Anstatt die Developer Note zu den neuen iMacs als unspannend abzutun, hätte ich mal einen Blick hineinwerfen sollen: "Ambient light sensor: The computer has an ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the sleep indicator to light conditions." Neu ist zudem, dass außer den Lüftern nichts mehr selbst repariert werden kann/soll: "Though many reports from our readers were very positive, it appears that several Apple Certified Resellers received Macs partially repaired, or even definitely damaged. This must be the reason why Apple decided to stop this system with the new revision of iMac," meldet MacBidouille.

Macworld wirft einen ausführlicheren Blick auf Spotlight: "Yes, it’s got a bunch of rough edges. Yes, it hasn’t reached its full potential. But what’s already there in Mac OS X 10.4.0 is pretty impressive, and I have the feeling that it’ll only get better. If Apple can address Spotlight’s inability to query databases and design an “expert search” interface for the geekier among us, I’ll be happy. In a year I’d expect that the general consensus will be that Spotlight is the most important feature ever added to Mac OS X."

90% der Widgets, die ich bis jetzt angetestet habe, sind umgehend wieder aus Dashboard verbannt worden. Nicht so Air Traffic Control: "AirTrafficControl is a widget for finding Apple Airport base stations or other access points. it is based on the work of the fine mac developers over at macstumbler.[...] basically it'll tell you name, signal strength, and whether or not the network is encrypted."
Ebenfalls sehr aufhebenswert: TypeCast: "A font preview/info widget."

Die Computerworld hat einen Blick auf den Dual 2,7GHz Power Mac geworfen und gibt sich zufrieden: "All I can say for sure is that the combination of this machine, with the extra RAM, twin 10,000-rpm hard drives and Tiger, makes for one barnburner of a Power Mac. It may not be the 3-GHz G5 rocket Jobs promised us, but it's darn close. "

CNN und Time Magazine haben eine Liste der ihrer Meinung nach im vergangenen Vierteljahrhundert faszinierendsten Persönlichkeiten aufgelegt. Die Plätze Zwei und Drei werden von Religionsführern belegt, bei Erweiterung der Definition auch Platz Vier. Drei Persönlichkeiten sind aus dem Businessbereich, darunter Steve Jobs. Er belegt Platz 16, fünf Plätze hinter dem Gründer von Microsoft. In ihrer sehr amerikanischen Sicht auf die Welt fanden CNN und Time unter den Europäern fünf faszinierende Persönlichkeiten, unter den Deutschen seit 1980 keine. Platz Eins ist allerdings noch nicht veröffentlicht. Wie so häufig bei Rankings ist unklar, wie die Rangfolge zustande gekommen ist. (jpf)

For the quarter, Pixar reported revenues of $161.2 million and earnings of $81.9 million, or $0.67 per diluted share. These results compare to revenues of $53.8 million and earnings of $26.7 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, achieved in the year-ago quarter." iTunes mobile Screenshot? [Update]

Unter extremem Vorbehalt:

Eine tschechische Mobiltelefonseite will diese Screenshots von iTunes mobile auf einem Motorola E790 wo auch immer ausgegraben haben. Wahrscheinlich und hoffentlich Fake. (via Mobile Music Blog)
Update: Die Screenshots sind echt, zeigen (glücklicherweise noch) das Entwicklungsstadium. "The correct images of the iTunes screens are still under development and are not final nor approved by either Apple or Motorola. We would expect them to be available mid July when the product launches," bekam Gizmodo vom Motorola Kollektiv geschrieben.

Himmelfahrts-MacOrama für den 5. Mai 2005

MacNN hat die Details aus Apples März 2005 SEC Filing zusammengetragen. Darin findet sich viel (mal mehr mal weniger) bekanntes Zahlenmaterial: "Apple capitalizes $34 million for Tiger: During the second quarter and first quarter of 2005 and the fourth quarter of 2004, Apple capitalized approximately $14.7 million, $14.8 million and $4.5 million, respectively, of costs associated with the development of Tiger." Ebenso ein Überblick über Apples akute Rechtsstreitigkeiten, die Beatles-Geschichte wird z.B. erst nächstes Jahr verhandelt und im Streit um 'Tiger' hat das Gericht noch keine Entscheidung gefällt. MacMinute liefert ebenfalls einen Überblick.

