Kommt doch noch ein PowerBook G5? [Update]

Es ist nicht mehr als eine wüste Vermutung und doch: Könnten wir noch ein PowerBook G5 präsentiert bekommen, bevor der große Umstieg beginnt? Die Vorhersage setzt sich aus zwei vagen Komponenten zusammen. Da ist zum einen Freescale, die in einem CNET Artikel versprechen eine weitere Reihe G4 Prozessoren für iBook und Mac mini zu, das PowerBook wird dabei wohlgemerkt nicht erwähnt: "The company is still committed to producing another batch of faster and low-power G4 processors for iBooks and Mac minis, Doke added." Und dann ist da noch Steve Jobs auf der Keynote, der im Zusammenhang mit dem 3GHz Power Mac und einem PowerBook G5 folgendes sagt: "We haven't been able to deliver that to you yet." Was würde sich schließlich besser eignen die holprige Übergangszeit (vor allem in der Pro-Linie) der nächsten anderthalb Jahre zu überbrücken?
Update: Liegt MacBidouille richtig, wird definitiv kein PowerBook G5 mehr kommen: "Concerning the PowerBookG5, all developments have been stopped. The reason: no way to manufacture PPC970GX necessary to answer both requirements for mobility and battery lifespan. In addition, they could not setup an efficient cooling system as well as a corresponding battery.
IBM has also decided to drop the PPC750VX which was designed to replace the G4 in entry-level computers."

The PCs are in Power Mac G5 cases, making me wonder (with no purpose) whether Apple had extra cases assembled or relieved some Power Mac G5s of their guts. The two machines that I saw outside non-disclosure each had one single-core 3.6 GHz Pentium 4 CPU, or so Apple's About This Mac dialog reported. Apple's hardware spokesman was insistent that these machines are not representative of Apple's design", schreibt Tom Yager über das 'Developer Transition System'.

WWDC Keynote Nachlese [Update]

"Die Keynote gibt es zum sehenden Nachvollziehen hier bei Apple." Nach-Keynote Interview mit Jobs auf CNBC. Think Secret hat ein wenig mitgeschrieben: "The move is "not as dramatic as you're characterizing it," Jobs told host Ron Insana at about 2:25pm ET. Apple has great PowerPC products today and more in the pipeline that it hasn't yet introduced, Jobs said. "This is going to be a more gradual transition," he said." Ein kleiner aber feiner Unterschied: Windows auf Macs, aber kein OS X für die DOSe. So soll es tatsächlich möglich werden, Windows auf einem (Intel-bestückten) Mac laufen zu lassen (wenn auch 'unsupported'), aber OS X (for Intel) auf irgendeiner klassischen PC-Kiste dürfte erst nach mannigfaltigen Hack-Versuchen zu sehen sein.
Phil Schiller gegenüber CNET: "After Jobs' presentation, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that." However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said."
Michael Gartenberg schreibt: "This isn't a clone play I any way shape or form. No running OS X on your Dell. No running Windows on your Macintosh out of the box (although unlike trying run os x on your pc, apple won't prevent your mac from running windows but won't support it). I would expect over time hacks to abound to try and enable both."

CNET zitiert Steve Ballmer, der sich betont gelassen gibt: "Will there be more device drivers because of this? No, Apple has their device model-we have ours. Will there more hardware manufacturers that build Apple machines other than Apple? That's a whole business model change. No reason to believe so," he said. Ehre wem Ehre gebührt: Matthew Rothenberg sowie Nick Ciarelli aka Nick dePlume für ihren massiv verspotteten Marklar-Artikel im Sommer 2002 und Paul Thurrott, der das nun zum Fakt gewordene Apple+Intel-Gerücht dieses Jahr lostrat.
Die Analystennullnummer geht an Peter Glaskowsky, der im Dezember 2003 ein PowerBook G5 für Januar 2004 vorhersagte und sich am Sonntag folgendermaßen zu Apple+Intel-Gerüchten äußerte: "It's a bunch of bull."

Tony Smith wirft bei The Register einen sehr nüchternen Blick auf die (zum Zeitpunkt des Artikels noch nicht offiziellen) Intel-Chips im Mac: "First, understand the key fact: a Mac built out of an Intel CPU and Intel system logic will be no more a PC than a Mac is today. Two things make a Mac: the operating system and the hardware design. It is not, for the vast majority of users, what kind of processor it contains."

MacIntel vs. Xbox 360: "Microsoft's decision to build its own computer hardware, with help from I.B.M., was a direct assault on a market that Intel was counting on for future growth. It is likely that Intel forged the alliance with Apple in an effort to counter the powerful home entertainment and game systems coming from Microsoft and Sony", so die NYT. "For years, according to industry analysts, the work for Apple has been barely a break-even business for I.B.M. When the two companies were negotiating a new contract recently, Mr. Jobs pushed for price discounts that I.B.M. refused to offer. For I.B.M., "the economics just didn't work," said one industry executive who was briefed on the negotiations. "And Apple is not so important a customer that you would take the financial hit to hold onto the relationship."

Kein fscklog-Liveticker zur Keynote

Ich werde leider nicht in der Lage sein, heute Abend ab 19 Uhr den üblichen Live-Ticker zur WWDC Keynote zu liefern. Nichtsdestotrotz ist natürlich der iChat Raum 'fscklog' für jegliche Diskussion verfügbar (einfach in iChat Apfel+Shift+G drücken und fscklog eingeben, sollte es dort wie die letzten Male überquellen, geht es eben mit fscklog1, fscklog2, etc. weiter) und vermutlich/hoffentlich tickert dort sowieso jemand mit. Ab 20 Uhr dürfte ich mich dort dann ebenfalls tummeln und im Laufe des Abends voraussichtlich Nach-Berichterstattung leisten.

