iPod+hp: Ads

"These are three ads I found in the September 3 issue of "Entertainment Weekly". Sorry about the weird crops that occasionally appear. It's not exactly easy to scan a two-page ad perfectly." Gefunden auf dieser .mac Homepage (via MacDailyNews).

HP iPod = Apple iPod from HP [Update_3: Die Rückseite]

Der Prototyp des hPod, den Carly Fiorina im Januar durch die Luft schwenkte war jedenfalls HP-bläulich, aber das Wall Street Journal meldete bereits, dass der HP iPod doch weiß und silber werden solle. Auf HPshopping.com findet er sich nun schon, unglaublich kreativ als 'Apple iPod from HP' benannt. Er entspricht 1:1 dem allseits bekannten 4G iPod, ist jedoch angeblich auf der Rückseite mit einem HP Logo versehen (MacRumors schreibt allerdings: "Apple logo laser-etched on the back"). Preise (darüber war bereits im Januar spekuliert worden) und Specs sind ebenfalls identisch, lieferbar ist er ab Mitte September und offiziell nur Windows-tauglich. iPod+hp 20GB für 299$ und iPod+hp 40GB für 399$.

Update:
HP (Digital Music Site) bietet zusätzlich 'printable tattoos' für den iPod, mit dem dieser sich entsprechend verschandelnschönern lässt, eins ist gleich beim Kauf dabei: "The ultra-thin HP Printable Tattoos are easy to apply and remove from the player's exterior, according to the company. They are durable and water-resistant, which helps protect the iPod from scratches. HP said it is working with recording studios to offer consumers access to the latest album art from the newest releases", meldet MacMinute. Zusätzlich soll es eine begleitende Kampagne mit einer Reihe von Fernsehspots geben.

Spekulationsanheizer aus den Specs: "Upgradable firmware enables support for future audio formats" und der DJammer in den HP Labs: "The HP DJammer portable appliance is the next generation of MP3 players. Building on top of current MP3 players, the HP DJammer has the following two additional functionalities: a personal DJ User Interface (UI), and a live digital session with one (or more) similar HP DJammer appliance enabling listeners to create music and digitally mix in real-time together (hence the term jamming)." Eine kleine Anekdote noch zum Nicht-verwenden des HP-Blaus von AP: " The HP-branded music player will not feature HP's signature blue color as initially planned because it found that the clean white look was important to iPod customers, Joshi said." Während noch kein internationaler Auslieferungstermin feststeht, geht allerdings die Spekulationsphase schon fröhlich los, neben den oben erwähnten 'future audio formats' gibt vor allem die prominent platzierte Erwähnung des iPods als Fotospeicherplatz zu denken, so schreibt iPodfun.de: "Weiter ist in der Beschreibung zu lesen “You can use the iPod to store pictures – with its huge capacity, you can say goodbye to expensive flash cards” ohne den bisher erforderlichen Media Reader zu erwähnen, während im selben Abschnitt bei der Aufnahmefunktion direkt zum Belkin Voice Recorder gelinkt wird."

Und alte Fragen bekommen neue Fragezeichen.

Update_3: Interessante Details aus einem Interview das ipodlounge.com mit dem HP Product Manager für den iPod+hp führte: "To that end, HP has demonstrated a new portable, LCD-equipped 4"x6" photo printer, the HP PhotoSmart 375 ($199), which can connect with the iPod via USB for direct digital printing.[…] HP has also introduced HPTunes, software compatible with Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center operating system "which lets iTunes music be played on the Media Center's extended interface," which Mr. Ralph explains was previously not possible.[…] But the differences, including new packaging, manuals, and a poster, are intended to make the iPod even easier for first-time digital music users to enjoy. "The user guide is very Windows-centric," said Mr. Ralph, "so we can talk to the Windows-based consumer."

Der hPod wird wohl doch schon heute im Rahmen einer Pressekonferenz von Carly Fiorina enthüllt, dürfte am frühen Nachmittag über die Bühne gehen.
"The expectation on the iPod is that HP's version will probably outsell Apple's version relatively quickly," Enderle (wer sonst?) said, due to HP's broad distribution at electronics retailers." Meldet Reuters.
"Tomorrow you've got HP doing their consumer electronics launch and the HP iPod launch, and next week there's the introduction of the new iMac," said Shannon Cross, an analyst at Cross Research.[…] "Even if they have issues with availability of chips in the near-term due to IBM, there's remarkable demand," she said. "Obviously, at some point the chip issue is going to be resolved and you'll be left with a good amount of pent-up demand." Ebenfalls Reuters.
Im Rahmen eines Druckcontests vergibt HP zudem massiv Apple Hardware: "15-inch PowerBook G4, Power Mac 5 GHZ (sic!); 20-inch iMac G4 und iPod Mini (via MacMinute).