Bisher hat Apple in Mac OS X immer den "Stuffit Expander" mitgeliefert, mit dem man die Allume-hauseigenen Archivformate wie .sit oder .sitx öffnen konnte. Mit Tiger ist das Programm nicht mehr dabei. Das Problem ist, dass Allume seinen kostenlosen Expander hervorragend auf der Firmen-Homepage versteckt. Hier ist der Link zum separaten Download des Expanders.
Wer bereits eine Demo-Version von Stuffit (Standard oder Deluxe) auf seiner Festplatte hat, kann das Programm "Stuffit Expander" in den Programme-Ordner verschieben und bei der anschließenden Deinstallation von Stuffit das Entfernen des "Stuffit-Frameworks" verhindern (Häkchen weg). (ms)

Merrill Lynch Analyst Milunovich sprach mit Apples Oppenheimer und brachte allerlei mit, wie TMO berichtet: "preliminary March results from research marketing firm NPD showed the shuffle's market share rose from 43% in February to 58% in March.[...] (Apple) management argued that iPod will remain the best way to manage and listen to music with MP3 capability in handsets more complementary than a replacement," Mr. Milunovich wrote. "The negatives of music on a handset include a worse user interface and limited battery life," he said he was told. Mr. Oppenheimer said he "doesn't foresee problems working with (cellular) carriers," to employ iPod features in mobile phones.[...] Mr. Milunovich did not say he was told so specifically, but wrote to clients that "Macs may be more advertised" on television in the U.S. in the near future. The Wall Street analyst said "we look for coming Mac ads to aid the halo effect."

Spodlight 1.0 bringt Spotlight zum Indizieren aller angeschlossenen iPods: "Spodlight forces Spotlight to index your iPod and make it searchable. So now when you search in Spotlight, your iPod's music is searchable and you can easily access it (play it, copy it, etc), without a third party program."

PowerBook hochkant nutzen

MacBidouille hatte heute wieder 'Pivot' im Gespräch: Gemeint ist die Möglichkeit unter 10.4, den Bildschirminhalt mal eben um ein paar Grad nach Wahl zu drehen (genaugenommen um 90, 180 und 270 Grad, jeweils gegen den Uhrzeigersinn). Es funktioniert auch völlig ohne externen Monitor mit dem Display meines PowerBooks (ATI Mobility Radeon 9700). Man muss lediglich beim Aufrufen der Display/Monitor-Systemeinstellung die Badewannentaste (ja, Option) gedrückt halten und schon bekommt man die Auswahl geboten. Aber Vorsicht: Die Maus-/Trackpadbedienung bei gedrehtem Bildschirminhalt ist nicht ganz ohne. Danke an Ben für den Hinweis!

Alles in allem eine schöne Überarbeitung, endlich sieht auch der iMac 512MB RAM standardmäßig, weiterhin erfreut das Beipacken von AirPort Extreme Karte, Bluetooth 2.0 und 128MB Radeon-Karte bei allen Modellen sowie das Dual-Layer Superdrive bei den zwei größeren Modellen. Die 20" Variante wurde außerdem 90 EUR billiger.

Der eMac wurde ebenfalls erfrischt, er kommt jetzt mit 1,42GHz G4 256/512 MB RAM, Radeon 9600 (64MB RAM), 80/160GB Platte, Combo/8xSuperdrive (DL) und natürlich Tiger. Preis 779/979 EUR, lieferbar sofort.

Die europäischen Stores sind bereist offline, der US Store ist wie immer dicht gefolgt. Zu rechnen ist mit überarbeitenden iMacs, eMacs (und eventuell iBooks).

Natinalpark Hartz, 32-Tastenmäuse, Porn-Mode und exklusive iPod mini-Farben

Auch wenn sich Teile Deutschlands momentan als 'Nationalpark Hartz' beschreiben lassen, verwirrt der entsprechende Adressbucheintrag im Spotlight Screenshot der deutschen Tiger Packung doch etwas.
