Nur mit langen Haaren? Wer weiß. Aber nun zu einer anderen messianischen Angelegenheit: Frohe Weihnachten an die gesammelte Leserschaft. Die nächsten Tage über dürfte es auch im fscklog ruhig werden, wer derweil fröhliche Unterhaltung sucht, dem sei das Archiv von Fehler10 ans Herz gelegt (und den Weihnachtscartoon bei IT&W sollte man sich ebenfalls nicht entgehen lassen).

Neuer Hardwarechef bei Apple soll Ex-Umax Peter Mehring werden, soweit die Gerüchte Ende November. Offizielle Bestätigung fehlt bisher, AppleInsider will aus zuverlässigen Quellen erfahren haben, dass es tatsächlich so ist und Mehrings voriger Arbeitgeber macht ebenfalls keinen Hehl daraus: "Peter was in charge of both hardware and software engineering and of course did a great job here at Echelon," the company said. "We're sorry to see him go, but Apple's a great company and the job he's taking is a great challenge."

Außerdem auf der Patentantragsliste: Ein Schutz für stürzende iPods (bzw. deren Festplatten). "The portable-computing device protects its disk drive by monitoring for such accelerations and operating to avoid usage of the disk drive during periods of acceleration." IBM hat ein sehr ähnliches Konzept ('Airbag für die Festplatte') vor einem Jahr in den ThinkPads vorgestellt.

apple.com bleibt weiterhin bestens besucht, aber Dell konnte in der zweiten Dezemberwoche kräftig aufholen: "In the week ending Dec. 12, compared with a month earlier, the number of unique visitors to Apple’s site declined from 4.9 million to 4.6 million. Meanwhile, Dell climbed from 2.7 million unique visitors in November to 4.1 million in the most recent period." berichtet InternetRetailer.com.

MacBidouille berichtet, dass im Rahmen einer AppleCare Umstrukturierung möglicherweise Apples holländisches Reparaturcenter für i/PowerBooks geschlossen werden soll. "Apple will instruct customers in Europe to contact local Apple Authorized Service Providers and Self-Servicing Customers for all repairs of portable computers and displays."

MacJournal wird kommerzialisiert. Version 2.6 wird die letzte kostenlose Variante bleiben, ab der im Januar erscheinenden Version 3.0 soll das Programm von Mariner Software vermarktet werden, Preis bisher unbekannt. "It wasn't an easy decision because I like how things work right now and I could easily go on as before, but I think MacJournal deserves more. It has evolved into a very capable application and it is only getting better. I'm confident this will be a positive move for MacJournal and will ensure it's survival for years to come." schreibt Entwickler Dan Schimpf.

Michael Gartenberg mit einer etwas kurzgegriffenen Analyse des iPod Erfolges bei Engadget: "It was first, however, to factor in three areas that were of most importance to consumers - battery life, form factor and connectivity back to a PC (in terms of sync as well as support for MP3s natively). Karl Lagerfeld hat inzwischen von 40 auf 70 iPods aufgestockt, wie der Telegraph zu berichten weiß: "His idea of relaxation, a word he seems to dislike, is to lie in his bath listening to his iPod. One of his 70 iPods, that is. "I have some white ones but lots of metallic pinks, blues. I have had every single CD I have downloaded. I enjoy gadgets." Isn't 70 rather excessive? "If I like something I like to have a lot of it," he says dismissively. "Eccentric? Perhaps I am. But then I know only how I am, not how others are. I never compare, I never compete." Die Macwelt hat einen entflammten PowerBook Akku in Deutschland aufgetan und den entsprechenden Artikel inzwischen auch entpremiumt: "Plötzlich ohne jede Vorwarnung schießen Flammen aus der linken Seite des Powerbooks. Erschrocken fährt Peter hoch, Rauch steigt auf und Flammen züngeln – kein Zweifel, das Powerbook brennt. Geistesgegenwärtig wirft Peter eine Decke über das Gerät um die Flammen zu ersticken, da ertönt ein Knall. Eine der mit bis zu acht Bar unter Druck stehenden Akkuzellen ist durchgeschmort und explodiert. Nun reicht es Peter – er ruft die Feuerwehr." Wer seinen 15" PowerBook Akku tatsächlich noch immer nicht überprüft hat, sollte das so langsam mal schleunigst nachholen (Danke, ix!).

CNET über den kommenden G5: "Servers using Power4 and Power5 chips require additional hardware called a management console to manage partitions, Freund said. With the next-generation PowerPC 970, IBM plans to run that hardware management console instead as software in a separate partition, he said. Freund declined to comment on when in 2005 the chip is scheduled to arrive but said it's "pretty late in the design cycle now." Apple plans to use it, he added."