Die NYT über den iPod/iTunes Shuffle Modus: "When confronted with such elaborate theories, Stan Ng, Apple Computer's director of iPod product marketing, laughed. "The funny thing about it is that it really is random," he said. "When you turn on Shuffle Songs, it creates a randomized list of all the music on your iPod without repeating a song."

Apple drängt wohl nicht nur mit dem iPod selbst an die Unis, sondern: "In an effort to prevent illegal file sharing on campus, Florida State University is on the verge of finalizing a deal with Apple Computer, Inc. -- a deal that would provide free iTunes software to students and allow them to download music for 99 cents per song." Das lässt sich allerdings problemlos auch ohne Uni-Deal haben (via MacMinute).

Mike Wendland erklärt, warum der Sidekick II macfreundlich ist: "You open up your desktop contact list, export it as a text file and then go to a special Web page Danger gives you when you activate your account. Click a button and it downloads that file from your desktop, organizing it and then sending it via a wireless phone connection back to the Sidekick. Very cool. Very user friendly and not platform prejudiced."

Freitägliche Softwareecke [Update]

Ich hätte es beinahe 'SoftOrama' übertitelt, aber das hätte dann wohl zu weit geführt:

"Sticky Windows transforms your windows into tabs when you drag a window towards the edge of your screen. Providing you with a completely clutter-free workspace. By clicking on the tab the user can show and hide the window." Nett, sentimental und nach drei Minuten Test mich nicht völlig überzeugend (kostet irgendwas um die 15EUR).

"teleport is a simple utility to let you use one single mouse and keyboard to control several of your Macs. Simply reach the edge of your screen, and your mouse teleports to your other Mac! The pasteboard can even be synchronized between the computers." Soll fantastisch sein, konnte es immer noch nicht testen, inzwischen in Version pr2.1; Freeware.

FastAndSlow 1.0: "This MenuExtra addition adds the ability to switch the Powerbook/iBook CPU processor performance (in the Energy Saver settings) from the menubar. Actually, it can't use the "automatic" processor performance setting. You can select between "fast" and "slow"." Freeware, 73KB.
Ganz abgesehen von der weiteren Überfrachtung meiner Menüleiste (bisweilen auch Menubar genannt) muss dafür MenuCracker benutzt werden: "Menu cracker is a little tool to reenable the menu extra that Apple closed in Mac OS X 10.2 (code named Jaguar). Using MenuCracker you can use all your 10.1 Menu Extras unmodified." Ich verzichte dankend.

MPlayer 2.0b8r2, mein persönlich favorisierter AllesAbspieler.

Public Beta eines RSS Headline Tickers namens stickler, zum Download muss eine email-Adresse angegeben werden (buuuh), jog war jedenfalls nicht gerade tödlich begeistert: "Es handelt sich um einen Ticker. Mitgeliefert werden drei Skins, die aber für ein 12" Display allesamt zu gross sind."

Update: Da ich -wie erwähnt- teleport leider selbst (immer) noch nicht getestet habe, freue ich mich um so mehr über folgende email, die Uli mir schickte (vielen Dank!) und die ich der Einfachheit halber hier weitestgehend zitiere:

"Wer schon mal zwei Monitore an seinem Rechner hatte, kann sich vorstellen, wie es läuft. In der Systemeinstellung wird die Anordnung der Monitore zueinander vorgenommen (wer rechts, wer linkst steht, ob sie auf gleicher Höhe sind, wenn unterschiedliche Auflösungen benutzt werden), und dann wandert man mit der Maus aus dem einen Monitor raus, und landet auf dem anderen. Eigentlich, als ob zwei Monitore an einem Rechner hängen, nur das eben der eine in wirklichkeit an nem anderen Rechner angeschlossen ist. Das ganze läuft völlig ruckelfrei, ich merke vom Anfassen her nicht, an welchem Rechner die Maus tatsächlich angeschlossen ist. Die Tastatur wandert genauso mit, und auch die Zwischenablage kann auf beiden benutzt werden.

Damit läßt sich dann folgendes praktizieren: auf dem einen Rechner einen Text markieren, apfel-c drücken, mit der Maus auf den anderen Monitor wandern, und dort in einem Dokument mit derselben Tastatur wie eben mit apfel-v einfügen. Was will man mehr?

Für jeden ideal, der zwei Rechner mit jeweils einem Monitor an seinem Platz stehen hat, aber den Schreibtisch nicht mit zwei Tastaturen zumüllen will. Auch wenn man beispielsweise eine Maus mit mehreren Tasten und Scrollrad (funktioniert übrigens auch) hat, kann die auf diese Weise problemlos mit beiden Rechnern benutzt werden, ohne ständig umstöpseln zu müssen."

