Moto-Chef: "Screw the nano." [Update]

Motorola-Chef Ed Zander zeigt sich in einem IDG-Interview dem iPod nano schwer verfallen: "Screw the nano. What the hell does the nano do? Who listens to 1,000 songs?" Zander said. People are going to want devices that do more than just play music, something that can be seen in many other countries with more advanced mobile phone networks and savvy users, he said." Die Neuvorstellung des nano im direkten Anschluss an das SCHMOKR scheint bei Zander zu einer tiefgreifenden Aversion geführt zu haben. Nach dieser Aussage darf man sich durchaus fragen, ob nicht doch Motorola die klägliche Zwangslimitierung des ROKR auf 100 Titel mitzuverantworten hat. (via Infinite Loop)
Update: Laut einer Motorola-Stellungnahme wurde das Zitat aus dem Kontext gerissen, wie BetaNews meldet: "Company officials say Zander was smiling and joking when he responded to the question, and he did praise Apple and its iPod.[...] "During the Q&A session one questioner repeatedly and insistently asked what Zander thought of the Nano. Jokingly, Zander said he wasn't there to talk about the Nano - but to talk about the next big thing happening in the industry - the fusion of the phone and music. ROKR with iTunes was a good beginning, he said, and there's more to come."

Cingular, die vereint mit Apple und Motorola das ROKR in den USA auf den Markt schmissen, wollen kommendes Jahr eine mobile Musikdownloadmöglichkeit (mit "leicht höheren" Preise als im iTMS) an den Start bringen. "Details regarding how the service would be run were still being worked out, de la Vega said, adding that he hoped it could be done in partnership with Apple. Asked about demand for the ROKR, de la Vega said the company was making sales, but noted that "it takes a little while to build." Sprich: Es kauft niemand.

In der Softwareaktualisierung (oder auf apple.com) findet sich das Security Update 2005-008: "This update includes the following components: ImageIO, LibSystem, Mail, QuickDraw, Ruby, SecurityAgent and securityd." 4,5 MB groß, Neustart erforlich, Details liefert die Knowledge Base.
Hinzu kommt der iPod Updater 2005-09-23 (apple.com), der mit iPod Software 1.1.2 Bugfixes für den iPod shuffle bereithält und 32,8 MB schwer ist.

MacRumors munkelte es aus unbestätigten Quellen schon am Montag, Think Secret legte gestern Abend nach: Der Mac mini soll leise ein wenig befördert werden und dann mit 1,33/1,5 GHz daherkommen, eine 5400er Festplatte und Bluetooth 2.0 sowie ein 8-faches Dual-layer-Superdrive (im Spitzenmodell) mitbringen. Preise bleiben angeblich unverändert, das Update könnte nächste Woche stattfinden.

Die Verwendung von Flash-Speicher im iPod nano zog allerlei wirre Spekulationen über höhere Herstellungskosten (und damit eine geringere Marge) nach sich. Glaubt man iSuppli, die einen nano zerlegt haben, dürfte sich Apple darüber wenig Sorgen machen: "It costs Apple $90.18 in materials to build the unit and $8 to assemble it, leaving a profit margin before marketing and distribution costs of about 50%. MTV News berichtet über die Reaktion auf Jobs "Gier"-Vorwurf an die Label. "Speaking on condition of anonymity, one label executive said Jobs' desire to keep pricing at 99 cents had a very simple explanation: "It helps him sell iPods. When he started iTunes, he broke through that psychological barrier that consumers had and made a lot of dough doing it, but it seems like he has a monopoly and he's become the Wal-Mart of the Internet, and he wants to retain that monopoly."[...] "Music is art; it's not a commodity," the source said. ars technica hat sich die die handelsüblichen Mac-Feedreader angesehen und -getestet. Darunter finden sich PulpFiction, NewsMacPro, NewsFire, Shrook, NewsFan, NetNewsWire, Safari RSS und OmniWeb. "For the eight apps chosen for this review, we put them through the wringer and pitted them against the toughest XML, the dirtiest Atom, and the harshest RSS." Meist gemocht ist letztlich (natürlich) NNW, der sich auch unter fscklog-Lesern wilder Beliebtheit erfreut.

American Technology Research-Analyst Shaw Wu glaubt an gute Mac-Verkaufszahlen im laufenden Quartal: "At the heart of today's increases is the firm's belief that Apple is "benefiting from a strong back-to-school period where students need a personal computer today, and Macs remain the preferred PC platform for managing documents, music, photos, and videos." Er rechnet mit 1,37 Millionen Macs, im vergangenen Quartal hatte Apple 1,18 Millionen Mac losgeschlagen. Nach der Verkündung des Intel-Umstiegs war bislang mit einem Einbruch der Zahlen gerechnet worden, Klarheit werden allerdings erst die oktoberlichen Quartalszahlen bringen.