Seagate ist mit seiner 1" 5GB Festplatte im Gerüchtegespräch um den iPod mini Nachfolger. Nach einem Investor's Business Daily Artikel liefert Seagate bereits an Apple: "Signs of growth abound. Seagate says it sold 400,000 of the one-inch-diameter hard drives used in Apple Computer's iPods and other digital music players last quarter. This quarter, it expects to sell 1.3 million. It remains an Apple iPod drive supplier, as is Hitachi and Toshiba."

Rogue Amoeba hatte bereits im Sommer eine halbwegs brauchbare Lösung um Ton über eine AirPort Express zu transportieren ohne dabei auf iTunes zurückzugreifen. Anfang 2005 soll mit Slipstream ein Programm folgen, welches diese Möglichkeit perfektioniert. Man darf gespannt sein, ob sämtliche Verzögerungen damit wirklich beseitigt sind und es möglich wird, DVDs und Spiele über die AirPort Express zu hören.

MacFixIt mit Mini-Tutorial zu FireWireWirren: "Occassionally, however, conflicts between FireWire-connected devices arise and can result in a variety of issues including DV cameras dropping frames, FireWire drives not mounting, and erratic behavior from the iPod (disappearing from iTunes, etc.). In the midst of these issues, you might also experience "buffer underrun" errors when trying to burn CDs or DVDs with FireWire-connected recorders."

Wall Street Journal über die 'Rückkehr' des Mac: "The difference between then and now is that the combination of Windows' security woes and greater familiarity with Apple products, a combination we think will be what Apple needs to unlock that market. It's happening slowly right now, but it's happening, and it'll gain momentum in the months to come. Bei Credit Suisse First Boston ist man überzeugt, dass Apple die Quartalserwartungen bei weitem übertreffen dürfte und prognostiziert 3,3 Milliarden Dollar Umsatz bei 0,55$ Gewinn pro Aktie. TMO mit den Details: "Mr. Semple predicted Apple will ship 4.8 million iPods in its fiscal first quarter and will end up with "a substantial backlog, mostly in international locales." He said he believed many predictions of iPod sales had been "overly aggressive" and that a shortage of 1.8-inch hard drives manufactured by Toshiba is to blame. He said he believed hard drive shortages would be a thing of the past by March of 2005."

Hicksdesign theme for Omniweb 5: "This has been a personal project since February, and even though its not finished, I feel the need to get something out as a starting point. The thing is, there are so many flippin’ icons in Omniweb, and while I don’t want to change them all, I do want to change a lot of them. Seit Wochen hat das (einzig hörenswerte) berlin-brandenburgische Radio1 seine Hörer befragt: "Wann hatten Sie das letzte Mal gute Musik?". Wunderbare persönliche und emotionale statements wurden gesammelt, was ein bestimmtes Lied einem Hörer bedeutet. Zu gewinnen gab es reihenweise iPods. Zwischen dem 25.12., 5 Uhr und dem 31.12., 19 Uhr werden nun "2004 Songs für 2005" ausgestrahlt, ebenfalls mit Gewinnmöglichkeiten für iPods und iPod minis. Radio1 ist weltweit per Stream empfangbar, aber an dem RealAudio-Format muss der RBB noch was tun. (jpf)

Apple verklagt drei ADC Mitglieder [Update_3]

Wie Reuters berichtet, verklagte Apple drei ADC Mitglieder, die zwei verschiedene Tiger Builds über eine Seite mit BitTorrent-Links verteilten. Nachdem Apple gerade erst aufgrund der breit dargelegten Asteroid Box gegen Unbekannt klagte, ist dies die zweite Klage mit der Apple rigoros versucht, undichte Stellen bei Mitarbeitern und Entwicklern zu stopfen und potenzielle Plaudertaschen abzuschrecken.

"Apple's future operating results and financial condition are substantially dependent on its ability to continue to develop improvements to the Mac OS and related software applications in order to maintain perceived design and functional advantages over competing platforms," the company said in its civil complaint, filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, San Jose.

Engadget hat sich Sonys PlayStation Portable ausführlich vorgenommen und kommt zum obligatorischen iPod Vergleich (nachdem die eigenen 'MP3'-Player gescheitert sind, hofft man bei Sony via PSP dem iPod beizukommen): "Apple’s iPod photo handily beats the PSP in terms of the MP3 interface, ease of use, playlist creation, and storage space." Bei einem Preis von um die 200 EUR wird die PSP aber sich auch unter den iPod Besitzern zahlreiche Freunde finden. MacBidouille hat einen netten Bericht über die Verbindungsmöglichkeiten von PSP und Mac. Als USB Massenspeicher lässt sich die PSP demnach recht problemlos nutzen, die WiFi-Fähigkeiten scheinen ebenfalls gut ausgeprägt, fehlen nur noch Browser und Mailprogramm zur Glückseligkeit.