Ist das der neue iMac G5? [Update_2]

Update_2: Der Vollständigkeit halber und um eventuelle Verwirrung zu vermeiden: Die Bilder sind lediglich ein fein konstruierter Hoax. Es handelt sich um ein 20" LaCie LCD in einer PowerBook Packung (via engadget).

Und natürlich finden sich die typischen schwarzverhüllten Schilder bereits in der Expo Halle:

Does it mean this is a design that's being considered for the next iMac? Doubtful. At least I hope not; it seems rather homely."

Letztendlich sind es wohl die MacGuardians, die den Exklusivbericht zum iMac G5 schon längst abgeliefert haben:

"Der neue iMac (siehe naturgetreue Skizze)sieht den zuletzt vorgestellten Displays täuschend ähnlich, sämtliche Hardware verbirgt sich direkt hinter dem Panel, wodurch dieses geringfügig (an der dicksten Stelle) auf eine Tiefe von 5 cm anwächst."

Das dürfte ein unterhaltsames Wochenende werden.

Rael Dornfest hat eine Übergangslösung zusammengebastelt, mit der sich das Nokia 7610 (welches sehr zu meiner Verärgerung eben nicht von iSync 1.5 unterstützt wird) zumindest halb automatisiert mit den eigenen Adressen befüllen lässt: "So I spent a little time with a couple-three apps and hacked together a pro-tem solution that'll hold me over for long enough to try out the snazzy, thin, 1.2 megapixel-powered 7610."

Gary Allen berichtet konstant weiter aus Osaka: "The front glass doors slide outward to open, and they did several times while I was there--but only about 12-14 inches so a worker could squeeze in and out. I could see some of the typical furniture, computers, etc. Apple's Web site hasn't posted the traditional collection of interior photographs. Apple Store Guru Gary Allen schreibt für Think Secret über den Londoner Store, der nach seinen Quellen am 20. November eröffnet werden soll: "The designs on the facade were restored in 1999, and depict the arms of the City of London, a British Royal Lion holding the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom, the arms of the City of Westminster, the Lion of St. Mark symbolizing the city of Venice, and the arms of the Island of Murano, where the Venetian glass industry is still based. Tony Smith testet Macrovision CDS-300 version 7 beta: "CDS-300 version 7 is scheduled to be released next month. It's still in beta, so Macrovision may well have the Mac OS X issue sorted out by then, if it can figure out how to hide the CD Audio session from the OS. If it doesn't, it may well get Apple's co-operation to tweak the OS in a future update. Macrovision is confident that it will support Apple's FairPlay DRM scheme in a Q4 software update, suggesting that it has reached, or is about to reach, an accord with the Mac maker. If it licenses FairPlay it may well persuade Apple to neuter OS X's CD Audio mounting."

Als ob ein Fehler am Tag nicht genug wäre

Keine ganze Woche fehlt mehr bis zur Keynote der Pariser Apple Expo und selbst wenn diese nur stellvertretend von Phil Schiller gegeben wird, stellen wir uns bereits provisorisch auf ein unterhaltsames Apple-Ereignis ein. Fehler10 startete einst als WWDC Keynote Countdown und brachte seitdem täglich (ja, auch am Wochenende) mindestens eine kuriose Fehlermeldung. Zur Wiederbelebung des Rückwärtszählens und der Überbrückung der noch sommerverlochten nächsten Tage, werden ab heute täglich diverse Fehler aufgefahren, die jeweils für sich thematisch mehr oder weniger sinnvoll zusammengefasste Fehlertage ergeben.
An dieser Stelle ein weiterer großer Dank an all die fleißigen Fehlerzusender, ohne euch wäre dies so nicht möglich geworden (frische Fehler werden selbstredend nach wie vor gerne in unserer Inbox aufgefunden).

Real 'verkaufte' eine Millionen Lieder vergangene Woche

Seit dem Start der für viel Verärgerung/Erheiterung sorgenden 'Freedom of Choice'-Kampagne (und einer gleichzeitigen Promoaktion bei Rhapsody) konnte RealNetworks über eine Millionen Lieder in einer Woche verscherbeln, was natürlich sofort freudig per Pressemitteilung hinausposaunt wurde. Während Apple selbst zum Vollpreis (0.99$) beinahe die dreifache Stückmenge an Musik pro Woche unter die postmaterialistischen Massen bringt, freuen wir uns über jedes weitere bei Real zum Dumpingpreis verkaufte Lied, welches erheblich zum Verlust in den nächsten dortigen Quartalszahlen beitragen wird.
