Große iPod-Neuigkeiten im November?

Steht uns schon im November die nächste Runde an großen iPod-Neuigkeiten bevor? Wenn es nach Gear Live geht, ganz bestimmt sogar: "We have confirmed with several inside industry sources that Apple plans on making another major iPod announcement in November." Blabla-Bluetooth für den iPod

Der Funktechnologie-Hersteller Cambridge Silicon Radio steckte dem Independent, dass man gegenüber Apple die Idee kommuniziert habe, doch die firmeneigenen Bluetooth-Chips in den iPod zu integrieren. Vermutlich versuchte CSR mit der iPod-Nennung lediglich den Aktienkurs etwas zu pushen, denn spätestens nach dieser 'Enthüllung' dürfte Apple kein allzu tief gehendes Interesse an dem plappermäuligen Unternehmen empfinden. Davon abgesehen geistert der Gedanke eines Bluetooth-funkenden iPods schon lange umher, unterfüttert von Apple Patenten und Stellenanzeigen. (via MacRumors)

Fehler10 meldet sich aus einer etwas längeren Sommerpause zurück und wird in nächster Zeit hoffentlich (wieder) regelmäßiger mit neuen abstrusen Fehlern aufwarten. Ein großer Dank geht an alle immer noch fleissigen Screenshot-Einsender. "Malfunction. Need input."

Think Secret rechnet mit einem Power Mac-Update kommende Woche, das vermutlich auf den 970MP setzt (nichts wirklich Neues eigentlich). PowerBooks soll es nach deren Quellen allerdings erst im Januar 2006 zur Macworld San Francisco geben.

RAILhead Design frischt Gerüchte um ein Tabellenkalkulationsprogramm für iWork auf: "Apple does have a spread sheet application in the works and it is planned as part of iWork 06. One thing to note, though: it’s not being developed as an Excel-killer any more than Pages was developed as a Word-killer."

PowerBook mit integrierter Kamera? [Update]

Ein im März 2004 von Apple eingereichter (und gestern veröffentlichter) Patentantrag beschreibt einen tragbaren Computer, der (z.B.) eine Kamera in seinem Verschluss trägt: "The portable computer further includes a latch including a data capture device such as a camera that is configured to secure the lid to the base." Sonderlich frisch ist das Konzept letztlich nicht, in einigen Vaios ist schon seit etlichen Jahren eine Kamera an entsprechender Stelle zu finden.
Update: AI Quellen glauben eher an eine Verwendung im kommenden iMac: "The sources describe the iMac G5 prototype as being marginally thinner than the current model and including a scaled down version of Apple's iSight video camera that is built into the computer's display bezel. The iMac design, which could see the light of day in coming months, is also said to sport a memory card reader and Bluetooth remote control capabilities."

Die in iTunes 5 neu hinzugewonnene Möglichkeit "Lyrik" (wie es so nett in der deutschen Lokalisierung heißt) zu einem Musiktitel hinzuzufügen, hat momentan noch wenig sinnvolle Nutzungsmöglichkeiten. Immerhin übernimmt der iPod nano die Textzeilen, man muss nur mehrmals den Mittelknopf drücken: "The number of times depends on if you have artwork or not. Here's the order of things when you press the Center button: Play status > Scrubber > Album Art > Lyrics/Description > Rating". Knowledge Base. Nur Aktualisierungen in Songtexten mag der nano derzeit noch nicht, er behält die Urfassung bei, wie ein Leser bei Macintouch schreibt. Ergänzend zur vollständigen Betextung bietet sich das pearLyrics-Widget an: "It looks up song lyrics on the web as you play songs in iTunes. Sure enough, you can also search for lyrics without playing the song, just enter artist and song title manually. pearLyrics then consults up to seven different servers to do its best and find the lyrics you are looking for. Neues von Apple vs. Powerpage/AI: "Court documents (3,5MB PDF) in the Apple v. Does case were unsealed last week, and they reveal that the software giant sought to subpoena two reporters' anonymous sources without first conducting a thorough investigation inside the company. This is a crucial issue in the case, which will be heard by the California Court of Appeal, because the First Amendment and the California Constitution require that Apple exhaust all other alternatives before trying to subpoena journalists", so die EFF in einer Pressemitteilung.

Etliche Windows-Nutzer hatten offenbar Probleme mit ihrem Update auf iTunes 5. "Apple acknowledged the problem and said it's working on an update," weiß CNET. Ob es ebenfalls ein Update für die Mac-Version gibt, geht daraus bislang nicht klar hervor.

In der Softwareaktualisierung, 45,3 MB schwer: "Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2 delivers improved reliability and compatibility for Java on Mac OS X v10.4. This release includes Java 2 Platform Standard Edition versions 1.3.1_16 and 1.4.2_09." Kein Neustart erforderlich.

iPod nano Verkäufe bislang "good, but not great"? [Update]

American Technology Research-Analyst Shaw Wu diagnostiziert dem iPod nano einen eher ruhigen Verkaufsstart: "checks with industry and channel sources indicate that many Apple stores sold between 200 and 500 of their initial nano allocation of between 1,800 and 2,500." Der Vergleich mit einem sechs Monate lang ausverkauften iPod mini hinkt allerdings, da Apple offenbar (und ganz im Gegensatz zum mini) reichlich nanos vorproduziert hat. Was Amazons Top-Liste schon andeutete, wird auch von Shaw Wu bestätigt, der schwarze iPod nano wird mehr nachgefragt als sein unschuldiger Zwillingsbruder ("by 5 to 1 on average, and as high as 8 to 1 in some locations") und ist angeblich an mehreren Orten bereits vergriffen. Das Weiseste schreibt der Analyst deshalb zum Schluss: "iPod nano has only started shipping since Sept. 7, and thus it may be difficult to draw a trend with only six days of data." Update: Yay, Analystenschlammcatchen: "Piper Jaffray said the iPod nano from Apple Computer is "selling well." Available for six days, the music player is seeing high demand, based on a survey of 20 Apple retail stores, Piper Jaffray said. "No store that we checked with had black 4-gigabyte nanos in stock."[...] If the lead time of the iPod nano increases, "Apple would likely be selling more iPod nanos than their initial aggressive expectations," Piper Jaffray said."
