitenhiebe gehen weiter, Think Secret schlägt zurück: "Last week, we correctly reported that the rumors were off-base, and that the company would not use the conference to roll out a consumer desktop revision. In fact, the new iMacs were delayed all the way to September, the statement shows, confirming reports that the predictions were off the mark." Vermutet wird dort ein Produktionsproblem als Ursache für die Verzögerung.

Mit den Dashboard Widgets spielen

Wer schon gerne mal vorab die Dashboard Widgets/Gadgets ausprobieren möchte, kann diese bei The Veland Show finden:

"What’s even cooler is that I was able to extract the gadgets that came with the WWDC-preview and make them available for you. Right here, right now. On the web." Ausprobieren lassen sich diese idealerweise mit Safari. Allerdings sind nicht alle voll funktionstüchtig, was der Nettigkeit jedoch keinerlei Abbruch tut. (via Kermit the Blog)
Dave Hyatt erklärt derweil noch etwas mehr zu Dashboard: "Just to prove a point that there are many ways to think about this new feature, here's another take on what Dashboard is. From a browser geek's perspective, the Dashboard is a collection of HTML sidebar panels liberated from the browser window and placed anywhere on your screen. The "Web pages as widgets" concept is really just a logical extension of the Web sidebar panel metaphor fused with Expose." Bei Backup Brain sind man darin Ähnlichkeiten zu Hypercard (was mindestens den Schockwellenreiter erfreuen dürfte): "It's about all of us, programmer and non-programmer, scripter and non-scripter, being able to, for the first time, create little useful applications on our own Macs, using simple code and markup (i.e., HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; i.e., not AppleScript) that we probably already know something about, and then being able to share those widgets with anyone who has Tiger."

Der iTMS auf dem Weg zur 100.000.000 [Update: das Kleingedruckte]

Sobald morgen 95 Millionen Lieder im iTunes Music Store verkauft wurden, wird Apple an jeden 100.000sten Lied-Käufer einen Spezial (!?) 20GB iPod vergeben, insgesamt 49 Stück, bis die 100 Millionen eben erreicht sind.

Der Käufer des genau 100.000.000sten Titels darf sich sogar über ein 17" PowerBook, einen 40GB iPod und einen Geschenkgutschein über 10.000 Songs herausragend freuen (und wird im Gegenzug gezwungen, eine eigene Celebrity Playlist zu erstellen). Die 'Dankes'-Aktion ist in allen iTMS Ländern gültig. “As we approach the unprecedented milestone of 100 million legally downloaded songs, we want to thank our customers who have made the iTunes Music Store such a stunning success,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iTunes is pulling even further ahead of its competitors, and it's all due to the wonderful customers we have.”
Nach der Pressemeldungs-Dusche ein kurzer Blick auf die Zahlen:
In den USA bewegt Apple sich weiterhin bei rund 3 Millionen Downloads in der Woche, während Europa bisher knapp 800.000 Titel pro Woche verkauft (insgesamt inzwischen über 1,5 Millionen) und damit hier ebenfalls der unangefochtene Marktführer sein dürfte. Was allerdings dieser Hinweis in der lokalisierten Fassung bedeuten soll, bleibt mir bisher schleierhaft: "Teilnahmeberechtigt sind alle iTunes Music Store Kunden in den USA, Großbritannien, Frankreich und Deutschland. Es ist kein Einkauf erforderlich."

Update:
Danke an dresa für den Hinweis auf das Kleingedruckte, welches inzwischen online ist und die Antwort auf meine verwirrte Frage liefert. So muss nämlich nicht zwingend ein Titel gekauft werden, um an der Aktion teilzunehmen; es reicht eine email an [email protected] durch die iTunes 'Tell a Friend' Möglichkeit und man hat dieselbe Chance auf einen Preis. Noch eine zweite Passage ist anmerkenswert. Ein Gewinner ist verpflichtet eine eidesstattliche Erklärung zu unterschreiben, nach der Apple dessen Namen, Bild, Stimme und biografische Informationen zu Werbezwecken (unentgeltlich) nutzen darf: "By accepting any prize, each winner consents to (i) being interviewed about their interest in music, iTunes, and the iPod and (ii) use of his or her name, likeness and any statements, quotes or testimonials for advertising and publicity purposes without further compensation."

Eric Bangeman schreibt in der Mac.Ars Kolumne über .Mac im Lichte von Gmail etc.: "Storage is relatively inexpensive these days, much cheaper than when iTools was first announced four-and-a-half years ago. It's time for Apple to pass on some of those cost savings to its customers. Give .Mac users 250MB of e-mail space, and another 250MB of iDisk room. No one likes to go through their e-mail folders and iDisks and delete and/or archive stuff. And there's no reason that .Mac should have to do that with their e-mail.

Zwei weitere Installationsberichte von 10.4 Tiger DP

Den ersten liefert AppleInsider (und davon Teil 1): "Overall, sources said that this first developer preview of Tiger was very snappy and responsive, even while running on a G3 processor. However, it should be noted that clean installs of any Mac OS system will tend to run noticeably faster than systems containing hundreds of applications and thousands of files."

Der zweite findet sich bei macosXrumors: "Once Mac OS X has booted, it starts the indexing of all your hard drives, this can take really a long time and it consumes a lot of system resources. It can't be compared to the indexing method of Mac OS 9 thought because, once it has finished the initial indexing, it will index file as they are created."

DELL will Deinen iPod

"A Deal that Rocks": Man kaufe sich einen 15GB Dell DJ für 199$, lade sich eine 100$ Rabatt-Briefvorlage herunter und schicke diese mit dem eigenen (ausrangierten) iPod ein und schon bekommt man den Bizarro iPod zum halben Preis. Weiterhin lernt man dabei, dass Dell offenbar kräftig Bedarf an iPods hat (was nicht weiter verwundert) und selbst ein kaputter iPod noch die Hälfte eines nagelneuen Dell DJ wert ist. Ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, ob das noch in die Kategorie 'lustig' passt, oder direkt unter 'einfach nur dumm' einzuordnen ist.

iMac - Paris - birthday

Eine Lieblingsbeschäftigung der Gerüchteköche bestand schon immer darin, jedes einzelne Wort, ja jede Geste von Steve Jobs aufs genaueste zu untersuchen, auf versteckte Untertöne abzuklappern und letztendlich darin in einem Akt der Erkenntnis die orakelten zukünftigen Macs zu erblicken. So konnten aufmerksame WWDC 2004 Keynote Zuschauer bemerken, dass Steve Jobs bei der Präsentation von Spotlight (ab ca. Minute 45 im Rebroadcast) folgende drei Suchbegriffe hintereinander verwendet: iMac, Paris und birthday. Die unerbittliche Schlussfolgerung lautet: Es wird neue iMacs auf der Mac Expo in Paris im September geben, die zugleich den 20 year anniversary Mac darstellen oder so ähnlich. Bei dem auf 'birthday' folgenden Suchbegriff gab Jobs dann 'Yosemite' ein und verwies damit konsequent auf den Codenamen des Blue&White Power Mac G3. Messerscharf geschlussfolgert werden wir also in Paris einen Geburtstags-iMac G3 präsentiert bekommen.
