Mehrere email Adressen mit einem mail.app Account nutzen

Apple's Mailprogramm verblüfft immer wieder mit praktischen und ziemlich undokumentierten Funktionen. So lassen sich problemlos mehrere email (Alias)Adressen mit einem einzigen Account nutzen, besonders angenehm für Domaininhaber oder auch .mac-Kunden, die ihre diversen Aliase nur ungern in zahlreiche Mailbox-Konstrukte packen wollen. Erreichen lässt sich dies sehr unproblematisch, indem bei Einrichtung eines Accounts die Alias-Adressen kommatisch getrennt hintereinander eingegeben werden.

Mail.app ist dabei intelligent genug, um bei einer Antwort die entsprechende Absenderadresse richtig auszuwählen (der ursprüngliche Tipp stammt von Justin French, via 43 Folders, via /blog).

Der iPod als Autogrammkarte

Auch wenn noch unklar ist, ob ab demnächst ein farbbedisplayter iPhoto-iPod neue Funktionalitäten herhält, schon jetzt ist er zu so manchem zu gebrauchen.
Natalie Portman getroffen und kein Blatt Papier dabei? Einfach schnell auf den iPod kritzeln lassen:

"I had nothing else on me when I met Natalie Portman, so I asked her to sign my iPod...she thought it was really cool...but now I have to buy a new iPod." schreibt Eric (via Cult of Mac).

Microsoft: iPod Nutzer plötzlich sehr 'gesetzestreue Konsumenten'

Nachdem Steve Ballmer mit seinen wirren iPod-Äußerungen für erheblichen Unmut sorgte, rudert MS jetzt zurück, zumindest wenn man sich dort persönlich per Kontakt Formular beschwert. Genau das hat Ged Carrol gemacht und dabei folgende Antwort bekommen: "We would like to assure you that when Steve Ballmer implied that most of the music on iPods were stolen, he absolutely did not intend to single out iPod owners for criticism. In fact, given that they have access to their very own - and very popular - online music store, they are likely among the most law-abiding consumers of digital music." (via The Register)

Nachtrag zu S65 und iSync

Zum fscklog Artikel über das Siemens S65 im Zusammenspiel mit OS X und iSync hat Thomas Tempelmann einen sehr lesenswerten Kommentar abgegeben, den ich hier nochmals prominenter platziere möchte:
"Ich habe grad mit einem Siemens-Entwickler ein paar Tests gemacht (mit iSync 1.5 und dem S65):
1. Umlaute im Telefonbuch werden von iSync an S65 falsch übertragen, weil iSync die Umlaute mit UTF-7 kodiert, das Tel aber das Format nicht unterstützt (es kann nur UTF-8).
2. Kalenderdaten und Todo-Einträge werden in beiden Richtungen anscheinend korrekt übertragen, sogar mit Alarmdaten.
3. Es gab beim Sync des Telefonbuchs mehrere Probleme in iSync:
a) Das zuvor auf dem Tel befindliche Telbuch wollte iSync überhaupt nicht akzeptieren und gab auch keinen Grund an, was ihm daran nicht gefiel.
b) Nach dem Löschen des Tel-Buchs auf dem Tel klappte das Übertragen vom Mac an das Tel (mit den erwähnten Umlautfehlern), allerdings haben weitere Sync-Versuche zu einem internen Fehler bei einem bestimmten Eintrag vom Tel geführt - die anderen Einträge wurden jedoch synchronisiert.

Fazit: Das Problem mit den Umlauten könnte von Siemens gefixt werden, indem sie UTF-7-Support einbauen. Die anderen Probleme können aber nur von Apple gelöst werden, und da sieht's generell meines Erachtens schlecht aus, solange Siemens nicht von sich aus an Apple rantritt und Apple auch Interesse daran hat, diesen Aufwand zu betreiben. D.h, das muß dann wohl auf Marketingebene beschlossen werden (und da sehe ich schwarz)."

iMac G5 Support eingedeutscht

Wie IT&W melden sind Apple's deutsche und schweizer iMac Support Seiten auf den neuesten Stand gebracht worden, so dass sich dort nun die entsprechenden Informationen zum iMac G5 finden. Der Troubleshooting Assistant liegt zwar (noch?) nicht lokalisiert vor, dafür aber solche Support-Perlen wie die iMac Trageanleitung, die bereits im O-Ton ziemliche Begeisterung auslösten: "Sind Sie sich nicht sicher, wie Sie Ihren iMac G5 anheben und transportieren sollen? Das ist ganz leicht.[…] Heben Sie den iMac G5 an, indem Sie ihn an beiden Seiten fassen. Tragen Sie ihn dann an den gewünschten Standort."

Steht ein 60 GB iPod mit Farbdisplay kurz bevor? [Update]

Die Gerüchte brodeln seit Ewigkeiten und das nicht von ungefähr. Schon lange ist bekannt, dass die PortalPlayer Platform JPEGS, TV Out und hochauflösende Farbdisplays unterstützen wird. Seit Einführung der vierten Generation im Juli verfügt der 'große' iPod nun ebenfalls über den entsprechenden Chip (PP5020). Nachdem Toshiba vor kurzem erst einen 60GB MP3-Player mit Farbdisplay für Dezember in Aussicht stellte, dürfte das heutige Think Secret Gerücht nicht mehr allzu heftig für Überraschung sorgen. Demnach werden wir in den kommenden ein bis zwei Monaten (Anfang November wäre fürs Vorweihnachtsgeschäft durchaus angebracht) ein neues iPod Spitzenmodell zu sehen bekommen, welches eben über Toshiba's 60GB Platte, ein 2" Farbdisplay, Video Out sowie iPhoto Synchronisationsmöglichkeiten verfügt und 499$ kosten soll. Synchronisation mit iPhoto? Wenn das mal nicht dumpf nach iPhoto für Windows schreit.

Update: Apple lässt die aktuelle 'Wild Postings' iPod Werbung laut AI kommende Woche auslaufen. "A replacement iPod advertisement that will be suitable for use by resellers will be provided "in the very near future." Würde ja bestens passen.

MacOrama für den 07. Oktober 2004

Piper Jaffray Analyst Gene Munster befragte rund 600 Jugendliche (Durchschnittsalter 16,5 Jahre, 60% weiblich, aus neun verschiedenen High Schools in acht verschiedenen Staaten, die allesamt ein überdurchschnittliches Haushaltseinkommen aufweisen) zu MP3 Playern und Online Musik, wenig überraschend beherrscht dort der iPod das Bild: "Munster said 32 percent of the students are looking to purchase a player within the next year, and of those 32 percent, 75 percent expect that they will buy an iPod as compared to a rival player from Rio, Sony, and others." Es wurden keine Fragen zum eingesetzten Betriebssystem gestellt.

Nicht alle Analysten sehen Apples kommende Quartalszahlen überpositiv: "Our continuous checks...of over 50 Apple stores and channel partners lead us to conclude that demand (for the G5 iMac), while solid, is not overwhelming," Ms. Cross wrote.