Keynote-MacOrama für den 6. Juni 2005 [Update]

Apple hat die eigene Startseite pünktlich zum WWDC Beginn auf Dashboard-Bewerbung umgestellt. Die Dashboard Downloadseite wurde ebenfalls angepasst und enthält nun einen 'Widget Browser'.

Update: .mac wird für den Zeitraum der heutigen Keynote offline gehen, angeblich aufgrund von "scheduled maintenance". Ob wirklich mehr dahintersteckt sei dahingestellt, aber der Zeitpunkt ist schon auffällig gewählt. (P.S.: Wo bleiben die exklusiven Widgets?)

WWDC Keynote mit Intel-Chef Otellini? [Update]

Die Reihe der illustren Publikationen, die über eine Apple und Intel Zusammenarbeit berichten, erweitert sich: Seit gestern will auch die NYT von dem Switch wissen (ebenfalls unter Berufung auf "industry executives") und merkt an, dass Apple bei IBM nicht gerade zu den Großabnehmern gehört: "By contrast, the chips I.B.M. makes for Apple represent less than 2 percent of chip production at its largest factory in East Fishkill, N.Y. And while the microelectronics business as a whole is strategically important for I.B.M., it is a small part of the revenue of a company that increasingly focuses on services and software." Das WSJ (kostenpflichtig) bestätigt die eigene Vorhersage von Ende Mai und vergangenem Samstag: "Apple, of Cupertino, Calif., has begun briefing some partners about plans to begin shifting its Macintosh computer line next year to Intel chips, according to industry executives and people familiar with the briefings." Höchstwahrscheinlich wird Intel-Chef Otellini in wenigen Stunden neben Steve Jobs auf der WWDC Bühne erscheinen, so das WSJ weiter. "TMO has confirmed through its own sources that Mr. Otellini arrived in the San Francisco area Saturday." (Danke, Mario!)
Update: Leander Kahney sieht die Ursache für den vermeintlichen Umstieg in einem iTunes Movie Store: "And that's why the whole Mac platform has to shift to Intel. Consumers will want to move content from one device to another -- or one computer to another -- and Intel's DRM scheme will keep it all nicely locked down" und Sun Chef Jonathan Schwartz spricht bereits Einladungen an Jobs/Apple aus: "So I'd like to personally invite you to adopt Solaris 10 as the underpinning of the next generation Mac. We both respect Unix, both respect innovation*, and both clearly see volume opportunities in extending choice to developers. We'd love to work together." Das Wall Street Journal selbst hält sich noch einen kleinen Ausstieg parat: "On the other hand, some Apple watchers said that, given Mr. Jobs's mercurial reputation, they won't be sure a change will happen until a formal announcement."

Gesammelte Reaktionen zu Intel inside Apple

Das WSJ (zitiert bei Paul Thurrott) erneuert seine eigenen Vorhersagen/Quellen und bestätigt CNETs freitägliche Aussagen:

"Apple Computer Inc. is expected to announce Monday that it will begin shifting its Macintosh computer line next year to Intel Corp. chips, people familiar with the situation said."

CNET legt ebenfalls nach und streut noch etwas 'portable video' hinzu:

"Cooperation between the two companies could also finally make the portable video player a success. Apple has been working with Taiwanese contract manufacturers for the last year on a portable video player. Intel has designed several of these units, which later got sold by outfits like Sonicblue. Right now, however, sources have not said Apple and Intel are working on these products. Instead, they have said Apple will adopt Intel chips in its PCs."

Om Malik erwartet zuerst Apple Notebooks mit Intel Chips und gibt eine interessante Einschätzung zur Situation:

"It is a Machiavellian move, directed to rattle the Rajahs of Redmond. It is a subtle message - all things equal, Apple OS is much better than Microsoft’s Windows and the market place will prove it. You might think it is bit of conjecture, but look at the reality of the situation. Now Apple can get Intel’s marketing subsidies.[...] That leaves the platform - Windows XP versus OS-X! Insecure versus Secure! Work versus Fun! Bill versus Steve!"

MacRumors liefert einen Rückblick auf die jahrelangen 'Macs mit Intel-Chips'-Gerüchte:

"The most striking aspect is the origination of rumors from more traditional news sources (CNet and the Wall Street Journal). In the hierarchy of rumor sources, these news sites are traditionally more accurate as they tend to be more selective about their stories than dedicated rumor sites. As a result, the likelihood that these rumors are true is high."

The Inquirer wirft zusätzlich zu Intel noch AMD in den Raum:

"The rumoured Apple move to x86 is true, the INQIORER [sic!] has gotten independent confirmation of this. Prior to publication of this, sources had told the INQ that a switch was in the works. More importantly, they also said that Apple was playing the AMD card at full force, so don't be too surprised if a green logo shows up on some models."

Scoble:

"Make no mistake. This is a real story and I've gotten confirmation from people who know. I can't say more, though, cause I don't want Apple to sue me to find out my sources."

Glenn Fleishman:

"I'm still dubious. My gut tells me that this is Steve Jobs's greatest revenge on the folks running rumor sites and that this information was seeded to unreliable insiders who then blabbed. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some firings based on this and that Jobs gets up at WWDC and announces a stronger partnership with IBM."

Bei den Fotos war iPod Linux dem iPod photo schon voraus, möglicherweise ist man es ebenfalls wieder mit dem Video Player. Zutiefst beeindruckend ist das alles zwar noch nicht, aber es geht halt (Phillip Torrone hält ein Filmchen zu den Ergebnissen parat).
