Apple und Intel forschen künftig nebeneinander an der Carnegie Mellon University in Oakland (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). "The Apple facility will share the top floor of the four-story building with Intel's existing Intel Research Pittsburgh unit, a research laboratory that employs 17 people.[...] Plans are for researchers from Apple and Intel in the new building to discuss the possibility of cooperating or working on joint projects, said Todd C. Der iPod Chiplieferant PortalPlayer legte gut Zahlen vor: "The company's sales were basically flat from the prior quarter, in line with what the company predicted in April. However, PortalPlayer said it saw more of its sales go to its largest customer, widely known to be Apple Computer, while sales to other makers were weaker, perhaps a sign that other companies were more affected by a seasonal slowdown." Dashboard Steuerung per Tastatur: Apfel+´ zum Einblenden der Widget-Leiste dürfte inzwischen geläufig sein, seit 10.4.2 lässt sich jetzt endlich mit Apfel+Pfeil (links/rechts) auch durch eine überfüllte 'Dashboard Bar' navigieren, zur Auswahl eines Widgets bedarf es wohl weiterhin der Maus. Schnellere iBooks, neue Grafik, mehr RAM, kein Widescreen

Die neuen iBooks verfügen nun ebenfalls über ein Blätter-Trackpad (hoffentlich problembefreit) und 'Sudden Motion Sensor' zum Schutz der Festplatte im Sturzfalle.

Mac mini bekommt mehr Arbeitsspeicher

Der Mac mini wurde leicht überarbeitet: Am Prozessor tat sich nichts, dafür stecken nun in jedem Modell 512MB RAM und in der 1,42GHz-Variante kommt wie vermutet Airport Extreme und Bluetooth gleich mit. Zusätzlich gibt es das 'große' Modell mit SuperDrive. In der Übersicht sieht die Mac mini Reihe nun folgendermaßen aus, versandfertig in acht Tagen:

Apple Store ist offline [Update]

Die europäischen Apple Stores sind bereits offline, der US Store dürfte in Kürze folgen. Bereiten wir uns auf iBooks und Mac minis vor.
Update: Das Ritual schreitet (wenn auch erheblich verspätet) voran, der US-Store ist nun ebenfalls 'back soon'.

iPod als Halluzinogen

Der Evening Standard ist weiterhin auf der Suche nach nicht auf dem Beipackzettel aufgeführten Nebenwirkungen des iPod. Heute: "Listening to an iPod could leave you with psychological problems, an expert warns.[...] Some sufferers find the condition a comfort. One 28-year-old said it was like a film soundtrack. Twenty patients reported hearing religious music, with six hearing the hymn Abide With Me." Zeit für eine aufgefrischte iPod Gesundheitswarnung.

Motonow: Kein iTunes phone heute [Update]

Moto-Chef Zander verlas eben auf dem Motonow-Event einen 'Brief' von Steve Jobs ("Steve is not going to jump out of a cake"): Heute wird das iTunes phone nicht zu sehen sein, aber in den verbleibenden 66 Tagen des Quartals soll es vorgestellt und ausgeliefert werden ("But on one of the 66 days left in the quarter -- we're not saying which one yet -- Apple, Motorola and our biggest operator partners around the world will announce and ship the first iTunes phone"). Dafür ergeht man sich momentan in Peinlichkeiten über RAZRwire, später soll noch die ROKR Familie gezeigt werden, die bislang als heißer iTunes mobile Kandidat galt:

"The ROKR family will include phones that offer dedicated music keys, optimized music player interface, superior audio capability, extensive memory (internal or removable), and a long battery life." Immerhin wurde Motorolas weithin gerüchteter Blackberry/Treo-Konkurrent 'Q' offiziell:

Kommt Q1 2006 und ist verunstaltet mit Windows Mobile 5.0, leider. MobileBurn hat ein paar leibhaftige Aufnahmen des Q, inklusive Größenvergleich zu Blackberry und RAZR. "Ron Garriques, president of Motorola Mobile Devices, said that, conservatively, the Q should be available in Q1 of 2006, but that he hoped to have the device on the market during Q4 of this year. No information on pricing or market availability was released."

Nachher um 2 startet Motonow, Motorolas Medienevent (Webcast), das die Vorstellung des iTunes phones endlich mit sich bringen könnte. "So will Zander be lifting the curtain on the iTunes by Tuesday when he hosts this year's analyst gathering in Rosemont? Well, he hinted at it, but wouldn't quite say. "We'll have a lot of music stuff for you [this] week," sagte der Moto-Chef gegenüber Chicago Tribune.

Microsofts frisch gestartete 'virtuelle Erde' beeindruckt durch die Aktualität ihrer Bilder: Apple HQ One Infinte Loop ist noch gar nicht erbaut, womit die Aufnahmen knapp 15 Jahre alt sein dürften. Google machts besser.

Kürzlich veröffentlichte Zahlen zum Einsatz von OS X in Firmen wurden falsch wiedergegeben, MacCentral hat den Artikel inzwischen (lausig) korrigiert. Ian Betteridge schreibt: "I checked with Joe Wilcox, the analyst who was quoted in the story, and it turned out it was a misquote: 21% of larger companies have some Macs, which, given the Mac’s popularity in design and publishing, is no surprise."

Yahoo kaufte für eine ungenannte Summe Konfabulator und stellt es kostenlos zur Verfügung. "The acquisition of Konfabulator may not be the last Mac compatible product users see from Yahoo! IBMs Roadmap: PowerPC 970GX und 970MX [Update: alt]

Eine IBM-Präsentation (.ppt 324KB) spuckt allerlei Interessantes aus, unter anderem: "In terms of power specs, IBM claims that the G5 970FX is superior to Freescale's current G4 7447A at most clock speeds, measured by performance per Watt. What is interesting though is that even IBM concedes that Intel's Pentium M Dothan is superior with this measure at moderate speeds and possibly also at higher speeds", schreibt Everything Apple. IBM hatte vor kurzem erst 970MP und eine sparsame 970FX Variante offiziell angekündigt.

Apple Store war kurzzeitig offline

Der Apple Store war vorübergehend (weltweit) offline, mehr als Wartungsarbeiten dürften es an diesem gemächlichen Sonntag wohl kaum gewesen sein. Dennoch: die kommenden Tage versprechen spannend zu werden, iTunes phone und Consumer Macs lauern (die Versandzeit für iBook und Mac mini liegt jetzt im US Store bei passgenauen 3-5 Tagen) und damit geht bekanntlich ständiges Schielen nach einem eventuell vom Netz gehenden Apple Online Store einher.
