Im elbewerk gibt es einen ausführlicheren Überblick der auf dem 21C3 vorgetragenen Lücken in OS X (siehe auch MacOrama von gestern): "Ganz und gar nicht lecker ist jedoch, dass es Laub gelungen sein soll, Programm-Code zur Laufzeit in beliebige Programme einzuschleusen - ohne Buffer-Overflow etc. Die Objective-C Runtime Library lässt den Austausch von ganzen Methoden zu, auch wenn der Source Code nicht bekannt ist. Davon betroffen sind sämtlich OS X Programme, z. B. der Finder oder Safari. Erschreckend an dieser »Mach Injection« ist, dass sie vollständig ohne Root-Rechte auskommt und ohne Kennworteingabe in der Benutzerumgebung funktioniert." eWeek listet warum gerade Apple als Löser des 'Wohnzimmerrästels' tauglich wäre: "Yet Apple clearly has understood one important (though often overlooked) lesson: True revolutions start at the fringe, not at the center. Before becoming a vast consumer hit, the iPod was the perfect stylish, niche product." Vielleicht passt da ein kopfloser Mac wirklich bestens ins Konzept.

Philip Torrone weist nochmal auf die angeblich recht hochqualitative Aufnahmemöglichkeit via Linux auf dem iPod hin: "apple cripples recording on an ipod so belkin and griffin then have to sell us add-on devices for over $50 that can only record at 8khz, which is all pretty shitty. apparently (the rumor is) apple does this so people don’t use their ipods to record stuff they think we shouldn’t, like concerts, whatever."

Am 12. Januar (einen Tag nach der Keynote) gibts Apples Q1 2005 Zahlen, die diesmal besonders spannend werden dürften (wenn Steve nicht schon alles vorher verrät), der Conference Call folgt in gewohnter Weise: "Apple’s conference call webcast discussing Q1 - 2005 financial results will begin at 2pm PT/5pm ET on Wednesday, January 12, 2005." Bei uns also um 23 Uhr, ausführliche Berichterstattung wie gewohnt im fscklog.

John Gruber gibt Tipps zum problembefreiten OS X Softwareupdateprozess, denen man nur zustimmen kann. Zusätzlich sollte vor jedem Update auf jeden Fall Festplatte überprüft/repariert und die Rechte repariert werden (und letzteres erneut nach dem Update).

Steve Jobs Gehalt macht mal wieder die Runde, TMO erklärt was sonst gerne weggelassen wird: "Many people have held up Mr. Jobs as the poster child for such corporate governance excess based on his stock grant, though the full picture is slightly different. While Mr. Jobs did receive that massive grant, and he also was given a jet worth some $84 million, this is the only compensation Mr. Jobs has received from Apple since returning to the helm of the company in 1997. In addition, Mr. Jobs' grant vests over three years, meaning that they do not become fully his until March of 2006. That moves his total compensation for 10 years of service to Apple to approximately $158.8 million, or $15.9 million per year."

Skype 0.4 (0.13.0.5) ist da und bringt kleine neuheiten mit: "a small semi-transparent window to quickly answer incoming calls, linked URL's in IM, emoticons in IM, styled and colored text in IM, change/improvement, main menu re-organized and context-sensitive validation further improved." Dazu passend 'Skype on Mac OS X: A Hands-On Approach' im MacDevCenter: "My goal today is to introduce you to the wonders of Skype and show you how to integrate it in your routine but also to point out its limits."

The Return of the Pizzaschachtel-Mac? (sowie Apple iPod-Lautsprecher und iLife '05 Gerüchte)