Wer es bisher überlesen hat: Apples Klage gegen Unbekannt hatte nicht mit dem Flash iPod zu tun, wie weithin zu lesen war, sondern mit der Asteroid Audiobox (und zwar zum Glück, ein Quasi-Bestätigung des bisher vorgemurmelten displaylosen Flash iPods hätte mich doch ein ganz klein wenig schockiert).

Das bereits zwei Mal verlängerte Logic Board Replacement Program für iBooks ist weiter ausgedehnt worden und gilt nun bis zum 18. März 2005. Das Austauschprogramm war im Januar aufgelegt worden, um zwischen Mai 2001 und Oktober 2003 hergestellte iBooks zu reparieren, wenn sie folgende Symptome zeigen: Ungleichmäßige oder verzerrte Videodarstellung; Anzeige unerwarteter Linien auf dem Bildschirm; Teilweise unterbrochene Videodarstellung; Eingefrorene Videodarstellung oder Computer wird mit leerem Bildschirm gestartet.

Schlechtester Desktop PC des Jahres ist der eMac. Das meint zumindest das PC Magazine: "For Apple, the entry-level eMac really does represent Think Different. That's because for a company that prides itself on quality, this computer is different. As in bad. On the plus side, it's stylish. On the downside, it's slow, underpowered, and pathetic." Und nein, dort ist man für gewöhnlich nicht sonderlich Mac-feindlich, sowohl Panther wie iMac G5 erhielten vor kurzem erst jeweils fünf von fünf möglichen Sternen verliehen.

Improved reliability of WDS networks when using WPA security. If you had a WDS network secured by WDS and then removed any of the WDS nodes, this could cause a memory leak resulting in the need to reboot your WDS network nodes.
Resolved an issue with inbound passive FTP to a port-mapped computer on the network.
Resolved an issue with certain printers which were no longer recognized by the base station after the 6.1 firmware update was installed. With the 6.1.1 firmware these printers are again recognized by the base station.

iPod mini? Nein, i-Pocket

Die seltsame Mischung aus iPod mini und den Bedienelementen der dritten iPod Generation ist so schamlos, dass es schon fast wieder lustig ist:

Aboss i-Pocket, Preis und Kapazität nicht bekannt. Laut Sherlock-Übersetzung erhältlich in "Golden color, powder blue color, pink, powder green, silver." (via Engadget mit der schönen Headline: The ABOSS i-Pocket says, “Apple, please sue us!”)

Update: Nach iTunes erhebt Apple nun allerhand Kundendaten zum iPod in einer erneuten Umfrage. iPod-news.de hat die Details: "In einer Auflistung soll die Wichtigkeit der Features des MP3-Players von Playlisten über Bedienungskomfort, Gestaltung Design, Kompatibilität mit Jukebox-Software, Größe des Gerätes, Kompatibilität mit Anbietern von Online-Digital-Musik-Diensten, Tonqualität, bis zur Erhältlichkeit von Zubehör und natürlich dem Preis bewertet werden und wie zufrieden man mit diesen Features bei seinem iPod ist."

Wie Mac Rumors auf Seite 2 meldet, gibt es angeblich bereits einen Hersteller für den weithin kolportierten Flash iPod: "Taiwanese newspaper Apple Daily reported yesterday that ASUSTeK Computer Inc. has received an order to manufacture about 5 million iPods based on flash memory for delivery next year, with the deliveries beginning in the first quarter of 2005. The FOB (wholesale export) price is said to be $65." Welche Kapazität zu diesem Preis kommt, wurde leider nicht genannt.

Jupiter Research Analyst Joe Wilcox über den iPod als Plattform: "As for the licensing FUD, I hear vendors talk about how Microsoft's Windows Media Audio is more open and offers consumers more choice. OH PLEASE! Don't make me laugh. The title of last week's report from colleague Michael Gartenberg says it all; "Digital Music: MP3 Remains the File Format of Choice for Consumers." The format consumers care most about is MP3, which Apple fully supports in both iTunes and iPod. By comparison, Microsoft's Windows Media Player 10 will not rip acceptable-quality MP3s without an encoder from another vendor."

Sven-S. Porst war auf Apples Berliner Tiger Entwicklerveranstaltung: "Before lunch, we were given a three hour overview of the new stuff. Nothing new there. However, it became clear that the guys who did the presentations (called Phil and Etienne from the UK and France, IIRC) were different from Steve Jobs or the Apple web site in two respects. Firstly, they wouldn’t present as flawlessly and most notably have quite ugly slides with too little contrast and partly small fonts. Secondly, they were much cooler and relaxed than any of the other PR work I’ve seen. Heck, they’d actually admit that there are things in previous or current versions of OSX that suck(ed)."