(Windows) iTunes-Nutzer haben kein leichtes Spiel mit zahlreichen kopiergeschützten CDs aus dem Hause Sony BMG. Dies führte soweit, dass Sony selbst Anleitungen zur Umgehung an Kunden lieferte. Sollte einem Satz aus dem Sony Music-Forum auch nur etwas Wahrheit innewohnen, könnte Bewegung in die Angelegenheit kommen: "We are told that itunes is coming out with a new version for PC users in early November that will be compatible with all of these new CD's but in the meantime it's frustrating for all of us", so der Sänger der Band Switchfoot. Praktisch lassen sich daraus nur zwei Schlüsse ziehen: Entweder wird iTunes geschützte WMA-Dateien unterstützen, oder Apple hat Fairplay an Sony lizenziert. (via 2lmc spool)

iTunes 5.0.1 lässt sich über die Softwareaktualisierung beziehen, 12,6MB, kein Neustart erforderlich: "iTunes 5.0.1 features several stability improvements over iTunes 5."

Es kratzt am (schwarzen) nano

Besitzer der großen iPods dürften die Problematik ebenso kennen wie iBook-Nutzer: Die weisse Oberfläche (bzw. deren darübergelegte Beschichtung) zieht Kratzer nahezu magisch an. Beim iBook ist dies ein kleines Übel, schließlich trägt man es nicht allzu häufig in der Hosentasche umher. Auf dem hüllenlosen iPod bilden sich allerdings entsprechend schnell deutlichen Spuren. Das ist beim nano nicht anders, nur macht das schwarze Modell jeglichen Kratzer besonders gnadenlos sichtbar. Gleich mehrere Leser schrieben mir über ihre ernüchternden Erfahrungen (inklusive drastischen Fotos) und auch in Apples Diskussionsforum wird das Thema mächtig durchgekaut. Sorgsame Naturen sollten deshalb ihren schwarzen iPod nano erst gar nicht ohne Schutzhülle in die Hosentasche oder sonstwohin stecken bzw. bei arger Kratzer-Allergie gleich zum weissen Modell greifen (das zumal auch kein so großer Freund des Staubes ist).

Steve spricht [Update_3]

MacBidouille veröffentlicht derweil Spionagefotos von Jobs.
Update: Außerdem sprach sich Jobs gegen Preiserhöhungen im iTMS aus. Tatsächlich waren Labels mit dem Ziel an ihn herangetreten, Preise über 0,99$ zu drücken. Jobs sagte, dass die Labels mehr Gewinn beim Verkauf über den iTunes Music Store machen als bei einer herkömmlichen CD. "So if they want to raise the prices it just means they're getting a little greedy", zitiert AP.
Update_2: Macworld UK hat fleissig mitnotiert, so gibt es Jobs-Zitate zum Mac und den kursierenden OSX86-Versionen (“We don’t know how having OS X available for PCs would affect Macs”, and promised, “we will have technology in OS X for Intel so that it cannot be installed in other PCs”), zum ROKR (“We wrote the iTunes software for that phone”, he said. “We see it as something we can learn from. It was a way to put our toe in the water, and learn something”), zum iPod video (“You can already download movies on the iTunes Music Store, and some albums offer video as an incentive to buy the music. We also offer video podcasts, but will people buy a video device just to watch this video? So far they haven’t. No one has been successful with that yet”), zum Geheimnis des iPod-Erfolges (“The iPod looks like a piece of hardware, but it’s not. It’s software. And iTunes is the best jukebox and iTunes Music Store is the best digital music distribution service”) und zu Bluetooth für den iPod (“With Bluetooth, songe take a while to download. And if you have Bluetooth headphones you have to charge them as well as the iPod. People don’ want to do that. Also the sound isn’t good enough”).
Update_3: Bernd Graf erzählt in seinem SZ-Blog von der Pressekonferenz: "Der erstaunlichste Satz dieses erstaunlichen Mannes war wohl dieser: "Ich sehe so viele Dinge, aber sie gefallen mir nicht. Kein gutes Design, you know. Darum habe ich aufgehoert, Dinge zu kaufen. I stopped buying." Kann man sich das vorstellen? Ein Milliardaer, der nicht mehr kaufen moechte, weil es nichts mehr gibt, was ihm gefaellt?"

Apple Store ist offline [Update: nix passiert]

Die europäischen Apple Stores sind bereits offline, der US Store dürfte in gewohnter Kürze folgen. Auch ganz ohne Keynote könnte es heute doch noch etwas spannender werden.
