Wer die iPod Socks für einen Witz hielt, kann sich jetzt von ihrer Bestellbarkeit im Apple Store selbst überzeugen. Lieferbar ab Anfang Dezember. "Forgive us if we're stating the obvious, but here's how it works: Just slide your iPod into the sock to keep it safe and warm. Slide it out to dock or change playlists. It's as easy as... putting on a pair of socks." 'Stating the obvious' wird offenbar zu einer Apple-Texter-Lieblingsbeschäftigung.

Nach längerer Zeit mal wieder was neues von Gmail. Slashdot hat neue Funktionen entdeckt: "Gmail has recently added POP3 services to their free email accounts. This would allow someone to use gmail without ever seeing any of their advertisements. They are also providing SMTP, both POP3 and SMTP are forcing the use of SSL/TLS. Very interesting...now where's IMAP and what's the catch? It's being phased in, though, so not every gmail account yet has POP access." AppleInsider erzählt von einer kommenden Automator Website, eine nicht allzu spektakuläre Enthüllung an und für sich: "Similar to Apple's iCal Web site, sources expect the Automator site to include helpful user tips and a section where users can submit or share their Automator creations." 10.4 soll möglicherweise früher kommen als erwartet (sprich Anfang 2005), was allerdings gänzlich unbestätigt ist.

iPod bleibt vorerst eine geschlossene Plattform

Verschiedene Untergangsszenarien heraufbeschwörende Rufe nach einer Öffnung des iPods sind regelmäßig zu (über)hören. Dabei fordern die einen, den iPod WMA-kompatibel zu machen (was Hardwareseitig problemlos möglich sein dürfte). Andere sehen nur dagegen nur in der Lizenzierung von Fairplay eine Überlebenschance für iPod/Apple. Und wieder andere halten den weiteren Erfolg des iPod nur mit einer softwareseitigen Öffnung als gewährleistet. Apple selbst gibt sich bisher allerdings ver-/geschlossen, die letzten Marktanteilszahlen geben dieser Strategie (zumindest) momentan recht.

Danika Cleary, the head of worldwide iPod product marketing, told me in London last week that the debate has surfaced repeatedly within Apple. "But our stance is that right now [the iPod is] very simple and it works the same for everyone," she says. "We have decided to keep it closed. And basic." Why? "Essentially, it's a music player," she says. "We don't want to spoil the experience."

MacCentral: "The Digital Video Broadcasting Steering Board (DVB) has approved a revision to its implementation guidelines for audio and video codecs over a broadcast Transport Stream. The revision includes two technologies supported by Apple Computer Inc., H.264 or Advanced Video Codec (AVC) and High Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) audio codecs.[...] "AVC is clearly the chosen direction, which comes as no surprise to me because interoperability across any industry is important," said Casanova. "Any proprietary technology would naturally get shutout where interoperability and openness is required. Problem: Wer bei in diversen Ordnern verschachtelten Dateien gerne den zahlenmäßigen Überblick behält, stößt im Finder schnell an seine Grenzen. Natürlich lässt sich prinzipiell der Ordner mit den enthaltenen Dateien in der Listenansicht komplett auswählen, via Alt+Rechtspfeil in allen Ordnern und Unterordnern ausklappen und dann per Apfel+A erneut komplett auswählen. Das ist allerdings nicht nur entsprechend mühsam, sondern es werden überflüssigerweise die enthaltenen Ordner mitgezählt, was oft nicht allzu sinnvoll ist.

Lösung: Einfach einen beliebigen Ordner auf das Droplet ziehen und es wird die Anzahl der Dateien in diesem Ordner inklusive der Dateien in dessen Unterordnern angezeigt. Die Unterordner selbst werden dabei nicht mitgezählt.
Alternativ lässt sich CountEverest per Doppelklick starten, der zu zählende Ordner kann dann ausgewählt werden.

Amazon's UK site has some of them, but Delicious Library does not query that site. Support for automatically detecting a product's region of origin and then intelligently selecting the best oracle is planned for a future free upgrade. It will be a welcome addition."