Wird er wirklich Wahrheit, der immer wieder gemunkelte 'kopflose' iMac? Geht es nach Think Secrets hochgradig vertrauenswürdigen Quellen (und sie sind es bisher ja durchaus gewesen), dürften wir vermutlich zur Macworld Keynote einen monitorlosen iMac G4 im Pizzaschachtel (Xserve) Format zu sehen bekommen.
Einen 1,25 GHz G4 soll dieser mitbringen, ebenso wie 256MB RAM, 2x USB 2.0, 1x Firewire 400, 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet, Modem, AirPort Extreme-Kartenmöglichkeit, DVI und VGA (vermutlich via Adapter), 'low end' Grafikkarte, 40 bis 80GB Festplatte, optionales Superdrive und ein spezielles iLife-Paket (ohne iDVD), alles zusammen für 499$ (unter 600$ sagt AI). Für Strom wäre über ein i/PowerBook-ähnliches Netzteil gesorgt. Der mit dem Codenamen Q88 versehene Mac wird angeblich bereits produziert und soll im ersten Quartal 2005 verfügbar sein und in erster Linie an switchwillige iPod-Windows-Kunden vermarktet werden.
Tony Smith erinnert in diesem Zusammenhang an die aus Analystenkreisen stammenden Gerüchte um einen 'entertainment server' von Apple:

A Mac sold without a display would make a good candidate for connection to a TV, particularly if it comes in a slim, DVD player-style casing. Apple is expected to promote the new machine more for its software and functionality than performance. What if it's got media streaming via Wi-Fi and TiVo-like PVR features? All for half the price of a Media Center PC - and with Apple's stylish, more living room-friendly looks...

Außerdem gerüchtet: iPod Lautsprecher von Apple höchstpersönlich, iLife 05 und Keynote 2 natürlich, sowie ein neues Programm mit dem Codenamen 'Sugar', das bisher in seinem Zweck noch unbekannt ist. Sollte dies alles in Kombination mit mobiler iTunes Version, iPod-Neuigkeiten und wie auch immer gearteten PowerBooks zusammenfallen, darf man sich schon jetzt auf eine mehr als außergewöhnliche Keynote freuen (sowie auf einen Stream hoffen).

Auch Piper Jaffrays Gene Munster konnte sich eine Vorhersage zur anstehenden Macworld Keynote nicht verkneifen, wie TMO berichtet: "Listing a bumped iPod mini, a flash-based iPod, and an iTunes-capable cell phone from Motorola as "likely" products to be announced, Mr. Munster dismisses a G5 PowerBook and 80GB iPod as "unlikely." Zu diesen Erkenntnissen muss man allerdings kaum Analyst sein.

Eine weitere Zeitung berichtet von Asustek als iPod Zulieferer: "[...]has secured an order from Apple Computer Inc for its iPod mini music player, the Economic Daily News reported, without naming a source. With the flash memory-based device, Apple Computer is apparently seeking to make further forays into the Asian Pacific market, it said."

Auch Amazon erfreute sich an Weihnachtsgeschäft + iPod Hysterie: "The top selling electronics products this year were the Apple 20GB iPod, the Apple 4GB Silver Mini iPod, the Phillips DVP642 DivX Progressive Scan DVD player, the iTunes $15 prepaid Card and the Canon PowerShot SD 110 3MP Digital Elph camera."

Seit gut einer Woche gibt es den iPod-Linux Installer 0.3a, xlr8yourmac und Markus haben es auf dem eigenen iPod getestet: "Mitgeliefert werden auch fünf Spiele sowie die Möglichkeit, Aufnahmen über Line-In oder Mikrofon zu machen. Den Schmäh, im Diagnosemodus des iPods etwas in den linken Ohrhörer zu schreien, um es sich später wieder anzuhören, findet man hier auch wieder."

The Sunday Times (Bezahlabo) macht Steve Jobs zur 'Business Person of 2004', Macworld UK zitiert aus dem Artikel: “It is even more remarkable for one chief executive to enjoy this level of success, not at one company, but at two quite different businesses in the same year. And to accomplish all this while undergoing treatment for cancer – well, that’s just incredible.”

Steve Jobs befindet sich zudem unter den 'Namen die man kennen sollte' des WSJ: "Mr. Jobs has not one but two hot streaks going. At Pixar, his staff churned out another box-office smash, "The Incredibles." In the iPod, Apple invented the Walkman of the '00s and dominates digital music."

Ein Problem mit der AirPort Express Firmware 6.1.1: "Peter Horvath wrote in to note that AirPort Express firmware update 6.1.1 disables screen saver mode on a machine that's streaming music.
