Apple hat mit Freescale eine Vereinbarung getroffen durch die bis Ende 2008 für Nachschub bei G4 Prozessoren gesorgt ist. Dies geht aus einem SEC-Filing hervor. "Apple is under no obligation to purchase Freescale microprocessors other than work in progress that was in place at the time the agreement was executed." Apples Vertrag mit IBM über Prozessorlieferungen ist derzeit auf Oktober 2007 befristet. Bis Ende 2007 soll der Wechsel aller Macs zu Intel-Prozessoren eigentlich komplett abgeschlossen sein, TheStreet.com vermutet deshalb: "In other words, the deal could just be a contingency plan in case of a delay, or it could simply allow Apple to buy chips to repair or replace those used in older models."

Die Einigung im Fall der iPod Akku Sammelklage wurde nun endgültig von einem Richter abgesegnet: "A San Mateo County judge on Thursday approved the settlement of a class-action lawsuit that will allow as many as 1.3 million owners of iPod music players to replace defective batteries on maker Apple's tab", so Inside Bay Area. Die alberne Annahme, dies könnte Apple um die 100 Millionen Dollar kosten wird damit noch milchmädchenhafter. Tatsächlich dürfte es sich um rund 15 Millionen Dollar handeln.

Ein NYT-Artikel berichtet erneut über erhöhten Druck mancher Majors auf Steve Jobs, das einheitliche 0,99$ Preismodell des iTMS aufzugeben und flexible (= höhere) Preise einzuführen: "If he loses, the one-price model that iTunes has adopted - 99 cents to download any song - could be replaced with a more complex structure that prices songs by popularity. A hot new single, for example, could sell for $1.49, while a golden oldie could go for substantially less than 99 cents. Music executives who support Mr. Jobs say the higher prices could backfire, sending iTunes' customers in search of songs on free, unauthorized file-swapping networks."

Apple wirbt ausgerechnet auf Yahoo für die hauseigenen Dashboard Widgets mit dem Claim 'Widgets. Only on a Mac.'. tuaw bietet ein .mov der Flash-Werbung. Yahoo hatte unlängst Konfabulator aufgekauft und bietet seitdem selbst (Konfabulator-)Widgets zum Download. Seltsamerweise bewirbt Apple sein Stocks-Widget so, als ob man es auf dem Desktop betreiben könnte (was ja auch grundsätzlich möglich ist, aber nur über Umwege).

Es zeichnete sich Ende Juli bereits ab, als SigmaTel kräftig bei Rio einkaufte, nun wurde das offizielle Rio-MP3 Player-Ende verkündet: "Tokyo, Japan-based D&M Holdings Inc., makers of the Rio line of digital music players, announced Friday plans to exit the mass-market portable digital audio player business by the end of September. The Rio was the first handheld MP3 player to hit the market", schreibt Playlist.

Es hört sich mehr nach urbaner Legende an, was Adam Engst über iPod bewohnende, weltbereisende (und natürlich killende) Ameisen zu berichten hat: "The bad guys in this case were Singapore ants - Monomorium destructor. They infiltrated a packaged iPod sold in an airport duty-free shop, and an individual returning from Fiji to New Zealand purchased the iPod on his way home. Upon arrival, however, he discovered the ants, and, acting on instructions from the authorities, put the iPod and packaging in his freezer to kill the insects (I presume the iPod emerged unscathed, though its fate wasn't mentioned)."

Forbes: "A media report revealed Friday that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Committee launched an informal inquiry intoSteve Jobs' Pixar after heavier-than-expected returns of The Incredibles DVD led the studio to fall short of its second-quarter earnings forecast. Pixar, whose shares fell nearly 2% Friday, said it is cooperating with the SEC."

Apple nicht auf der IFA

Bereits im mittigen Juli-Sommerloch trat Hal Faber die Spekulationen um einen gemeinsamen IFA-Auftritt von Intel+Apple los: "Sie basiert auf der bereits bekannten Tatsache, dass Intel im Verein mit Apple die größte Ausstellungsfläche der IFA 2005 angemietet hat. Was dort zu sehen sein wird, dürfte nichts weniger als der iTunes Movie Store und das Digital Home sein, das Intel wie Apple so gerne erwähnen." Die aktuelle c't frischt das Gerücht offenbar nochmals auf, obwohl Apple in der Ausstellerliste keineswegs vertreten ist und Apple Deutschland auch gegenüber fscklog.com klarstellte, dass man selbst nicht auf der IFA vertreten sei.

"American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu believes Apple will sell 7.1 million iPods in the current quarter. The figure is up 15 per cent, quarter-on-quarter, but he warns that average selling prices in iPods may come under, "greater than expected pressure", he wrote in a note to clients obtained by Macworld UK."

Apple mit Foto-Offensive?

