Regent Street - London, Freitag [Update]

Die Nacht zum Freitag dürfte nicht allzu gemütlich ausgefallen sein:

The first overnight was cold, but not unbearable. My feet were really the only part of me that turned out to be really cold that it was uncomfortable. If you haven’t hung around Regent St. in the wee hours of the night and morning, you would be surprised how loud and bright it is. I was being woke up a lot during the night but managed to get in a good 5 hours of sleep or so. Still wondering how many people I heard smirk and snicker as they passed, but luckily for me I was all concealed under a heap of tarp.

Nach Verdopplung der Xserve Verkäufe innerhalb eines Jahres sprach eWeek mit Apples 'director of server hardware' Alex Grossmann: "We start with the marketing or other department in a corporation and move up from there," Grossman said. He noted that most large companies, even if they run their infrastructure on Unix and business desktops on Windows, use some Macintoshes for file serving or mail serving. He said that the "edge server" market, which he defined as all servers costing under $25,000, is booming, and said that the Xserve has a high profile in that categroy."

Weiteres zur Firefox-Euphorie von Safarinutzern, heute von TidBITS-Autor Glenn Fleishman aus seinem Weblog. Trotz der Verbesserungen durch das Betriebssystemupdate beeindrucke ihn Safari nicht und den Beachball sehe er trotz aller Tricks wie den Verzicht auf Favicons viel zu häufig. Seit er Firefox im Alltagsbetrieb auf seinen Rechnern nutze, wachse seine Begeisterung gegenüber dem Testbetrieb sogar noch. "The rendering is fast and no spinning rainbows. It's multi-threading (...) means that it can render in one window while I switch to another." Auch die Kennwortverwaltung sei Safari überlegen. Fleishman nennt sich seit heute einen Switcher. "(jpf)

SPON in gewohnten Bahnen und mit unglaublich lustig kreativer Überschrift ('Apfel und Birne') über die Apple Fanatiker: "Apple-User sind notorisch markentreu und begeistert von den Produkten "ihrer" Firma. IT-Redakteure fürchten sie als E-Mail-Schreiber: Auf jede bloße Erwähnung eines Windows-Sicherheitsproblems schreiben sie Leserbriefe der Kategorie "Das Problem hab' ich nicht, ich habe Apple". Tätig werden sie auch bei jeder Nichterwähnung ihrer Firma, tätlich bei jeder auch nur ansatzweise negativen." Der Redakteur des 'Artikels' fürchtet diese offenbar so sehr, dass er lieber seinen Namen außen vor gelassen hat. (Danke, me!)

Nachdem Singapurs Verteidigungsministerium vorigen Monat mit 20.000 PCs von Windows auf Open Source migrierte und weitere asiatische Länder mit einem Wechsel liebäugen, fand es Microsoftchef Steve Ballmer laut Yahoo News offensichtlich mal wieder an der Zeit, lozupoltern. Linux verletze 228 Patente, behauptete er auf einer Konferenz in Asien. Aber das bliebe nicht ohne Konsequenzen: "Someday, for all countries that are entering the WTO (World Trade Organization), somebody will come and look for money owing to the rights for that intellectual property." It doesn’t matter what you tell the application to do in the preferences, it gets ignored due to the formatting style of the messages themselves. Essentially the message text is rendered really tiny. Apple Stores für Europa [Update_2]

Im Rahmen einer 'special preview' zur Eröffnung des Apple Store London am kommenden Samstag verkündete Apples Retail Chef Ron Johnson zwei weitere UK Läden (soweit bereits bekannt) und verriet, dass Apple außerdem an zusätzlichen europäischen Retail Stores arbeite, allerdings ohne Details preiszugeben. "We didn't come here just to open in the UK," zitiert ihn Reuters.
Meine Planung am Samstag selbst aus London zu berichten ist leider gescheitert, dafür dürfte ich Vor-Ort-Bilder von einem freundlichen fscklog-Leser geschickt bekommen. Gary Allen ist zudem in London und wird sicher mit gewohnt breiter Berichterstattung glänzen. Erste Storeeinblicke finden sich bereits bei Macworld UK und TMO.

Update: Ein wenig Zahlenspielerei bei CNET:

Apple's 99th store--with its largest single retail space to date--takes up two floors in the heart of London's West End, with 15 cash registers, a 64-seat theater and 138 employees who speak 24 languages. There will also be devices for consumers to play with in the store, and those will be available in great numbers, as well: 60 Macs and 77 iPods, including the most recent additions, the iPod Photo and the U2 iPod, will be available for use in the store.

