Joswiak talks iMac G5 [Update]

Diesmal plaudert Greg Joswiak (Hardware Product Marketing Chef bei Apple) im MacCentral Interview aus dem iMac-Nähkästchen, dabei wissenswertes z.B.
über die Drehbarkeit: "And we still have the ability to swivel left and right, but it does it on the entire base; we didn't need to create an arm to do that. There are little skids on the bottom -- this achieves much of the same things [as the G4 iMac] in a different way and, we think, in a better way,"
über die Portabilität: "We all have friends who have PCs, and wherever they first set it up is where it's going to die -- because it's too much trouble to move all the different components, and all the different things they have to do, to move that computer. And that's not the case here,"
über den Audio out Port: "You have standard analog audio out, but it's also one of the combo jacks like we have on the AirPort Express that allows you to do digital out as well, so you can do 5.1 surround sound, for example, from DVD Player." Außerdem weiteres zum PowerBook G5, iMac Verfügbarkeit, wie man die Rückseite abnimmt, den fehlenden FW 800 Anschluss etc.

iPod statt Guinness

Nachdem die Guinness Verkäufe in Irland um 6% sanken, lag der Sündenbock für CEO Paul Walsh nicht sonderlich fern. Die dortigen jungen Männer würden aus einem simplen Grund nicht mehr so häufig die Pubs heimsuchen: "They're often putting their money into electronic stuff such as iPODs," sagte Walsh gegenüber der Financial Times. Zu lesen beim Inquirer (via Engadget).

Wie trägt man seinen iMac G5?

Sicher eine der quälendsten Fragen zum neuen iMac, die nur in der (ab und an) besonders informativen Knowledge Base beantwortet werden kann: "Pick up the iMac G5 by grasping both sides of the computer. Carry it to wherever you wish." Aaah, simpel. Und wie trage ich meinen iPod? (via DasGenie: !Scrap)

Die Innereien des iMac G5

Apple im Gespräch mit europäischen Mobilfunkanbietern - nur über was?

Phil Schiller erwähnte es bereits beiläufig im Interview mit Spiegel Online: Apple sei derzeit im Gespräch mit den europäischen Carriern, man wolle sich allerdings zuerst um den paneuropäischen iTMS Start kümmern. Gegenüber Xonio wurde bestätigt: "...dass Apple bereits mit europäischen Netzbetreibern über die mobile iTunes-Variante verhandelt." Aber über was wird dabei exakt verhandelt? Um 'iTunes Mobile Music' aufs Mobiltelefon zu bekommen bedarf es der Zusammenarbeit mit den Herstellern (siehe Motorola), höchstens könnte es sich im genannten Fall um eine von den Mobilfunkanbietern auf die subventionierten Geräte geklatschte iTunes Version handeln. Oder dreht es sich hier vielmehr um eine mobile Version des iTunes Music Store, der einen direkten Download über das Mobilfunknetz auf ein wie auch immer geartetes Device (welches dafür mit iTunes Mobile Music versehen ist) erlaubt? In diesem Zusammenhang gibt Apple's Stellenanzeige für einen GSM-erfahrenen iPod Ingenieur erheblich mehr zu denken.

Jobs wollte angeblich Sony als iTMS Partner

Steve Jobs trat angeblich im Januar während eines Golf Wettbewerbes an Nobuyuki Idei (Chairman und Group CEO von Sony) heran und bot Sony eine Partnerschaft mit dem iTunes Music Store an, um gemeinsam besser gegen Microsoft aufgestellt zu sein. Derartig äußerten sich zumindest 'Sony Quellen' gegenüber der Zeitung Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun, zitiert bei PCWorld.com (via MacMinute)

Bill Gates: "I guess Steve's kids just listen to Bach and Mozart."

Interview mit Bill Gates zum Start von MSN Music (mehr dazu gabs im heutigen MacOrama) in der Business Week:
"Q: Steve Jobs has said consumers aren't going to watch video on tiny screens. Is he wrong?
A:Yes. Ask kids in the back of a car on a two-hour trip, "Hey, would you like to have your videos there?" My kids would. I guess Steve's kids just listen to Bach and Mozart. But mine, they want to watch Finding Nemo. I don't know who made that, but it's really a neat movie."

Kaum zu überlesen ist gestern der MSN Music Store an den (Vorab-)Start gegangen und Apple beginnt heute gegenzufeuern: "Its biggest problem may be that its downloaded songs can not play on the iPod," said Eddie Cue, Apple's vice president of applications.[…] "The iTunes Music Store is currently selling over 16 million songs per month (a rate of 200 million songs per year)," the company said in a statement. "How many songs will Microsoft's new online music store sell during its first month?" (siehe auch Apple Statement bei MacMinute). Microsoft erklärt zudem, wie sich die eigenen WMA-Lieder auf den iPod zwingen lassen und 'erfindet' die 'New Music Tuesdays'-Mailingliste. Eine kleiner Benutz-Eindruck des MSN-Stores findet sich bei A VC: "Anway, the experience left me a little empty. First, I had to become a .NET Passport user. That sucks. I am not particularly interested in doing that. Second, there was nothing new at the MSN Music Store that I haven't been getting from iTunes for over a year."
Apple hatte vorgestern ein iTunes Partnerprogramm gestartet und dabei bekanntgegeben, dass der iTMS die 125 Millionen Grenze bereits erreichte.

Dan Frakes schimpft über den kläglichen RAM im neuen iMac: "In the long run, insufficient stock RAM only hurts Apple. People whose first, or only, exposure to the Mac platform is using a Mac with too little RAM end up with perceptions that Macs are "slow" or that OS X is "unstable" -- both common traits of computers with too little RAM."

Der iMac G5 wirft die alte Frage nach dem PowerBook G5 natürlich enorm in den Raum: "Cramming a G5 into such a tight space can be seen a step toward a G5 notebook, but Joswiak cautions that it would be tougher to build the current chip into a laptop than it was to get it in an all-in-one. "The challenges of cooling a G5 in a Powerbook design are significantly greater," Joswiak said, noting that a Powerbook is less than half as thick as the new iMac, leaving far less room for cooling tricks." Der iPod-iMac-Bogenschlag soll nicht in eine ganze Kampagne verwandelt werden: "Mr. Boger said there is not a major marketing campaign in the works to go after iPod users using Windows PCs to get them to buy the G5 iMac, but that "we certainly won't turn down their business." Bei TMO.
"It's meant to express a couple of things -- It's not to hide behind the iPod or to downplay the Mac at all," Apple's Phil Schiller, told MacCentral. Leander Kahney erinnert an die Ursprünge des neuen Designs: "Ive initially conceived of an upright flat-panel iMac with processor and drives mounted vertically behind the display (shades of the Twentieth Anniversary Mac). When Ive presented his prototype to Jobs in the autumn of 2000, the boss wasn't impressed. It lacked the excitement and purity of design of the original iMac."