Während man sich bislang das Sommerloch mit iPod Video, Tablet Mac und anderen wireless handheld-Kreaturen um die Ohren schlägt, scheint Apple auch in eine(r) ganz anderen Richtung fortzuschreiten. So wird momentan die Marke Apple auf den Foto-Bereich ausgedehnt und soll bald folgendes (geschützt) umfassen: "Treatment of materials, namely, developing of photographic film; electronic recording of photographic images; enlarging of photographic prints; photographic film developing; photographic film printing; photographic image processing; photographic printing; photographic reproduction; transfer of photographs on to compact disc or video tape; on-line processing, developing and delivery of digital images; on-line printing of digital images onto photographic paper, photographic books or merchandise; advisory and consultancy services relating to all the aforesaid." Möglicherweise will Apple hier den iPhoto Buch- und Bilderservice, der momentan von Kodak geleistet wird (und zumindest mich nicht sonderlich überzeugen konnte), selbst übernehmen. Dies würde immerhin dem alten haarsträubenden 'iPhoto für Windows'-Gerücht neuen Nährboden bereiten. Zugleich tauchte laut Think Secret in einer von Adobe durchgeführten Online-Umfrage eine angebliche Apple-App namens 'Photo Pro' auf: "It's not clear whether the Apple Photo Pro identified in the survey is conjectural or based on Adobe's market intelligence."

Apples Stellenanzeigen laden zur Spekulation: DRM für Video, funkende Handhelds und Web Apps

Tief in Apples Stellenangeboten hat AppleInsider gewühlt und dabei genug zu Tage gefördert, um sich diverse zukünftige Entwicklungen und Produkte zusammenzureimen. So soll künftig die iCal-, Mail- und Adressbuch-Integration in anderen Programmen vorangetrieben werden, ein Entwickler mit 3D/Grafik-Hintergrund wird für "the next generation of Mac applications" gesucht und ein Hardware Ingenieur mit vielfältigen Erfahrungen ("system integration, digital logic, SDRAM, Flash, ASIC, processor selection, ATAPI, various communication protocols, display types and analog integration") wird für 'iPod Accessoires' benötigt. Besonders bemerkenswert sind außerdem offene Plätze für einen Entwickler von Web Applikationen (man lese zur Fantasieanregung kottkes WebOS-Artikel), einen DRM-Kundigen, der sich mit Audio und Video-Technologien bestens auskennen sollte und vor allem für einen Produktdesigner, der möglichst über "Handheld/portable/wireless device" Erfahrungen im Verbraucherelektronikmarkt verfügen sollte. Letzteres schreit dabei geradezu danach, mit der Handschriftenerkennung in einen Topf geworfen zu werden.

Wird das iTunes phone endlich am 07. September vorgestellt?

Eine neuer Tag, ein neuer iTunes mobile-Termin und die Wahrscheinlichkeit für einen Treffer steigt langsam. AppleInsider will erfahren haben, dass Motorola ein Media Event in Manhattan für den 07. September plant, auf dem unter anderem das erste 'iTunes phone' vorgestellt werden soll. Motorola-Chef Zander soll vor Ort sein, ob Jobs sich dafür nach New York begibt, ist bislang unklar. "According to sources, Motorola plans to hold a similar event to launch a versions of its iTunes phones in Europe, but details of that event are unknown." Kürzlich wurde erst die FCC-Freigabe des E790 bekannt, das laut seiner Anleitung eine mobile iTunes-Applikation erhalten soll.

Im selben Artikel außerdem diese nette Anekdote ausgepackt: "Court documents obtained from the recent lawsuit against former Doors members Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, who had wanted to call their new band The Doors 21st Century, reveal that at one point Apple had offered $4 million for an unnamed Doors song for use in a commercial, while Cadillac had offered $15 million to use the song Break On Through."

Intel stellte seine Roadmap vor, Hannibals Kommentar: "Will Apple use these processors? Absolutely. My previous speculative roadmap for Apple's transition showed Merom and Conroe going into the PowerBook and PowerMac lines, respectively, in late 2006/early 2007. I still stand by that roadmap, and indeed today's announcements are further confirmation of it."

Bei CNET gibt es unter anderem diesen Yonah-nutzenden Prototypen zu sehen, der abgesehen von der oberen Hässlichkeit mit seinem Unterbau durchaus an ein kleines PowerBook erinnert. "It has not been announced who will make these PCs."

John Markoff beobachtete für die NYT: "Among those attending Mr. Otellini's speech were a group of executives from Apple Computer, which in June announced that it would switch to Intel from I.B.M. for microprocessors in its machines. After the speech, the Apple executives, like visitors to a foreign country, were given a guided tour of the Intel forum."

"Auf dem Intel-Entwicklerforum gab der designierte Apple-Zulieferer auch einen Ausblick auf seine versprochenen Mac-OS-X-Compiler und -Libraries. Momentan ist Großbritannien die rühmliche Ausnahme was europäische Apple Retail Stores angeht. Die Gerüchteküche munkelt schon lange über eine Expansion aufs Festland (die Pariser Apple Expo wäre dafür doch der ideale Bekanntgabetermin) und eine Apple Stellenausschreibung sollte diese kräftig unterfüttern: "Apple has also posted the position of Development Manager, European Union, which is based in offices above the Regent Street (London) retail store.