MacOrama für den 18. November 2004 [Update]

Update: In verschiedenen Firefox- und Macintosh-Foren ist eine hitzige Debatte um einen Bock entbrannt, den die deutschen Übersetzer des Firefox geschossen haben. Wer in der lokalisierten Version per Suchfeld eBay Deutschland ansteuert, wird zunächst auf einen schweizer Server umgeleitet, wo die Nutzung dieses Suchfeldes ausgewertet wird. Erst nachdem sich irritierte User Luft gemacht hatten, sah man sich seitens Firefox zu einer Stellungnahme genötigt. Glaubt man Abdulkadir Topal, Kopf der hiesigen Lokalisierer, stehen diese Daten allein eBay zur Verfügung. Nach seiner Aussage bei MTN ist offenbar dieses Verfahren auch bei anderen Suchmaschinen vorgesehen. So zerstört man den Vertrauensvorsprung von Open Source-Software und setzt leichtfertig die Chancen des Firefox gegen den IE aufs Spiel.

Technische Abhilfe schafft eine Änderung der Zeile action="http://www.webtip.ch/cgi-bin/mozilla/tracker_qry_de.pl" im eBay-Such-Plug-In ebay.src durch action="http://search.ebay.de/search/search.dll". Das Plug-in befindet sich innerhalb des Firefoxprogrammordners: Firefox>Contents>MacOS>searchplugins. Die Änderung ist mit TextEdit, Apples migeliefertem Texteditor leicht möglich. (jpf)

A survey of Dock substitutes and other launch utilities: ArsTechnica hat einen umfassenden Überblick und Test von Programmen für Leute veröffentlicht, die das Dock hassen und ersetzen müssen. Sieger des Vergleichs: QuickSilver. Wer nur ein wenig die Funktionsvielfalt des Docks auffrischen will, für den gibt es ebenfalls Hinweise: "To wrap up, if you like the OS X Dock and you're looking for multiple of the same, check out Dock-It. If you want multiple docks, on steroids and with some extras tossed in, download DragThing. If you'd like a quirkier, can-do-more version of the OS X Dock, take a look at DropDrawers. Babes in Toyland: Die Meldung des New Yorker CITY Magazine über Apples SoHo Store als "latest place to see and be seen" hatten wir gerade erst im MacOrama. Nun macht die Story die Runde und wird sogar besser. Auch die New York Post schreibt über den derzeit angesagtesten Hotspot für Singles. Dafür sorgt die Lage des Stores im Szenebezirk SoHo mit vier Modelagenturen um die Ecke. Nicht nur kabellos online gehen lockt das Publikum, sondern auch die vielen attraktiven Leute. So werden nicht nur neue Geräte und E-Mails, sondern auch Leute gecheckt. Das Risiko eines Reinfalls ist überschaubar: "If you talk to a guy in the Apple Store, you already know he's going to be modern and up-to-date and sober. The software - the Digital Media Framework - has been developed in cooperation with Microsoft competitors, Apple, Adobe and Cisco. HP zufrieden mit Verkaufsstart des HP iPod

TMO sprach mit HP Chefin Fiorina über den Apple iPod from HP:

"(The launch of the iPod) is going extremely well," she said. "We continue to believe this is going to be a strong product for us."

Keine Zahlen wurden dabei genannt. Apple gab bei den letzten eigenen Quartalszahlen bekannt, dass 6% der zwei Millionen verkauften iPods auch das HP Logo trugen (sprich rund 120.000 Stück in den ersten zwei Wochen nach Verkaufsstart).

Das Wasser beginnt sich zu kräuseln, die Welle der Safari-/Firefox-Vergleiche rollt an. Nach Erscheinen der FF 1.0-Version hat Leander Kahney einen ersten Eindruck des New Yorker Mac Support-Technikers Damien Barrett ausgegraben. Dieser zeigt sich in seinem Weblog Mr Barrett völlig begeistert von der G5-optimierten Firefox-Variante und zieht sie Safari vor. "It's not that Safari is a bad browser. Safari is quite a good browser and I'll keep it in my dock. But Firefox is faster, cleaner, more extensible, and user-friendly than Safari. Perhaps Safari v2.0 will win me back with its RSS feeds and other features, but that's not until Tiger, which is still a good six months away." (jpf)

'iPod-Design ist mega-in'

Vielleicht wäre ein eigenes Blog über erschreckende Auswirkungen des iPods als Massenphänomen durchaus angebracht. Express.de schreibt:

In kürzester Zeit hat es der schlichte, weiße Knirps aber auch zur Stil-Ikone geschafft: Das iPod-Design ist mega-in, inzwischen gibt es Kaffeemaschinen, Tragetaschen und sogar Autos im Design des Sound-Wunders.

Gänzlich Schmerzbefreite können sich noch die dortige Galerie mit den Kaffeemaschinen und Wasserkochern im iPod Design antun. Und wer dann noch Kraft aufweist darf sich den 'futuristischen Designer-iPods' widmen:

Was Studenten so brauchen (iPod, klar)

Für Studenten muss natürlich alles günstig sein ('Notebooks unter 400 EUR'), aber ein iPod darf laut ebay dabei nicht fehlen. Übrigens die einzige auf dem Bild vertretene Marke (naja, neben dem Billy-Regal natürlich, Danke Matthias!) und dazu noch ziemlich prominent platziert. Der Link führt tatsächlich zu einer Suche nach iPods, nicht etwa nach MP3-Playern im Allgemeinen. (Danke, Markus!)
